Honking around with a Buescher Stencil
Christa Hammons first on-stage performance Winter 2017

Tony invited Christa to play a song with "The Trisha Freeman band", Just one song, but it was her first time in front of a crowd. The dance floor got crowded and the video got blocked, but hey, what if they didn't play very well and no-one got up and danced?? lol

Needs more SHRED!
Yeah, I was hoping for more face melting leads as well. When you are in a band, you have to play what the "collective" want to play
Search here for (Daddy's Little Girl) by RockCandy, it's off a rare demo recording featuring Buffalo Music Hall of Fame singer song writer Joie Anes!
Just sold a conn and purchased a Buescher for that very reason
Still makes me laugh my ass off....
Thanks for the video - I’ve got a c melody sax w/ much the same problem that I’m trying to repair atm, I’ll try this
Patience and lots of WD40 and you'll get it.....just remember, don't force anything. I learned the hard way on an old Holton Alto, tried to force it and the slot part of the rod broke off. After that happens you gotta do major repair work to get the rod out. Then you gotta source a replacement rod. The rods through the years are 100s of different sizes. Luckily for me, I have a guy locally that has been in repair for ~40 years and has a box of rods to pick through. So, if you can save your rod somehow, you'll be miles ahead in your repair project. Rods on 100 year old horns isn't something you can easily order through the innerwebs. So, be patient (you seem to be doing a great job with patience).
@@hamjohn8737 I haven't broken the saxophone yet, but I did break a couple screwdrivers (LOL) Thank you for the encouraging words :)
Muy bonita canción no se inglés pero creo que se llama mátame de amor felicidades a la artista
Start video at 2:41
Sounds pretty good.... For a LAMP!
Badumpbump! I'm here all week, try the meatloaf....
NICE WORK!! Great creativity. Agree with jjmc00. Let's hear it. :) Thank You.
Oh, have you guys never seen my other vids? I'm not sure if I used this actual neck in a vid, but almost all my other horns are built using wine cork. It's just too easy not to use.......and as time goes by, they get dirty like any cork.....you can use dish soap and water to clean them and they look brand new again
Just check my page for other videos of C-mels being played.....take a moment to search out my Facebook C-Melody page.....it's the only one on FB dedicated to C-Melody
@@hamjohn8737 just watched. Good job on the Christmas tunes.
Can you play "Darude Sandstorm" next?
You stepped in what? Lol
Mouth piece comparison ruclips.net/video/wXtL3My6rQ0/видео.html
Great sax! Are you using an alto or tenor mouthpiece?
Hi Jazz, actually no, I'm using the correct sized C-Melody mouthpiece from FAXX during this vid. My taste has changed a bit and now I am using the old vintage Buescher mouthpieces that I find in the case when I acquire one of these Gems. I use the rubber tooth pad on the top and I also use a medium strength (like a #3 or #3.5) Fibrereed. The FAXX mouthpiece gives you a more modern Sax sound but I've grown fond of the 20s sounding vintage mouthpiece. I loaded a video earlier this month comparing the two. check my vids for the most recent. I don't know of anyone carving out a vintage re-pop of the old Buescher as of yet.
Funny how my taste has changed since I made this video. When you really dig into the sound the 20s style C-Mel produces, I've grown to prefer the 20s Mouthpiece and that unique sound you cannot produce with a modern horn using ANY mouthpiece. I have the FAXX mouthpieces for sale for $40 that produce the bold sound, but you go into my living room right now, you'll see a Beuscher relic with the rubber piece for your teeth and a Fibrereed carbon fiber Medium on my current Buescher. That mello sound is so awesome.
Thanks for the update! I have a Martin C melody with the original mouthpiece but have often wondered if it would be worth trying a new tenor or alto since a new C melody mouthpieces are hard to come by these days. Please let me know if have a resource for a new jazz mouthpiece for a C melody
Do "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"!
Ben Johnson lemme practice that one
This video doesn't tell you anything at all really a non-tutorial if you will, what was the point of it, it's way too short.........
What would you like to know? I don't think I made the vid with intention of instructing on anything. If there is something you need help with, just email me jhammons01 at cox dot net. I can walk you through any process you need help with
Now that I had a chance to look, didn't you see 8 vids with the same title?? This is part 1
Where is part 3? I have a Wurlitzer buescher stencil. Tried for a few days couldn't get the rod out. The screw turns with the whole key mechanism... tried pb blaster and heat and it would let go. I am out of loops what would you suggest? Thank you in advance!
I dunno what happened to 3 or 4...Just go to Five, I think I continue there.
And.....time and heat, time and heat...
John Hammons I stripped the head looks like I have to cut with a saw now 😂thanks though. Love your rebuild video series
Sorry it stripped on you. yeah, cutting the rod is a pain but sometimes they just cannot be helped.
How can you tell anything with all that annoying reverb? I would always take a Conn first as a general rule, but each horn is as individual as the person playing it. Beauty is in the ear of the listener. They are both great workhorses....it is amazing what you can get out of them if you have a great tech who knows you, what you like to play, how you like to play, what you sound like and what you strive to sound like, and most of all the set up...mouthpiece, ligature and reed. Nice to see them appreciated and brought back to some degree of prominence , even though they were the red headed step child of the sax family. At least , hopefully, they are not turned into table lamps anymore. I read an article of a sax found in an antique shop in France..a Selmer Balanced Action alto that was complete (no neck though) It was complete with a lampshade, light bulb socket, and a hole drilled in the bow for the cord and plug!
Chauncy Washington are you thinking I'm a professional? My opinion and a threfiddy will get you a Starbucks. Listen to the "sound" and make your own opinion
Hello, did you achiev the rebuild of the Grand Opera c melody ? Do you have a video of the result ?Thank you
Nice Video! I have already tried it while ago but I didnt have the right tools to sand and hole it. At least I'm not the only one trying it.
The "Sax" experts hated it when I posted it on some of the forums. "Group think" rules all. This is free and as you can see, very fast to accomplish. When you have to order neck corks and then go through the process of gluing them in place, and yet still having to shape them, the question begs...."why not?"
...and of course, when you tear your last neck cork during installation yet need to get a Sax out the door, your mind starts thinking of ways to beat the shipping time it takes to get more cork from Music Medic or whoever. *Looks at GFs wine bottles*
Thank you very much for the video :)
You are welcome.
Do you notice any difference in sound quality at all? Let's hear it now that you did it! Great video, I'm going to try it out now
Remember, if there are no leaks the sound will be identical. If you can patch up a neck cork with tape of some sort, you can see how this would be a better choice and there are no leaks if fitted properly. Also consider the synthetic material is 'never' going to dry out unless you subject it to UV light (leaving it out in the Sun) Plastic bags are proof of the durability of synthetic materials.
Buescher made adds in the 20's saying that it was pronounced "Bisher". That's what most players call it.
saw a copy of that add
forget where i saw it it was less than a year ago i have a buescher 400 and was looking at buescher historical articles
Your pads look like Instrument Clinic pads. If so you should either get the higher quality IC pads or get c melody pad sets from Music Medic they're around the same cost as IC pads but the IC pads have really cheap leather and are pretty firm and won't do a good pad job. musicmedic.com/pad-set-finder.html
That's actually how you tell if it's a vintage saxophone. I've got many saxes and all my modern Yamaha's have the thumb rest key and all my vintage saxes including my curved soprano have the side key. And most vintage saxes have both. Not just c melodies.
What's your main instrument, just curious?
1921 Buescher C-Mel, serial # 70001.....looks ugly but plays oh so smooth. If I want a big sound, I'll use the FAXX C-Mel Mouthpiece, if I want a mellow "parlor" style sound, I have an old Beuscher Mouthpiece that I use. The Buescher mtp takes very little air and is nice and quiet. I always use a Fiberreed Medium carbon fiber reed.....those little jewels are awesome,
It's pronounced Bisher
About 20 minutes elapsed time for that whole process
This one sold just a few moments ago with a Buy it now. That was a good horn, I hope it is going to a good home.
dammit! I pencil lead got stuck in my Tablets Microphone making every thing muffled! I have to dig it out.....Part two will have the sound fixed
A little shaky, I had a "few" by this time of the night....
Alright mate
You're making the turkey this year! LOL!
Thank you.....I didn't really come prepared to record anything.....it's just that when I got there and saw where the seats were...I just couldn't let that chance go.....The visual is fantastic and I'll keep it for ever.......maybe I'll figure out how to edit some sound from their live CD into the clip.....
Great visual!
The back lighting made the thing not focus....
