In australia we don’t have this poa bs it’s work or rest. Work is driving, paperwork, unstrapping/strapping, helping in unload/load maintenance to prime mover or trailer. Rest is anytime I’m not doing that. So in that situation of parked in bay ready to be unloaded and in a break room, sat to the side of truck, sitting in cab. Naughty drivers will strap/unstrap whilst on break so they keep the maximum hours for driving when interstate/long drives over 5+hrs of travel time to destination.

POA is for use when you arrive at the destination and they say to you. Sorry driver we can’t tip you for three hours. You then put it on POA in the case you used it it’s just other work. Hope that helps

Cab hopping every time it runs out of charge sounds great 👍 Or they could put bigger, better, heavier batteries on the trucks, making the load able to be carried less. More loads to do the same run that one diesel truck could have done on its own.

New pass and the toughest thing to get my head around is this working hours bollocks. According to Google, to qualify as POA; -The driver must be aware of POA in advance -The duration of POA *must* be known -The driver is available to resume work So, here's the big question; If you're told to pull into a bay and you're sat there twiddling your ... thumbs for four hours, but you were never told it would take four hours then two of the above criteria have not been met, so would that go down as Other Work instead??? It's a mine field! My instructor said if he's sat waiting to be tipped he's going on OTHER WORK as it's part of his job to sit around and wait. If he's allowed to exit the vehicle and go wander around to find a loo and some food he'll go on break - if needed. If you're un/loading yourself it's OTHER WORK. The only times he'll go on POA is if he's sat in an office/canteen waiting to be told what he's doing that day. That's just what I was told recently. It seems there's no set in stone / rule book on the matter. According to Google POA also doesn't count toward your weekly work hours. Seems like employers could easily take advantage of that one? Whoever came up with this stuff clearly forgot to add a "LOADING" mode!

if im backed onto a bay and i have access to a brew room and a toilet i put it on brake but if there's no facility's then i put it on POA, ive only been driving for just over a year so i might be wrong but ive never had an issue doing it that way.

Informative, thanks. But I keep it simple because of the type of driving I do. i'm either driving, doing other work, or on break. It's very rare that I'll be on POA

Hey Alan, Enjoy your videos, mate. I am a newish trucker and just wanted to ask a silly question: when you are stopped and being tipped, obviously not doing anything, maybe it takes 2-3 hours to unload, do you put your tacho on break for the full time you are stopped? because I assumed it does not effect the working time, or do you only put your tacho on break for the 15-45 minutes you need and then back to otherwork? ive never used poa and was not sure if you were suppose to use it in that instance? just wondering how you do it, cheers.

If you're looking a break near Cairnlodge, or even an overnight. There is a great wee spot at Harbro (only space for two trucks, 3 if you are cheeky and park right up to their gate 😂), go left at the roundabout instead of rejoining M74 northbound, and head down the old road. At night, it is hit or miss if there is space sometimes, though, but Route 74 is right at the end of the road if it is full.
