Making a 1940s Victory Suit with Simplicity 4548 #WWIIfashion #vintagefashion #capsulewardrobe
In this weeks video we are making the hounds tooth suite from 1942 that was voted on in the community tab. This was such a fun make - and while there were a few new sewing techniques I learned there wasn't really anything scary or stressful. In fact the make and fit went relatively smooth with this lovely suit.
Once again I was using second hand fabric I picked up from Art Parts Creative Reuse Center www.artpartsboulder.org/ - and boy oh boy did I feel lucky to find this amazing blue and grey hounds tooth fabric for under $10.00!
The blue hat I'm wearing is true vintage and I picked it up from an auction on eBay. I'm totally obsessed with eBay auctions - there are so many amazing things t...

Making a 1940's Inspired Jumpsuit out of Vintage Linens with Simplicity 1930

In this weeks video we are making a pair of overalls/jumpsuit/dungarees inspired some beautiful linens I picked up at the thrift store and by Simplicity pattern 1930 (which I recently discovered was published in 1936 not the 40's!). Once again this is a mash up pattern where we are deviating from the original by swapping out the top bib/bodice portion. Instead of using a second vintage pattern ...

In this weeks video we are making Marian Martin dress 9179. This dress was the pattern which received the most votes on my community page a few weeks ago. The printed fabric is a soft dress cotton and the top shoulder pieces are muslin cotton. This dress is very...

In this weeks video we are making a nightgown from 1956 with Simplicity pattern 1553. I choose this pattern after spending a week stuck inside with spring colds. It has in fact been a rough few weeks here in our house as we have battled one cold after another. Because being sick inevitably leads to mountains of laundry and washing I decided to make this nightgown out of very washable cotton. Th...

Hi there. I was trying to find out an instruction on how to attach the arms to this costume. Didn't see any instruction on that process. I have all of my pieces cut out and ready but cannot figure out how to attach the arms. JC in Pittsburgh
@@YaJagoff unfortunately I don't have a tutorial on inserting sleeves. There are generally 2 methods - sewing the sleeve tube and inserting it into the side arm hole (traditionally done with suit jackets, dresses, dress shirts, etc) or lining up the top middle of the sleeve shoulder with the top shoulder seam on the torso of the garment; sew it into place before closing the side seams. Then once the sleeve is attached sew one long seam from the wrist along the under side of the sleeve all the way along the side seam and down to the bottom of the garment (traditionally done with raglan style sleeve garments). I used the raglan sleeve insert method when I made the Ninja turtle costume as well as the Jedi rob. I think I go into further detail in those videos on inserting that style sleeve.
Ahhhh. Got it. Thanks so much for this!!! And thanks for taking the time to reply. I am a novice sewer… know just enough to get through my granddaughters Halloween costumes each year 😂
@@YaJagoff good luck on your dinosaur costume 😊
Fantastic job! You may want to check out Gertie's Charm Patterns for future reference. Her patterns always on point for vintage!
Thank you for the recommendation! I'll definitely check out Gertie's Charm Patterns.
Hello, Where did you buy the green fabric for the dinosaur body? How do you call this style of design-pattern on the fabric? Thank you
@@carmenbosch9652 I bought it at JoAnn fabrics. It's a polar fleece and I have seen it in stock this year at my local shop. Should be available online.
I’m making one right now! What did you use for the lining? It says 100% cotton lining without nap. Can I just do any cotton fabric I have laying around?
@@danicabrunner7359 because I made this out of thick and very soft polar fleece I didn't add a lining. But yes, I think you could use any cotton fabric you like. Know that quilters cotton will be more stiff even after washing. While brushed cotton will be soft and have less structure. Good luck!! ☺️
Super helpful video!! Do you remember about how many hours it took you to assemble the basic jumper part?
@@AMullllllllll if I remember correctly it took me an afternoon for the base. Then I think I double checked the length of arms, legs, and body on my son that evening. Then finished hemming. I think if you have all the pieces, read through the pattern before starting, and you know length measurements - it shouldn't take more than a few hours. This is a lovely quick jumper to assemble. Good luck on your project!
Well worth all that fitting work! Beautiful!
Thank you very much! ❤️❤️
Thank you. This is precisely what I have been looking for ❤.
Thank you so much for watching!
Love this, it’s beautiful & looks sooooo cosy ❤ love from Aberdeen 🏴
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!!!
Thanks for the tutorial. Only one question, what kind os fábrica did you used for robe? Thanks so much
It's a black and brown herringbone brushed cotton fabric from JoAnn fabrics. Soft and cozy and a bit thick for warmth.
I have a suggestion when taping your pattern pieces together use heat resistant tape this way you can iron them without the tape melting .
That's a fabulous tip! Especially for using a pattern again later! Thank you!
You look great!!!
❤️❤️
It s beautiful. Keep inspiring.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Late to the party: historically speaking, it doesn't look like it was uncommon for women to line their bra cups with felt to create structure against the more full-figured form, so I'd say you're right-on with adding that small amount of stash batting.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!!

You are a good knitter and I like watching your style. Thank you for sharing

Wow 🎉absolutely stunning! Love it!❤
Thank you so much!!
Is it Ok if I link a clip from this video in one I am making about B5880? You did a great job on it! 💜
Sure. Thank you so much for watching and following along with me!
I’m sewing B5880 now! How did you make the skirt puff out to the side so much? Was it simply a stiffer fabric? That’s what I am going for -- the va-va-voom of it is amazing!
It is absolutely the fabric that's helping it stand up so much. Even with the stiffer fabric I had to occasionally fluff the side piece throughout the wedding. If your fabric isn't stiff enough on its own you can always starch it - or if you really wanted to go crazy you could add a thin wire to the outer hem ☺️
Thank you @@ladyalexandriaj for those tips! I considered the wire, but spray starch never even crossed my mind! I finished the dress and I absolutely love it.
What pattern are you using?
For this dress I didn't use a specific pattern. I made a pattern myself based on pictures of dresses my niece said she liked. I tried to outline the steps I took in order to get this look. Simplicity 4764 is a child's pattern that would get a similar look to this - but won't be exactly the same. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching and commenting
Maybe you shouldn’t have brought the curlers all the way to the end of your bangs, maybe just the mid to end section of the bangs 🤷♂️
Since making this video I've found that using a sponge roller or pin curl works best for my bangs. And both yield a very authentic look
In the 70s we curled our hair in socks. We all had the long hair parted in the middle of the 70s so it was easy to do. Thanks
Socks! Brilliant 😃 I'll have to try that as my hair gets longer ❤️
Your machine is amazing. My husband taught me to sew, but I'd get it tangled. After my divorce I used my sister's machine and I'd get threads tangled and struggled to load the under bobbin thing so I gave up. Only hand sew now to mend. But watching this looked amazing on your machine. I always thought when I retire, I can take lessons in person. How about for now I keep watching your videos. I like how quiet and calm you are as you teach. Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I wish you well with your sewing journey - both hand sewing and maybe in the future machine sewing. ❤️
I hoped to see you iron out the pattern like you mentioned. LOL. That is one thing I can do :) As a gardener I love the first denim one you had on more than lighter colors that I would get dirty and I like the denim thickness to help shape me in my older years. You are so talented! I just subscribed so this is only my 2nd video to watch (1st had 2 parts). I live my life, dress, the house is decorated in 1940s things so I will certainly click those 40s videos! Thank you. Take care, Fran Forgot to say I like the new sewing room from my 1st video to this video. So cute and organized.
Thank you so much for subscribing! I'm so excited to have you joining along in the sewing room.
In the 1940s I'd have to bake a few pies or cakes on the ration in exchange for a slip/fittled slip because this is so very difficult, but your patience is amazing! Thanks for showing.
I feel that way about crotchet and more difficult knits. I'd have to trade a sewn item for a beautiful crotchet or lace made item 😄 We've all got the things that make sense to us ❤️ Thank you so much for watching!
Love the show and your vest,
Thank you so much
❤ the result and as an inspiration just bought the pattern to create the same dress asap. Hope mines will match yours.

What an iconic ensemble! In the Mood is a perfect accompaniment too.
Thank you thank you!
Turned out adorable! I love the wider gathered straps. They look a lot more charming. Great work!
Thank you so much!
Life happens sometimes, we'll catch up next week 😉
Wow, those sleeves would up great! Your problem solving skills are awesome. If you take your high bust measurement and add 2, that will give you the pattern bust size that you should start with. Most sewing patterns (both vintage and modern) are drafted for a sewing B cup (not to be confused with bra cup sizes), which is a 2” difference between the high bust and full bust. From there, a full bust adjustment might be necessary depending on the fit of the pattern.
Thank you so much for watching and for commenting. ☺️
Uuh, looking forward to the hats. I just got my eyes open for the Revival Designed patterns. The 30s RD dress I am sewing has a lot of potential. If I dont come by too many problems this blouse pattern is on my wishlist.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I hope your dress comes out wonderfully!
My favorite part of Lexi’s projects is how she explains how she solves “problems” with the material, especially and the bow! The hat is a perfect touch
Thank you so much Aunt Beth! For watching and for all of your amazing positive support! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love the fabric and total look!
Thank you so much!
Was the seam allowance included, or did it have to be added before cutting?
According to Mrs Depew's instructions/website seam allowance is included in these lingerie patterns. I followed this and did not add additional seam allowance.
Ok first of all, you work SO fast! Also, thanks for the tip on the closure at the chin. I had to modify mine as well, my son was complaining about it being uncomfortable
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I'm so glad you found this helpful ☺️ wishing you well and your little Dino lover too 🦖
I've just bought this pattern for my dino mad 3yr old, thanks for the tail tip!!
You're so welcome. Thank you for watching!

@@Righamc Thank you for watching all the way from Scotland! I'm so excited for your Dino 3yo! My little still wears his costume - I hope your little Dino loves his as well ❤️🦖🦕
Thank you for putting together this video. I’m about to embark on this project for my little one and hope it turns out even as half as good as yours!
Thank you so much! That's so kind of you to say ❤️
I enjoyed your video. I learned how to sew using vogue and butterick way back before the Internet was even a twinkle. I was very glad for the detailed instructions and over time developed my own ways. On many occasions I was very glad of the large seam allowances which the big 4/5 always had as my waistline like to fluctuate. I know that indie patterns only have a 1 centimeter allowance but honestly, speaking for myself of course, that's not always enough. X
Thank you so much for watching and commenting ☺️ I think having different pattern makers can be a great way to find the right path for many different people! Vogue steps were all out of order for me who learned with Simplicity, McCall's and Ann Adams 25+ years ago. Now, as I'm trying to expand my sewing knowledge, it's very interesting to see the differences between the different pattern makers and the changes each made throughout the years. 😊
@@ladyalexandriaj Thankyou. I do appreciate what you say x
Lovely skirt. From what you said the instructions very mixed up and that 2 inch seam allowance was over the top.
There was quite a bit about these instructions that surprised me. I think the thing I find most disappointing is that patterns written like this could definitely have a negative impact on new sewists. If things are too confusing people may become discouraged and simply give up.
Lol 😂 I thought you stoped knitting this. I already finished the cardigan and started the jumpper. But your still entertaining to watch.
Thank you so much for watching!
❤
Thank you for watching
Super cute! Do you have any of the yellow fabric left? I'm thinking bolero instead of sweater.
Oh a bolero would be very cute with this and fit with the decades which inspired this. I'll have to see if I have any large pieces left. I mostly had scraps at the end.
