More hidden secrets of the Jaguar Land Rover Smart Key
In this video, I’ll show you 2 x more secrets about the Jaguar Land Rover key fob.
In my previous video, I showed how to use the physical key to open the door when the smart key was not working. In that video, I used a small screwdriver. Thanks to a viewer’s comments just this week, I can see how silly that idea is.

When I was young, the concept of a flying car was reserved in my weekly magazine with Dan Dare on the cover - something that was from the future and most likely would never happen. Would love to know how to stop phone coming on stopping everything else on radio/tape player = looking for picture of fuse box in dashboard since no labels information inside dash flap & no black cover like boot with information, non on eBay to replace my baby's missing flip open cover with information inside ;-( Hay ho. Atleast I can stop it draining battery pressing Tape Exit button ;-) 2 fuses iv found out but witch 2 & where in 5 box's ;-) Work out Bluetooth once I can play Shep Wooly on tape ;-)
So does this dash cam need to be plugged in all the time or it has battery to hold power for a period of time, however short?
Thank you sir for this guide
Glad it was helpful
If anyone in the UK gets the reversing lights to work from the key fob can you please post here! It will not work on my 2010 XK 5.0 NA model.
good luck
I'm baffled. The reverse light trick doesn't work on my XK here in the UK. If pressing the button once turns the front lights on and pressing it twice turns the reverse lights on, how do you turn the front lights off because on my fob pressing the button twice just turns the front lights off!
This is the process. Click the button once. The headlights turn on. Wait a second or so and click the button again to turn the lights off. Double-click the button to turn the headlights on and then off at the same time as turning on the reverse lights. Click the button again, and the reverse lights turn off. The trick is the length of time delay between the first and the second press of the button.
@@xk-r-us OK, I'll give that a go! Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. Much appreciated!
@@xk-r-us OK, have tried again, 100% does not work on my car. I forget what it was now but there was another trick on the car a while back that you showed and that didn't work either. I think some of these things could be country/market specific, or maybe model/year specific. If anyone else in the UK can get the reversing lights trick to work from the key fob, please post here and let me know.
Didn't know about the reverse lights trick! I'll try mine in a minute see if it works. Do you have any vids on using the USB socket for a phone? Mine is a 2010 model 5.0 NA and I can't seem to work out how to dock my phone or use it to play music etc. The previous owner managed it but he had an iPhone and I have a Samsung Galaxy so maybe that's the issue? Any help from anyone would be very welcome
As far as the phone goes. It's best to use an iPod connector cable with a lightning plug on the other end. This may work: Lightning Female to 30-Pin Adapter, Apple MFi Certified 8-Pin Female to 30 Pin Male Connector iPhone Charging Sync Adapter for 30 Pin Docking Stations Compatible with iPhone 4/4s/iPad/iPod Touch
Also you need to connect the bluetooth: 1. Ensure that the ignition is on and the touch-screen is active. 2. Ensure that there is no mobile phone currently docked with the vehicle's Bluetooth® system. If a mobile phone is docked with the system, you will not be able pair and dock another phone until the current phone has been undocked. To undock a phone, select Phone on the home screen, then Settings and then Undock. 3. Using the mobile phone, search for Bluetooth® devices. See your phone's operating instructions for further information. 4. When the vehicle's Bluetooth® system is discovered, your mobile phone will list Jaguar as a Bluetooth® device. Select this device from the list. 5. You will now be requested to enter a Bluetooth® PIN. When pairing and docking from your mobile phone, this number is always 1313. Once your phone is paired to the vehicle's Bluetooth® system, it can connect automatically. If the phone does not automatically connect, you will have to connect manually with the Jaguar Bluetooth® System, via the mobile phone. Please consult the mobile phone
A couple of extra points, if I may - 1. The key blade in the fob is the correct tool to use to prise off the door keyhole cover, as well as to open up the fob housing itself - rather than using a random screwdriver, 2. A further 'trick' with the fob is that if you press the headlight button twice, it also turns on the reversing lights - which is great if you need extra light at the back of the car in a dark area. Hope this helps.
Thanks. You are a champ. Great ideas.
Thank you, this convinced me that I can install it myself.
Glad I could help. Easy - if I can do it, no problem.
Haha drug dealing ferraris!
The Ferraris may not be dealing drugs, but the owners-you decide.
Hy .Hello, does this also work on the XF type car?
If the fob looks the same, the answer is yes.
What a straightforward video and beautiful car.
Thanks-I appreciate the comment.
Bruce, your videos are excellent and have been very helpful to me as I recently bought a '12 XKR convertible and love it. Thank you very much! BTW--just ordered a CTEK charger, thanks again!

Such a great video I’m about to try using my CTek on my 06 XK X150 I’m newish to Jag, had it 6 months loving it but nervous mechanically 😅
I like the term. “Nervous mechanically” explains me to a “t”. I’ll be using the phrase in the future. Many thanks. Bruce
@@xk-r-us CTek fitted and looking good. Thanks again for such a helpful video… I’m working my way through them. They are all good and so helpful especially to this “mechanically nervy” Jag newbie. Despite awful UK weather I’m hoping to run out on decent days before fully getting back into it next spring Any tips guidance always appreciated Thanks 🙏
We are lucky here in Oz. Weather never gets too cold to take out the Jag. Unless you live in Melbourne, where there are 4 seasons every day. But I digress. It does get very hot from time to time in summer. But you wouldn’t want to leave the houses air conditioning anyway. (Unless you live in Melbourne in the cold quarter of the day) in a nutshell we can go out pretty much any day of the year.
Thanks for the video. Ibve bought a 2015 XK Dynamic R, although nit collected it yet. Do you know how the exhaust valves work with the fuse in place. Is it RPM related, and if you select Dynamic mode, does that effectively open the valves whilst in that mode? Any thoughts would be appreciated and thanks again nfor the video.
You have got it right. Dynamic opens the values. Not sure what RPM is needed in normal mode. I am told above 4000 opens the values.
@xk-r-us thanks for confirming. Much appreciated.
can this be used on a android phone
Yes works on Android
Just did this (as per @ianhortonplant) on mine, I think I actually heard the blockage get 'spat out' - fingers crossed it worked
Thanks for the video 👏 Huge amount of innovation is coming out of China, Tesla will certainly be struggling to compete, not on price but on desirability.
I do believe you are correct. The sleeping Dragon is indeed the next superpower
Stunned. I had a MG montego back in the day, and this is no montego. I now drive a 2009 Jaguar xk 5LTR naturally aspirated, which is with me till I die!!!
I had a "B" roadster in the day. The Cyberster is quite a bit bigger in the body and does not feel like it's got any heritage from the "B." However, times change, and things move on.
My brother in law said the 265 chargers were faster than the 351Xc,s they used,, The Police cars had Torque flight gearboxes not B Warner 35,s.. the back of the block had a special cast block from chrysler to run the totqflights.
Sounds detailed - love to hear more
How can I remote start my Jaguar using the key fob? Is it possible?
The simple answer - no, it's not a feature that they offered
Thanks for this I was looking for a guide to use it and you gave the best. It fits nicely behind up by the mirror and does not obstruct the view out which my old one did as my other half often complained of when going on a scenic drive.
Snap! - My main reason for buying it
The VS 5L couldn’t handle for shit neither, couldn’t keep up with a Mk2 Escort 1600 through some tight corners lol. I didn’t realise HWP used V6 VN’s either, the series 1 VN V6 were faster than S2. They weren’t as refined, so they didn’t have the restrictor inside the throttle body so they accelerated faster and had a little bit of a choppy idle, but I don’t remember mine having a fuel cutout like this fella described, but I used to shift mine manually when I was raci-- um, driving quickly on raceways, and you had to lift off just a little bit to get it to shift up, the TH700 didn’t like to shift under full load. I thought police had their gearboxes modified though to allow them to shift more firmly when you were up them.
They said they were standard issue - no mods
@ May have been something that came along later, or on V8’s only, not too sure.
Very good, amazing old cars would love to see that
They will be shown in the new premises that are being built in western Sydney
The good old days of Charger highway patrol cars and the F100 Paddy Wagons. Very rare these days to see a highway patrol motorcycle cop, do they still have them? I wonder if Roger Rogerson's old Ford Falcon station wagon is on display? I remember the Mounted Police stables down at The Rocks, wonder if they are still there.
Didn't know about the Rocks display
@@xk-r-us The police horse stables are not a public display but a working unit of the police I think.
Way too much talking.
The presentation was what it was about
Many years ago my late Father referred to the Ford F150 you are standing next to as a "Black Mariah", not sure if that was a common term. A friend in Melbourne has a very low mileage example of perhaps the last Triumph "Saint" issued to NSW Police prior to introduction of the Honda CB-750. I gather that he has history indicating that the Triumph was issued to Lismore.
I have heard of the term "Black Mariah" being used. It was probably a bit like "Paddy Wagon" - more a nickname than an official term.
Best explanation of these modes I have found! The first vid I saw of yours was on the 200 cell cats which was also very informative (and I'll be getting also after seeing that vid), so after this vid, Subbed! With that said, you said in Sport Mode, it will kick down quicker. I have a 2015 XKR, yesterday I had a guy pull up and and want to race, I was already just cruising along at 40mph (already in SM) when we hit it and it wouldn't shift down, so he got a really good jump on me and it took me awhile to reel him in. This is the second time this happened to me, although I've had the car for a couple of years, I don't get a chance very often to try nailing it in different modes to sèe what happens, guess I just need to play with it more to see what speeds it will kick down at. Have tried kicking it down at other speeds and sometimes it will kick down and sometimes not and it's pi**ing me off as these guys think they're faster from the initial start when I know if it would kick down they'd never get in front of me?? Ps; I should say it has the upper pulley and tune from Viezu, will be getting the lower pulley and another tune from them soon, but I don't know if that has had anything to do with it. I hear they have a transmission tune also, wonder what that does? Sorry for the long text
More interested in the cars than anything else,... Our families service station (Total, then became Ampol) in the Eastern Suburbs used to look after (service and repair) the cop cars in the 70's, 80's etc. Crown Srgnt, seniors & other staff were good friends, and they knew almost everyone in their area. We were opposite the Eastern Suburbs Maroubra Police HQ, just up from the Holden plant in Pagewood, and the police were great back then, and were respected across the eastern suburbs. Unfortunately, they've taken a dive in respect nowadays, & that's their own & the Gvt's fault, majority of em' nowadays are useless wannabe gang members with absolutely no duty of care for the public & no street sense whatsoever. Very unfortunate. Can remember one time, running late for a sports demonstration in the city (Martin Plc), some of the local cops pulled in to gas up their cars, they asked what I was doing that afternoon, realized I couldn't make it there in time (legally), so got me to jump in the back of the paddywagon with my equipment etc, and went on lights n sirens, jumped the gutters & got me there real quick, lol. Ol skool cops were the best.
Thanks for your insight. How things have changed
Thribble locking
What does Thribble locking mean?
I understand that Toyota's work the other way round where there car puts out the signal looking for the fob which can't be hacked. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I don't know about this, but I see that the Toyota option uses an app to access the key's function. maybe this helps with the signal from the car to Fob
I don't know about other JLR models but on my XF you can turn 'keyless' on or off with a certain sequence of button presses.
Interesting. Do you know the button presses -I'll try on the XKR
@@xk-r-us Here's the process for the XF, (also worked on my wife's 2019 XE) - To turn Keyless OFF - 1.Open driver's door 2.the fob must be inside the car 3.Press the Headlight button (on the fob) three times 4. then press Unlock on the fob. to turn Keyless back On - 1.Driver's door must be open. 2.Fob must be inside the car. 3.Press the Headlight button (on the fob) three times. 4.then press Lock on the fob. It is an issue
My pal is an independent auto electrician & has spent the last 2 years upgrading security on JLR vehicles at many dealerships. It was the only way dealers could sell cars because many UK insurance companies refused to insure them.
Sounds like he is on a good wicket.
With some newer cars(I’ve seen it happen with acuras, ford, Chevy) it won’t matter if it’s in a faraday bag😪 Reddit is littered with stories of this happening
That is really good to know. However, we are talking about Jaguar and Nland Rover here, so it still applies. I really appreciate you are letting me know - thanks
Thank s for the information. Now, Will it open without going inside the boot next time around?
Once you have released it - it should be fine next time
Hi, i don't have any green light on, on my rearview mirror and does not look like it dims either, is there a fuse to check, thanks.
Is it the original mirror?
@@xk-r-us hi yes, the rain sensor works fine, just no green light in the middle of the mirror.

I love the looks of the XK and considered getting one. I bought an F-type because I live alone and don't have dependents. I'm still in the market for one though.

I love the idea of seeing a 375 I’m sure my Dad would have known something about that he compiled a fantastic photo album of classic cars he always carried a camera with him and I would pour over that album which I now have David Pipers 250swb is in there along with a few other early Ferraris which are now all back in Europe no doubt. I only know of 2 275 GTBs that are still in Melbourne and haven’t seen either on the road in years.
@@simeonorive145 Lot's of History in the comments. Love to know what is happening with the 2 275s
@@VideoTutors I know Rusty French owns or owned one the other a silver I think long nose lives in Brighton owned by an old acquaintance of my Dad who has owned a number of amazing Ferraris a 1958 250 TDF comes to mind I was lucky enough to get a ride in around Dingley in 1992 I was 18 I still remember the sound and easily breaking the speed limit (100kph) in 2nd gear.
Wonderful, thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you too
Really enjoyed this; great editing
Thanks. This was editing in the days when I used to dub from one tape player to another. Cuts were hit-and-miss. In those days, I could only dream of how we edit videos today. In fact, I couldn't have dreamed, as I would not have imagined editing on a handheld device that is now known as a "PHONE"
One thing to tell anyone just in case they've been hiding under a rock is that if you have keyless entry get yourself a Faraday cage/box/wallet for both of your keys or you may wake up one day and find your pride and joy gone. Imho one of the worst car ideas ever, let thieves easily steal you car just to save the massive effort of pressing a button. Dreadful idea.
Good Thinking. How to protect your keyless entry car When at home keep your car key (and the spare) away from the car, doors and windows. Put your keys in a signal-blocking pouch, such as a Faraday Bag. Turn off wireless signals on your fob when it's not being used. Use a steering wheel lock or car alarm.
Timing chain issues are the 5.0 not the 4.2. The 5.0 are the more problematic. Although any car with a chain should be listened out for.
Very good advice
Thanks for reminding me about fault codes caused by battery issues. I've got a code or 2 now and had low battery recently. It's true what you say, I've had faults in the past just disappear once the battery was OK again. For some reason some if not all XKs seem to suffer with parasitic battery drainage, many owners connect a trickle charger in the boot permanently!
If the car is not in regular use, the trickle charger is imperative
Doesn't work on my 2010 XK 5.0 NA. Shame I was all excited about seeing the unfo
That's a shame
Don't buy this, no use you can't read license plate. If you are not believing me, you can check in this video.
OK for the price
Absolutely fab! I cannot think of more beautiful cars. But, of course, I am a biased old Englishman.
You and me both!
What a feast for the eyes.👍
