Photographing a Cardboard Boat Race

With fall sports a few weeks away I needed to find something to shoot. A friend turned me on to the Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Festival. At the Festival they have a cardboard boat race. Sounded interesting. I grabbed my Sony a7IV and the Tamron 70-180mm lens and headed to the festival. The event was short and I was a little late and didn't get the best location to shoot from but, it was still n...

It's that time of year when I travel to Arizona to check in on my dad. What an adventure. I did not arrive at my destination on time. And sleeping in an airport is not too enjoyable. Everyone Makes MISTAKES, This Was Mine
Since most of the Meike Multi-Power Battery Pack For Sony MK-A6300/A6000 don't come with a battery adapter piece, where can I source that part. The piece he refers to as the "battery guy" at 1m12s? Thanks.
Hey capcityorgnzr - All of the Meike power grips I have seen for the a6000/6300 come with the adapter. If you are in need of one, I would recommend reaching out to Meike. Thanks for the comment!
Aye nice studio lookin good! 🙌🙌
Kelescope!
A tip if you weren't aware. Sony (and other brands too) are now making the ISO of their cameras work best in increments. So if you double it, you get a cleaner shot. It typically starts at 800. Then it goes 1600 -> 3200 -> 6400 -> 12800. So a shot at 3200 would typically look cleaner than an ISO of 2500. So for your setup I'd either go 3200 ISO and lift the image in post, or go 6400 ISO and boost the shutter speed slightly to compensate. I would never use ISO 5000. Source: Sony themselves.
I forgot to ask this, do you use electronic or mechanical shutter when shooting sports?
I always use mechanical. For sports photography, a mechanical shutter is usually the way to go since it avoids the rolling shutter effect, which can make fast-moving subjects look distorted.
@sportsphototv thank you very much. I just noticed theres a delay with the shots i took if i rely on what i am hearing inside the camera. But i guess its more of getting used to it.
I think you take pictures of what is interesting. I have had countless sports injuries and I would only be upset if people took pictures of me like a mob 2 inches from my face with flashes. Other than that, I can't even describe why it would bother me. So take the photos, and use them for a legitimate reason.
Thanks for you comment Greg. I have come across athletes who don't care and others who do. It can be a fine line. I too was an athlete and wouldn't care if I was photographed injured.
@ I feel similar ways to athletes crying. I know we are all people first, but I don’t want to embarrass you by trying to help tell the story of the match. So I tend to take a few and stop quickly.
Really good ideas, thanks!
I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
Nice tips. I only do one of those 5 currently
A few of the more prominent sports photographers that I know around here also do the showcase/event stuff, and most also do senior portraits. They build relationships with a lot of the athletes they cover during whatever sports season they shoot, and voilà! Instant clientele. I did a few senior pictures of my sons this past summer with my backup camera (a whopping 24MP), and the resolution and clarity is more than I could ever need. There is so much info about portrait settings available, it was pretty easy.
With the transition to reels and such on social media, video is blowing up. I get more calls for video productions than I do for photo work. I'm glad I started doing it about a year ago.
Tenho uma sony 7 IV , ja tenho uma 70x200 sigma sport 2.8 , mais quero uma lente mais objetiva ate 400mm ou 600mm , para fotografia de esporte em geral
I would look at getting the Sony 200-600. if low light isn't a problem.
I spent time in the white mountains in Pinetop AZ with my grandparents (decades ago) and it definitely snows in AZ!
Great video. Currently I shoot with the a6700 and I struggled with an ISO of 5000 to 8000 for indoor volleyball. Do you think I would notice a big difference with the a7iv? I seriously considering making the jump.
Hey there TimK. Yes, I feel you would notice the difference.
Hello, does Canva allow us to put information on the back of press pass too.
Yes, you can put info on the back of the card. I like putting a QR code linking to either photo galleries or website.
Hey! this video was very helpful for me starting out with softball photography! just one question though. how were you able to get a pass to be able to take photos of the softball game?
Hey TheDailyDan! I am glad it was helpful. I do have a video about getting a press pass but it's kind of lengthy. So, to summarize the video, I contacted the local state athletics association. They are the governing body for media and are the ones who gives out press passes. I will be up front and tell you that usually at the high school level you don't always need one unless it's playoff time. Here is a link to my how to get a press pass video. ruclips.net/video/Q6VZDj-4NOQ/видео.html

Buying this camera used today as my backup
Good choice.
Keep this video up unless I can download on TikTok?
good review, although every shot is a stop overexposed by the look at it.
Well done. I agree with what you said. While shooting my granddaughters volleyball game (high school varsity) on of our girls got hit in the face (missed that shot) but got one of her on the ground holding her face. I did not put that out on social media.... but hindsight... I was thinking what may have been better...was to taking photos of her team mates reactions of her injury. Your thoughts?
Thank you for your comment! I completely agree that capturing images of the other participants, along with the reactions of the fans, would have been a great addition. Emotional moments often result in some of the most powerful and memorable photos.
Very nice.
Thanks for commenting.
Nice video. I currently shoot a few sports with a Sony A7 3 and a Sony A9 2. I have been thinking about selling the A7 3 and getting another camera either an A9 2 or a higher megapixel camera. I also shoot with the Tamron 70-180, and love the size and sharpness. What is your suggestion for another camera. Can’t justify new so it will have to be used.
Hey there cecilhudgins! Another a9 2 would be nice. The A7IV is less expensive and since you like megapixels, it has 33 to work with. I have seen it listed for under 2k. Let me know what you decide. I am interested. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank Heavens that sports started back up here!
Are you shooting raw or jpg ?
I shoot both RAW and JPG. I like to have images I can quickly push out on social media, which the JPGs allow me to do. I also want the RAW files for when I want to a more in depth edit.
I use auto iso too, I have enough to think about already and auto iso makes your job easier. Your crops are spot on, crop for effect.
Agreed, in order to grab some great shots, it does take a fair amount of thinking. Thanks for the comment.
One thing I found is that they only want to see high school photos. I have more than the required equipment (Nikon Z8, 400mm f/2.8 lens, etc) but I submitted six photos that I had taken of Division I college sports. All of my submitted photos had been published so someone thought they were good shots, but MaxPreps rejected them as not meeting their standards. I'll probably try again as soon as I can get a contact in high school sports.
This is great but resizing is a paid subscription feature. But thank you for this guide video. Very helpful!
Thanks for the comment. Canva does offer a 30 day free trial. Or, almost any photo editing software will allow you to resize your final product.
Great video! I’m a videographer, I shoot a lot of football! Considering buying the IV! Would you recommend this camera? I’m wondering how it would do for night games?
Hey @beengoated thanks for the comment. This is definitely a good choice for night games. I shot some night video of football and also indoor volleyball testing it out. ruclips.net/video/UpVZDkQqoWM/видео.html
I took the idea from this video and asked one of the newspapers I submit to, if I could use their logo on a pass I was making myself. Instead, they made one for me and edited it according to my suggestions. Now I have something to wear at all of these events with my name, face, and purpose printed on it. I catch many parents, coaches, and game officials glancing at it. Once you have that, as long as you're respectful and act like you're supposed to be there, most people will leave you alone and let you do your job.
This is great! Congratulations. Yes, always be respectful.
Learning your gear is important. Modern cameras have TONS of built-in features that may make your life easier, if you explore a little, figure out what they do, and practice with them. And yes, better gear helps expand your creativity.
I started to have problems with this lens on my Canon R5, After Canon released a new firmware 2.0, all of the images comes blurry. Canon said it could happen and I should consider buying the RF lens, too much expansive.. And Sigma ignore this problem. Tons of people report about this problem and nothing changing...
Thanks for the info.
I can’t understand why after initial reset it still have old settings at picture profile
Good question. I wish I had an answer but I don't use picture profiles. I guess I need to experiment :-)
Why, I always see this lens tested to capture the scene in very bright light, but I never saw this lens tested in low light conditions like outdoor at night ...
The lens performs great in low light night time conditions like at a football game.
@@sportsphototv do you have an issue about the dust that can insert into the lens like other lens ?
I have never had that issue with any of my lenses.
For those photos that are heavily cropped it's important to start with a tack sharp image. Thanks for the deep dive on this lens. I guess I'd start by analyzing a few photos taken with a tripod.
Since it was a rental lens, I will start with shooting with another rental and see what results I get. I also plan to share a couple images in my Discord so that others can compare for themselves. Thanks for the comment.
It was probably the lens...or more accurately, the camera/lens combination. I've found that as I've progressively moved up to higher resolution cameras over the years, some of my older OEM lenses have not been able to resolve at the same level and the images don't look as sharp as I remember with my lower megapixel cameras. DxO has examples of this phenomenon. Some have (usually big, pro-level telephotos), but I've found that acquiring newer versions of my older, shorter zooms and primes has resulted in much sharper images on those newer cameras. Case in point, I had an older model of 85mm/1.8 lens that I was frustrated with the lack of sharpness when shot wide open with my Z9. With my D5, it was fine. Then, I sold it and replaced it with a newer model and the images are absolutely stunning in their level of detail - even wide open. It could also be that the lens doesn't focus very quickly. Again, I've found that with less expensive models, they can't seem to keep up with fast action and I get lot more soft images. Again, I think this is exacerbated by cameras that have higher megapixel counts. What worked fine on my D5, doesn't work as well on my Z9. By the way - I ALWAYS look at images at 100%! LOL
I have had some of the same issues you mentioned and I agree. I plan to post two of the photos taken in Discord. That way others can see better what I am talking about. In several series of shots this slight lack of sharpness showed up. I plan to hit some summer USSSA softball games and try a different lens. Thanks for commenting!
About 12 years ago (when I was shooting with a 7D) my main lens was the Canon 70-200 2.8. OK. Then my wife bought me the Canon 75-300 4-5.6. I've since used that lens for general shots when driving around. But, people often get that one as an inexpensive sports lens, frequently high schoolers shooting for the yearbook, school paper, etc. I have to bite my lip to not come across as an equipment snob to them about that because I soon found that lens to be woefully inadequate for sports. (I would have read reviews before buying it.) Not just the aperture. It's just not up for focusing fast enough for sports. I seems like a lens intended to be marketed for budget sports shooters. I hope not because Canon's doing users a disfavor in that case.
The current limitation is poor high ISO performance. This limits shutter speeds available except under very bright conditions. The day phones begin to shoot comfortably at ISO6400 and above, they'll begin to handle sports routinely. I doubt we're more than a few years from that eventuality...
The biggest hurdle for cell phone cameras is that they have significantly smaller sensors compared to professional DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. A smaller sensor size limits the amount of light that can be captured, which affects image quality, particularly in low-light conditions often encountered in sports arenas. Because of this, I feel the ability of cell phones to capture sports is many years away. Thanks for the comment!
The QR code is a great idea
The photo is fine to me.
Great video. Very thought provoking. It makes me wonder if photographers and the media prefer certain images depending on the athlete. College and professional athletes who are portrayed as the girl/boy next door rarely have unflattering pictures posted (e.g., Tim Tebow or Livvy Dunne), but those photos must exist somewhere. As for high school (and younger) athletes, it's impossible to know what any individual would be self-conscious about. Someone might be concerned about a shot where it looks like they have a double chin or a guy might be concerned about looking short. We wouldn't notice these things or think that they're a big deal, but the kids would. And we don't know what they've been bullied about in the past and how that picture may feed their insecurities or give bullies social ammunition. It's a tough situation and nearly impossible to navigate short of letting everyone see every image before the photos get posted... and that's impossible to do in a timely manner.
You're right, the way the media shows different athletes can be unfair. It seems like some get better treatment than others, which might be because of biases or deals behind the scenes. For example, some athletes or athlete’s managers might have agreements with sports editors about what kinds of pictures can be shared. And when it comes to younger athletes, it's tricky. We want to show in all their glory, but we also have to be careful not to hurt them by sharing too much. Letting athletes approve their own pictures before they're published sounds good, but it's probably not practical most of the time. As a sports photographer, I try my best to consider how the photos I share affects younger athletes' mental health. Thanks for your comments Janice. I always appreciate hearing from you.
If I could have a press pass to cover one sporting event, it would probably be the Indy 500, or a baseball playoff game.
