Hi Rod, I'm having a trouble with the air heater leakage equation. so right now I'm doing my research internship in coal power plant about air heater and currently investigating about air heater leakage. I read the ASME performance test for air heater and it shows this equation "Leakage% = ((% CO2 gas entering heater - % CO2 gas leaving heater) / (%CO2 gas leaving heater)) x 90" why does it multiplied by 90 and not 100 to get percentage? Even though I dont really use this equation since this power plant measure 02 instead of CO2 but still, get me curious.

I am from Western Australia and have 31 years experience around mills. I have seen significant rises in mill DP due to the accumulation of dense minerals within the mill. One day I decided to extract a sample from a running mill in the roll area. There was a concentration of around 40% dense minerals (iron and pyrite) inside the mill even though it was only 1% in coal. It was that bad that mills had to be shut down at night and the sand spun off the table. The classifier had to be left fully open to allow the dense minerals to exit the mill, there was no choice. I believe there are some mills in Texas that have the same problem. Feeder run back is a real issue. Forget about HGI, you can have the best HGI and it will not help you. LOI makes the ash unsalable. For us the solution was to fit a device I developed to separate and remove the dense minerals from the mill. This would allow us to close in the classifier to achieve the required PF finess. The problem now is to get the Raymond classifiers to work. If they are not exercised they jamb up tight. There are better designs. The ultimate aim is to automate the classifier and have it respond to mill DP, in that way the PF finess will be at the best it can be. These separators have now been running for in excess of 10 years now. They intercept and extract about 15 tons per day of dense minerals at the mills before the boiler. Over the 10 years about 200,000 tons of dense minerals have been diverted. Averting one tube failure due to back-pass quartz erosion easily pays for the installation. Anyway am now working with Mike Santucci , President of ECG in Akron Ohio to further improve the design. The improvements make it much easier to install and significantly reduce the manufacturing cost.
