When you hold a fish that far in front of you, it hard to tell how big it really is, as there is nothing in scale to judge it by. You're far enough away from the fish that you may as well not be in the picture. It just looks like a fish. There's no context. It's better to hold it close to your body or to your side.

Thanks for focusing on competitive fly fishing. This is a great niche for a podcast. Competition style fishing is here to stay and it’ll only continue to grow in the US (especially the East). Keep experimenting with the format and segments. It’s like fishing, you just have to keep trying to make logical guesses until something works.

    • @TheArticulateFly

Thanks for being a listener! Before the hatch starts, I often fish two soft hackles. The point fly (or the bottom fly) is a beaded nymph or beaded soft hackle. Depending on water depth, I will attach an unweighted (or slightly weighted) soft hackle on a tag 12 to 18" up the leader. As the hatch starts and progresses, the trout will usually move from the bottom fly to the top fly. You can either continue to swing the flies or shift to a dry/dropper with an unweighted (or lightly weighted) soft hackle dropper. Sometimes, the trout will be picky and eat emergers or cripples close to the surface or in the film. You can fish a soft hackle here by greasing your leader down to the last 6 to 8 inches. Hope this helps. Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions.
