As an avatar creator/optimizer, I can tell, VRChat should make same changes on it's performance ranking system. There could be actually a lot of good avatar ranks if VRC wouldn't consider the disabled parts into the performance. Like swappable clothing and hairs. You aren't gonna display all the clothes and hairs on the avatar, so it wouldn't really have performance issue because of that. Obviously, it wouldn't be easy to implement a system like that, but the 70k triangle count is very small for anything if you have toggleable parts. Currently, it's much better to just make a lot of separate avatars with different clothings and stuff, because it's the only way where you can have the most things on them with a good performance rank. It's entire possible to make good looking optimized avatars. Aiming for Medium or Poor performance is still plenty good on PC, because even if you make a Medium avatar, VRChat only allows you to block the avatar if it's below Medium (unless someone blocks you by the shield level). On Quest, it's a bit different, but you should aim for Medium because the default settings will block your avatar if it's poor or below for other users. But so far, I haven't heard any people blaming others because the poor performance ranked avatar (maybe because I wasn't playing on big events?). People can just block your avatar anyway if they aren't satisfied with it, it's them who allow your avatar to be displayed, not you. Tools what you mentioned can be great to optimize your avatars, but they definitely won't give you the best results. If you want the best performance, you manually need to remove the faces from your mesh that isn't visible to the eye, because it's covered by the clothing. Most of the avatars wouldn't even need more than 1 material slot if they all use the same shader. Even if Blender has the CATS optimizer plugin, texture atlas is a good starting point, but it also won't give you always the best results. For example, if you downloaded a lot of clothing parts as a whole, and you only want 1-2 things from them, but it has a single texture for all the meshes, then you are gonna waste a little bit of texture space, because even if you combine it for a texture atlas, there will be parts on the texture, that you aren't using. Also, Medium performance is still pretty generous on PC, you can have up to 128 PhysBones and 256 PhysBone colliders, 256 bones, 8 skinnedMeshes, 16 basic meshes, only the 70k triangle count is the biggest problem. Performance wise, I did some tests where I downloaded a very poor avatar on PC, optimized it on good performance where it almost looked the same compared to the original with the very poor ranking, but the optimized one was able to run 4-5 times faster, and quest avatar was even better; up to 10+ times faster. So it is in fact worth a lot to optimize your avatars if it has 50+ material slots and a lot of meshes displaying on your avatar. In my opinion, it's worth to optimize the avatars, but the lot of people don't know how to do it or they just don't want to waste time on it. I'm not saying it's easy, but once you get used to it, you can optimize your avatars way faster, and make less mistakes through the way on it.

My maybe unpopular opinion is that Poor and Very poor avatars should be banned. I mean, the ones already there shouldn't be touched, but it should be banned to publish new Poor/Very poor avatars. Shield system to avoid poor performance is coping imho. Btw you can recycle a material by using a vector of textures, so instead of having tons of materials, each one with a different texture, you can cycle through textures and maintain the same material. That's a good way of adding more colors to a piece of clothing, for example. Yeah, that's what i think. VRChat crashes a lot and it's been unoptimized for a long time. You find avatars that are heavier than entire worlds, that's dumb. Excellent, Good and Medium performance should be the only types of performance to be allowed. Everything that is Poor, or straight out trash (very poor), should be banned.
