feed your bettas frozen blood worms, chopped live earthworms( i buy them at walmart as fish bait), and chopped frozen raw shrimp you can get from the grocery. that will condition them. also i keep 20 liter tub with infusoria that occurs as plant matter breaks down. you def will need it when the eggs hatch. feed it with a turkey baster. i use a microscope to check the culture. also keep a culture of microworms handy. as to water, i use pure rain water i collect in a tub under a drain spout. keep the pair separated but close enough to see each other for a week or so. when they try to get at each other through the glass it's time to put them together.
@@bobs5596 Thanks for sharing! I dont think we have bait at Walmart here lol
@@onegallon sporting goods shops often carry live worms, otherwise you can order them if it's not freezing outside. i have a couple bins i keep in in the basement. one thing about worms, you have to keep a light on over the bin or they will all crawl out the first night.
@@bobs5596 I never heard of infusoria so this is interesting. I do have a guy who cultures micro worms so I'll probably reach out to him. BUT these live worms I will try for sure, just have to find a store that sells them (maybe bass pro shop?). Appreciate all the recommendations and it's been noted!
@@onegallon infusoria is very easy, cook some broccoli and put it in a jar of water in the sun. use aquarium water, and add stuff from a puddle which will inoculate it. after 3-4 days you will have protozoans to use for fry feeding. the betta fry are microscopic when they first hatch and need feeding almost immediately or they will starve. get a 15X hand lens if you don't have a microscope. some of the larger ones are visible if you have sharp eyes. look at some of the fish channels that mention infusoria. don't worry about ordering some special ones, the the ones you will grow are best.
@ Thanks, I’ll look into that. I do have Hikari fry food as well so I have that ready at least. Broccoli in fish water is worth trying!
Thanks for sharing subbed 👍
Like the setup bro got me wanting to film a video
@@fishingvibestv Thanks! Why not? That would be cool to see 💯
@ Ill do one soon !
Try using Stanley knife blades instead their much safer and not flexible.
@@timothyluckhart9376 I’ll definitely look into that! Thank you!
Dear csopsrs: I never had success, keeping Ceratophyllum demersum, though I’ve acquired some, several times. I gave all my driftwood (Malaysian and Mopani) away, in favor of local rocks (which I tested, to ensure they are aquarium-safe). I’ve found that driftwood encourages blackbeard algae (Audouinella). Thank you, for sharing more details, regarding your, amazing set-up. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
@@ejbrinegar That’s so true regarding the blackbeard algae, one of the driftwood had some…
Dear Sir: Has your crayfish ever injured any of your bettas? I hope this doesn’t happen. I tried keeping Neocaridina davidi (cherry shrimp), with a Betta splendens, in a 10-gallon, breeder tank. I was sure the betta would devour shrimplets, so I put only, male shrimp, in the tank. I didn’t suffer any losses. But, one never knows when a betta will decide to attack adult shrimp, so I discontinued this. I was wondering why you don’t include any, true substrate, in your tanks. A deep substrate provides lots surface area, for beneficial bacteria. I realize, that the ceramic cylinders you include have lots of surface area. But, personally, I like the look of a black substrate and black background. I paint the backs, of all, my aquaria black. This hides unsightly equipment and power cords. I use coal slag, to cap compost (chopped and baked horse manure), as a fertilized substrate. The black background and substrate really makes the hardscape, flora, and fauna stand out. What temperature are the unheated tanks? I know that the optimum temperature, for Betta splendens is 80°F. I noticed that you heat the breeding tote. If your, local, water treatment plant uses chlorine (not chloramine) you can leave buckets of water, from the tap, uncovered and the chlorine will evaporate, within a few days. This is not the case with chloramine, so if they use that, a dechlorinator is necessary. I find it helpful, to keep several, uncovered buckets, for use, in water changes. If I do a major, water change, I have to add some, heated water, from the tap and some dechlorinator. Thank you, for sharing details, on your, terrific hobby. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
Thank you for the detailed message! Lots to talk about here. So it turns out my Bettas have a non aggressive personality so they are okay with the shrimp. As per background, I have used that in the past but prefer to keep the tanks clear for now, I might in the future. As for the tap water, I do plan on doing a comprehensive test so I know what treatments options to choose. AND as for the temperature, 80F is fine, I have mine set to around that. 🐟🐟🐟
Dear RUclipsr: You have a super-terrific station set up to breed some fantastic species of Betta. Your hobby looks interesting, but your videos have no dialogue. I and other members of the FishFam would like to know what you are doing and see you. I hope you will upload a video, describing your hobby and showing yourself, so we can get to know you. Keep up your, tremendous hobby and sharing it on RUclips. All my best, Sincerely, new subscriber, E. J. Brinegar P. S. May I know your name or how you wish to be addressed, please?
Thank you for the feedback, well received 😊. I will be making adjustments ahead of the next video 👍
