Ego is the self constructed for survival in the world. The world appreciate the glorification of the ego and personality which is rooted in feelings and emotions conjured up by the body. The being of spirit of God is an opposite self to the ego which will be suppressed as long as the worldly self (ego) is promoted. The ego is unwhole since it is constructed fulfill the needs of the world which does not have its foundation in the principles of God. To give up the ego we have to give up the appreciation of the world and promote the spirit of God (or the God self) instead of the the worldly ego. Since the ego is rooted in the body (or feelings and emotions generated by the body) St. Paul was not entirely wrong to say that flesh is sinful meaning that promoting the needs of the flesh will take you away from the spirit of God.
