This plant doesn't look edible, but it is | Foraging Sow Thistle

In this video I forage for Sow Thistle (Sonchus asper, also prickly sow-thistle, rough milk thistle, spiny sowthistle, sharp-fringed sow thistle, spiny-leaved sow thistle...). This a common plant, but it is very spiky and considered invasive, so I believe most people are not aware that it's edible. I have a question i moved to a new place and I'm surrounded with forest, honestly I want to explore the area but I don't know if it's safe from wild animals(wolf bear etc)since there aren't many people around i have no one to ask, although i know there are coyotes around. What tools should I put into my bag if I ever go to explore. Or should I go to explore in the first place 😅

Climb Chamchaud, visit Circe de St Meme all the villages in the loops around there, the monastry where they make the liquor (go to the rear and walk the area to get a rear view). Never gets boring.

    The problem is the danger of wiping out whole colonies. Better to enjoy the discovery take a photo and walk on by.

    • @vincentpetit2109
      @vincentpetit2109 2 года назад

      While it's very true that we should not harvest all the plants of a colony, humans have been harvesting wild plants since the dawn of time. In this case the colony seems to do fine year after year, probably because some plants always escape humans and can produce flower, but also because it's a bulbous plant. The issue is not so much a few people harvesting a few plants than large scale systemic changes like artificialisation of the land and climate change

    • @davidpole3813
      @davidpole3813 2 года назад

      @@vincentpetit2109 true - I don't disagree at all, and yes- industrial farming and climate change are probably bigger culprits, but I should have said that I live in Bath and over-foraging can be inspired by the same basic instincts as egg collecting and so on. Some people get fired up by rarity. We gather field mushrooms and pick flowers and berries from Elder trees but they're not under any kind of threat. We once watched in horror as one member of a fungus foray hung back and picked an entire stand of Ragged Parasols. Too late to stop her, sadly. But I agree, responsible foraging (within the law) could be a force for good if it leads us to protect these habitats.

    I was just in a big field of thistle today, in a nature area where there are a lot of signs that it is invasive. I was thinking that people probably don't very much know that all thistles are edible. I am thinking instead of eradicating them, they could be juiced and shared with the community, where there are a lot of native people who are very susceptible to covid. I think this is a time where people's livers could use that tonic.

    You will get a knack for it if you just keep trying. Mushrooms aren't as hard as you may think, just take them one mushroom at a time and learn a lot about it. Before you know it, you will have a whole lot of knowledge stored up! Grab a couple different mushroom books, because it is always great to cross-reference multiple sources. I would recommend sticking to the easy to identify edible mushrooms such as lion's mane, chicken of the woods, Boletus edulis, maitake, shaggy mane, chanterelles, oyster mushrooms, and stuff like that. Have fun, and keep up the great work! Really enjoying your videos. I am from Southern Ontario, Canada and I teach foraging.
