The cat ('Gadu') and the bear ('Arch') are instantly recognizable Indo-European words. Gadu is pretty obvious, Arch less so - but I happen to know that in Greek it's pretty similar and it's this word ('Arctos' in Greek) that gave the word 'arctic' in English.

Same with "cow" ( _gav_ ).
Similar to latin ursus.
Sarban in Persian we say exactly the same word for cow “gov”. I honestly sense more similarity between Armenian and Persian (specially the old Persian), more than any other indo-european language.

If I were to learn Western Armenian, how difficult would it be for me to switch to Eastern? Thank you.
It's not an easy question...but I'll try to explain a few things. It is certainly completely different in terms of accent and wording. There are some letters which are pronounced differently as well. The grammar is similar. The western dialect sounds mellow compared to eastern which is more aggressive as a literary form. My opinion is that one has to choose either WA or EA in order to avoid confusion in the learning process. If you happen to be an absolute beginner, Western Armenian would be much easier to pick up. Well, I already started Eastern Armenian lessons last Monday, but thank you for the advice nonetheless. When you say there are differences in pronunciation, are you referring to the aspirated versus unaspirated consonants?

actually I speak both fluently , it helped a lot that I lived in Armenia for a while, also depends if you are good with languages , I switch between both on the fly
