Taking a look at several turns of this new Pirate game by David Kershaw and published by White Dog Games. Please note: I made a mistake with the victory conditions. If no one reaches 5 VP then each player determines the lowest score of all three of their categories and that will determine victory. As regards pirate ports, they acquire goods when a player trades at the ports.

Thank you for the detailed playthrough of the solo game, it has helped a great deal with my first play through. I don't mean to nick pick but i think you have played the fighter/cap engagement incorrectly. The engagement will be either a dogfight or turkey shoot depending on the initial composition of the strike group and that will not change during the engagement, even if the only escorting fighter is shot down so your second CAP should only be able to engage one of the Japanese bombers not both. Explained better on page 7 of the rulebook.
@@jameskillala2713 you are correct. I should do an updated video in the near future. Thanks for watching
About half way in but can't help but think this system would make an awesome X-com wargame!
Glad to see you back - just a few suggestions. 1 - a battle board to manage all those cities. 2 - chit pull rather than dice - personally I dislike D6 divided by 2 etc. Otherwise - where can I order!😂
I enjoyed the review, it baffles me that a "game" could get you so frustrated. Just sell it and move along. I have the game. It is not the best but not the worst either. It is a game. Thanks for all the reviews that you do. We appreciate it.
Chandragupta - the founder of Mauryan empire. I will use BGG topic for more useful feedback.
Thank you. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how that was eluding my brain the other day.
Glad to see you back Tim. This looks awesome.
Thanks. 😃
A good game, created with passion, excellent video Tim Korchnoi.
@@luisalfredodamianpuma4830 thank you for the compliment.
Really love your concept for this game! I haven't played Ancients for years, but this brought back fond memories of hours spent with Avalon Hill's 'Successors'. All the best taking it forward :)
@@andrewchoong2895 thank you. I appreciate the feedback.
Great pair of videos...thank you very much!
Oh no I am 3 years late
What strategy game would recommend for the pacific war. It should be fun, easy rules, soloable, not too long. Can be on the lighter side. Thx
Hi. Are you sure that you can perform two explotation with the same stack.... (8.1.12 There is no subsequent EA following any EC)...?
You came back… I had already unsubscribed….
Tim, I really want to get into wargames that aren't too complex. Total newbie, I only will play solo, and Pacific theater is an area I'm heavily interested in. Would you start with the Worthington ones or is there another ?
I think Worthington is a good place to start but make sure you check the BGG homepage/consimworld page for the game after your read the rules but before your first play as Worthington almost always has some areas that need to be clarified. That being said, their games are good low complexity and have a good feel for the topic. Hope that helps. :)
excellent vid. yea getting this game.
There is currently a funding campaign on Gamefound for a slightly revised version, but the proposed single-player mode leaves something to be desired, as you actually take turns managing both sides...
I really enjoyed this playthrough, looks like a fun game
Still watching this video but I can't help but ask about the glass-looking screen you have over the boards. What is that? I think I may need one. Thanks.
That's my plexiglass.
Did you ever play the combined game?
Probably my best memory from childhood. Circa 1990 aged 12, I picked this up at a flea market in Canberra (Trash n Treasure) for cheap. Me and a friend would set this up for entire weekends around then. I remember Loading invididual bombers with their torps and bombs and I didn't appreciate how good the spotting rules were. I wasn't distracted by the internet, I didn't have brain damage from alcohol and I could fully understand the rules at age 12. Now I have trouble understanding or focusing on monopoly at 46 : (....I'm resolving to give up alcohol and the internet this year. I already gave up my mobile bone...gotta return to clean living and focus.. I also remember being dissapointed at age 12 that I could't land Marines or Army troops to take over those islands!
Dont you do the small groups first ? This creates hold orders, that moves the counter up four places. So when it gets to the bigger groups they are more aggressive. At least that whats happens in the playthrough i watched.
I sure wish you showed the dice throwing, because i had no idea how many dice you were throwing, so it was not clear how that combat resolution occurred. otherwise it was a great informative video.
I understand the concept of siege combat in an unoccupied city, but what is the process if there is a defending unit inside the fortress?
Best pirate game is Merchants & Marauders. Pyrates! from White Dog looks decent, too.
I found M&M to be too long.

Hey, I agree Task Force is a really good game. The only minor issue I have with it is that the Fog of war is perhaps not as strong as it should and it is a bit too easy to locate the actual enemy taskforce. But it is a minor issue, all else works fine and the production quality from VUCA is amazing. The fog of war is always difficult to represent in a hex&counter boardgame without having 2 maps and hidden movement etc.
I agree. I usually take the markers for the opposing side and mix them up and place them in random locations so I am not sure where they are exactly until they either can launch a strike on me or I am able to search the location. It works fine for me and once each side finds the other it becomes a contest of being "firstest with the mostest"
La Belle Epoch Rang a bell. Nice list was always tempted by the Pacific but... Eh? Is there a Card based Pacific / Japanese game any one rates? Or best solo?
Thanks Tim, great video as always - you are making me spend money as usual! Have bought Pyrates - have you tried David's other solitaire games? I particularly like ReConquista, but Irish Freedom, Solitaire Caesar, Vietnam Solitaire are all very good, and The MOG is awesome!
I had the EXACT same experience with Fighters of the Pacific. Your reaction made me feel better.
To quote a dave Chappelle skit "ridiculous man!" Is how I felt after trying it.
Any publisher for And the War Came?
Nope. Larry is planning on self publishing. I'm hoping he'll stop by here and give us all some information soon.
He has to take this to a publisher!!! White Dog might be a good start as they do the games print-on-demand, so no big set up costs.
I have Mr. President too and have not played it either. A bit intimidated by it all.
me too!
About And Then the War Came. Has the designer pitched it to the well known publishers? Are they even aware of it? Do you know the story on this? It would be crazy to hear that they said hard pass and moved on.
Thank you, Tim. Your video instantly cost me 60€. I've ordered La Bellle Époque. It is probably the game I've been looking for without knowing it. I had no clue that game even existed. All the best to you for 2024.
Please post your thoughts after you have a chance to play it. I had a blast with it!
I've been a big fan of Worthington games for a long time now. Games you can play in an evening or afternoon, great components, and some really fun and well designed games. Love their two rulebooks in the games now.
Agree. Worthington has really grown in the last decade. They've become one of my top three wargame companies.
Thank you for your update on 2023!
You're welcome. And thank you for watching. I know you've been around for awhile now 😉
For shackled to a corpse, it will be 1 pp per turn to negate this. This event stays for the rest of the game. Since AH got 1 pp from Germany, didn't they negate it for that turn?
Played twice now. Pulling only three cards at random for the germans and it works perfectly. There's also a card for the Russians were it makes it very hard for the Germans to take Leningrad. Moscow did fall temporarily until the Russian winter offensive at the end of 41. From 42 onwards the Russians get more cards, their discards are also cheaper to buy than the German ones. I find it's quite a good game with tons of replayability. You may want to revisit this one.
I'm glad it worked for you. I sold my copy at a yard sale nearly two years ago. Too many other good East Front games out there to waste my time with this one.
Wow I actually saw this on there site and thought I should get it but I got kaiserreich instead 😂
Thanks, that map made me think it would be a more simplistic game, but now that you shown how it works... it looks much better!
Looks cool and interesting!
Takes me back to the 80's when I bought all of these from Hamely's toy store on Regents Street. If I remember rightly the boxed adult games were on the top floor!
Well done, I always liked playing the Squad Leader better than ASL
I'd love to get Squad Leader. 😀
This is cool. I got my first vintage Avalon Hill game a couple weeks ago. I just went ahead and got the original Stonewall Jackson's Way. It was still in shrink, way cheaper than buying a copy of the MMP updated reprint. So it was really neat for me to look in one of these old boxes. I think the parts list in mine says 1995 as well. So maybe there was a whole bunch of NOS copies of these games from that year floating around. Edit: nope, I just checked again and the parts list says December 1992. So I must have an original printing. Nice!
I opened all 4 games. SL, COI, and COD all 1995. GI was 1992.
I played "Advanced Squad Leader" for decades back in college....then sold them all off (right before MMP reprint thank you!) and repurchased this game and the expansions. IMHO they are a better game as they are MUCH more playable. There are a few other alternatives that hit-the-same sweet spot of ease of play vs. "realism" but this is a good one regardless of the game's age.
Tip: Ignore ALL of the vehicle rules in the original game (seriously!) they were completely replaced in the supplements (first one I think) and they are MUCH better.
Ardwulf always mentions a game store in Cleveland called The Warzone Matrix. I had to go to Cleveland for a business meeting this past summer, and as a perk of driving up from Columbus, I checked out that shop on the way back, and found a shrink wrapped copy of this game, which I happily grabbed!
