I was driving to my regular 90 minute full body reflexology appointment when I listened up to the panel, leaving off at the great point about "identity-based trauma". I really appreciated a lot of what this professional had to say. I never accepted the idea of "imposter syndrome". I have experienced others trying to treat me like an imposter, but life taught me early that there is sometimes a need to reject other people's opinions of who you are because of their biases. The building I walked into for one of the many activities of self care I engage regularly had the internet blocked out. When I emerged 2 hours later, I listened to the rest! Great job everyone! It was great to listen to all the young IT professionals sharing their experiences. I am certain the wisdom of your experience will benefit a majority of those of us in the space. I say young because even the person who has 20 years experience in a practice of IT is young from my PoV. Not all of us are as described, live to work for the company often to our medical detriment. Once again, the same professional said, something along the lines that some of us are taking what we take to make it better for those who come behind us. I am consciously aware of doing that over my career. I have had two young Black female professionals lose respect for me because they questioned why I let people speak to me in the way they do sometimes. One, I know who I am so it means nothing to me. Two, it is a reflection of their ignorance, not mine. Three, I appreciate the fight of the young, it is appropriate to that season of life. There are lots of ways to transform spaces and we need all of our approaches, as long as we are all doing something, including resting. There is not one way to measure capacity, worry for others around that is useless... Even though most leaders in IT are in their 40s, some seem to have cognitive dissonance going on about those who laid the foundations for Silicon Valley (not the show, the place 😉) and have you all forgotten the ages of those who started Apple and Microsoft? Please do some research and call the names of those who came before even me - www.purpose.jobs/blog/celebrating-black-history-black-leaders-in-tech - there are more than these. Don't forget, we've been here... from a person who learned to code in HS in the 80s and haven't moved far away from IT right up to today. I have several friends that look like you and me who have been in STEM for a long time. Please honor your forerunners. In my case, my uncle retired after a long career as an Engineering leader at Boeing and my mom was a key punch operator when I was young, and was part of Intel before the Pentium chip was released. I also have a friend who's mother was even deeper in tech than mine who still works in tech. We haven't been here in great numbers yet, still, know that we've been here. Being invisible when people who look like you are talking is challenging, especially as some of us continue to whether this experience at work. Blessings fam!
Love this so much!
B! I love you! Thank you for the Build Your Dream Network shout-out! So treasure our conversation at Grace Hopper.
Having the opportunity listen to you all. Playing your voices on my tv screen so that my children can hear. Seeing powerful minds that look like us in technology. Is history in the making! #Game-changers
