Hey Carsan. Congrats on being selected! The PFT occurs through the entire program. However there is always a small handful of people that get kicked out within the first 2-3 weeks for not meeting minimum physical fitness standards. You’ve obviously spent a lot of time preparing your package and you’re an amazing candidate on paper so definitely spend the same time preparing your body.
KMTHAN Thanks for the input! Hard to get another perspective unless you know someone who went through it in another branch! Thank you for your service!
Zach Pezzuolo there’s tons of yelling and training but it’s hard to film when you’re getting your ass beat. Except for the very beginning, most of this video is later on in the program when we’ve gotten some privileges back and get treated a little more like a human.
Hey Kera, you’ve got a number of options. 1) Apply to the CG Academy (same as any 4 year military college) and get started as soon as your graduate high school. 2) Earn a bachelors degree on your own at a regular college and either apply to OCS as a civilian or, like me, enlist first and apply as an active duty Coastie. 3) Earn a certain number of college credits (I apologize but I don’t remember what is, maybe 90?) and apply for CSPI (college student pre-commissioning initiative) - in this route the CG will Pat for the rest of your college and you’ll be guaranteed as a candidate as long as you are able to meet academic/performance requirements. Highly recommend you locate your nearest recruiting office and talk to a recruiter to talk to. Note* not all recruiters are created equal. Let me know if you have any other questions =)
Sorry for the late response guys. Just wanted to clarify that OCS is a mixture of prior enlisted, civilians and direct commission civilians (I.e. lawyers, engineers, etc.).

Seriously Coast Guard, you carry our flag like a bedspread going to laundry? How about folding the flag after evening colors? At least it didn't touch the ground.
Former USMC here (81-93) USCG is badass. My only interaction with them was early 90’s Desert Shield/Storm at Al Jubail in Saudi Arabia. These guys were awesome! So much “can do!” and “will do”! Highly recommend youngsters to join the United States Coast Guard!
We tried to capture as wide a scope of the program as possible. Myself and other candidates filmed this video so it was hard to capture the beatings since we were...getting beat.
Where's the video on the Direct Commission Engineer program in the CG? We left the base everyday to play golf and drink beers for only four weks. F that OCS crap!
CG Max, Yesssss. I was in the CG Direct Commission Engineer program in 2004. It was three weeks long and I was already an LTJG upon arrival. Piece of cake. The OCS guys/gals were so jel, lmao 😂.......However, , I was a Chief when I went thru and already graduated from The Chiefs Academy and USAF Senior NCO Academy. Great time👍🏻
You will swim with goggles, minus your glasses. I wear contacts so I was able to wear them under my goggles. It's up to you if you feel comfortable enough swimming with "impaired" vision. On the plus side, you won't be performing any underwater EOD work ;)
In the Marines’ boot camp you have to take off your glasses during swim qual. I have terrible vision & couldn’t see s**t which wasn’t very fun, especially the tower jump. But you just kinda suck it up and make it work.
Nate Burke Since the number of candidates that get selected for OCS all depends on annual Coast Guard budget it can vary from year to year. If I were to take a shot in the dark, I would say on average, 4-8 people don't make it through. Our graduating class was 63 when it was all said and done.
those cod water suits look awesome. I wonder how long they can be in cold water in them before issues of hypothermia. I really like how it shows the development of team work and encouraging and supporting the members of the team.
this was very interesting. Thanks for posting it.. I am interested in knowing why some of them chanted "I want to be a coast guard medic". Is it what they become upon graduation from OCS? What is the job of a coast guard medic like after OCS
upcycle Revolver is right, he was just singing a cadence. He chose that particular one because he was prior army. The Coast Guard does have commissioned medical officers and graduate programs in the medical field, however. Let me know if you'd like more info!
Saccadon Coast Guard officers primarily serve in an administrative role, but there are certain officer career paths that are more operational than others. For example, a CG pilot or commanding officer of a cutter is very operational. There are three different routes a CG officer can go: Response, Prevention or Aviation. Response is known for search and rescue and law enforcement. Prevention is known for vessel and waterside facility inspections and aviation for flying helos or fixed wing aircrafts. There are also a few specialty paths one can go, such as legal, medical, etc. The CG offers competitive Grad school opportunities.
Both can happen, actually. There was a member who failed out within first two weeks because they were grossly unprepared physically. Anyone else who had trouble was placed in remedial and ultimately graduated.
this looks very simulator to sea cadet boot camp. i am joining as a officer in the coast guard or marine corps depending on some different factors in my life.
Thomas Jackson wow. my story is actually very similar to yours. I am an e1 in ftl navy sea cadets and I hope to be a public affairs officer in the US coast guard.
They didn't have the red ball caps when I went through in '98. Looks odd. Of course the ODU didnt exist yet either. They just screamed at us in trops. I noticed the "grinder" was no longer painted in the parking lot either when I was passing through New London and stopped to show my kids last month. And we never got our food in the Wardroom. And if we braced as slow as they were bracing in this video.....
what was the part when the people in chair cages were flipped upside down? How long are they forced to stay under water? I want to apply for OCS and I am a good swimmer but I can't hold my breath worth a darn
Hey Ryan. Don't worry at all if you can't hold your breath. That portion of the program is normally reserved for NOAA cadets. The program provides you the opportunity to improve your fitness in running, swimming, push-up, sit ups; although I would recommend training well in advance for everything because there was a small number of people who either over estimated their level of fitness or under estimated the program and were ultimately kicked out of the program. But if you're a great swimmer than you already have good lung capacity and stamina.
The coastguard and marines go pretty far back with their relationship to each-other. Most famously probably during WWII. (ie SN1 Douglas Munro at the Battle of Guadalcanal on September 27, 1942.) SN1 Douglas Munro was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on that day, which included sacrificing his own life to ensure the safe evacuation of 500 Marines.
I really want to be a part of the CG when I get older, I guess right now is when I should really look at what I want to do when it comes time (I am 15)
My friends dad was a Captain in the CG, we asked him why is the Coast Guard basic training on par with the Marines after watching a basic trining video of Cape May, and his response was that how can you go out into a storm and save someone else life when you can't even save your own. He said that the training in the Coast Guard has proven to be effective when peoples lives are at stake.
The training use to be harder and much longer, they accurately made it easier because of some of the injuries and shortened boot camp. But the Coast Guard only take the best people, you need a higher ASVAB score then any other service to get in. But it one of the toughest boot camp there is next to the Marines. Just the Coast Guard learn different things, but Coast Guard personnel can be assigned to other services if needed. As I spent almost two years with a Naval Security Department. So we are trained to handle a wide range of situations. And to stay alive in a wide range of situations.

Take care, mate! :)
hi, hope u can answer. but im thinking of joining the cg and being an officer since i do have a degree. 17 weeks of training is a lot, how brutal would u say it is? in trying to decide between this, or something lower..or the us air force. im female too, and the usaf + rape is a bit unnerving.
My female cousin went to CG OCS and she was in TERRIFIC shape (she can run to the sun and back, she beats ME in pushups and she has abs that'll make a personal trainer blush) so the main point I'm driving home is don't worry about how difficult the training is, once you are in shape, that training will be a breeze
Three weeks if you go into any of the reserve officer programs. I am thinking seriously of doing the Direct Education Entry program. Anyone know of that?
When is the PFT taken during OCS. I am going in June
Hey Carsan. Congrats on being selected! The PFT occurs through the entire program. You’ve obviously spent a lot of time preparing your package and you’re an amazing candidate on paper so definitely spend the same time preparing your body.
Thank you. I am going to ROCI which is 5 weeks instead of the 17 week OCS. I think we only take one PFT instead of multiple
The NOAA corps trains with them correct...I am thinking about applying to the NOAA Corps.
I would definitly join, if the basic training wasn’t like hell...
Army OCS graduate here. I have to say the Coast Guard OCS teaches a lot cool stuff compare to Army OCS.
KMTHAN Thanks for the input! Hard to get another perspective unless you know someone who went through it in another branch! Thank you for your service!
Is this actually legit? This is OCS for the CG? I thought there would be more yelling and training.
Zach Pezzuolo there’s tons of yelling and training but it’s hard to film when you’re getting your ass beat. Except for the very beginning, most of this video is later on in the program when we’ve gotten some privileges back and get treated a little more like a human.

Honestly, this looks better than school to me (which is concerning:/)
That enlistee pft gear lol; reminds me of enlistee boot.
Damn this looks like a vacation compared to what the enlisted coast guardsmen have to go through at Cape May.
These members are enlisted they go to OCS to become officers so they have the basis already just need to break bad habits.
@@Timmy-qc1ss fat chance of getting into USCG OCS without being prior enlisted. It does happen, but not often.

Nope.

Do yall think it's less intense than Navy basic training. Because navy basic was a slice of cake just left because of medical
Finally a Coast Guard video with good music.... guess the O's are the ones with the good music taste.
Kudos for learning CelNav. Had a buddy drink a beer at The grave of Bowditch after he passed at REC Boston
I honestly can’t wait to be there in 8 years I’ll be 22 then
There is also the option of attending the Academy if you wish.
Do officers still have to do boot camp
I thought this is all about the OCS , not cub scouts summer camp
I can’t wait to get in their position in 13 years..... 😰
I would pay big money to watch the Kardashians do this
I honestly can’t wait to join and serve my country, United we Stand
I was feeling it until like 4:05. Is coast guard ocs really this chill?
We tried to capture as wide a scope of the program as possible. Myself and other candidates filmed this video so it was hard to capture the beatings since we were...getting beat.
Excellent video. Just subscribed
looks like typical bullshit
What did the 63 candidates 19 officers part of the intro mean
I'm guessing that only 19 graduated
