❤️❤️‼️‼️
Met him in the early 1970's at a little festival in Lafayette, Tennessee. He played that gourd fiddle
Hi Bruce! I didn't meet Leon until around 1982. He was a genuine "character" enjoying working on instruments more than playing them. Come see us in Huntsville sometime! Thanks for all your contributions!
AMEN
WOW
Great channel! So lovely to find these- Wilson would visit my family back in the 70s when he would come up to Oho for the Nelsonville fiddler's contest. Thank you for posting. Of all of the fiddlers of that time he was one of the best, and a good man.
I knew him. Great man. Very funny. The real deal

That's my great great uncle❤ his niece was my wonderful grandma
My group took second place at a old time fiddlers convention with this song last week. I'd never heard it before we practiced it.
What a very nice version of a 300 year old song the dates back to George Washington and the American revolutionary war
excellent loved it
Magnificent
Thank you for joining youtube
loved it just excellent
Eighth of January is the tune.
Thanks bob, for these videos. Such an amazing longbow fiddler. I met him at cliff top. Wish I could have spent more time around him. This old type sound is dying out
You're welcome!
She had great showmanship
This is my grandfather , my dad was his oldest child and played banjo with him sadly I don't think we have any recording of them together.
Met her in 1973 at a small festival in Lafayette , TN. Wonderful banjo payer. So good to see her here.
💟
😁
Rock on out!!!!! 😍
I hope they’re all ded
I lived in Glenville, West Virginia in the 90's up Bonnet Hollow and frequently visited with Melvin at his home if I were on my way to Gassaway or Summerville or someplace like that and he always had time to play some tunes. We'd sit in his kitchen, which looked like a room decorated in the 40's or 50's with brightly colored padded chairs in chrome and covered in vynal and knick knacks all over the walls and drink coffee and play old time. It was like being in a room that was a cross between an old house and a dinner. I always had a great time and once I expressed an intrest in learning "crooked tunes" with extra measures and crazy timing he seemed to make it his mission to teach me as many as I cared to learn. He was a good old man. I left West Virginia just before 2000 and returned to Raleigh, North Carolina where I'm from and never saw him alive again. When I finally heard he'd passed away it sort of brought a tear to my eye but I wound up with a bunch of great memories and odd fiddle tunes (that very few know) and I still think of him as a friend I could always twin with. I bought a copy of the CD, Cold Frosty Morning that he produced around the time he was invited to play at the White House and got his National Endowment For The Arts Award and now it's getting warn out. I think it may have been recorded by the Smithsonian Institution but that escapes me now. Melvin was surely a national treasure.
Lumma Wine was my great grandma.
What an amazing performance by a very amazing man.
Benton sold me the fiddle he's playing here a couple years after this film. I still have it and play it lots.
Benton's wrist!
I remember him..And there is Mr. McBride my old buddy..My grandpa was buddies with Leon's brother and well known back in the the day, R da P Crowder..They were friends way back in the day on Sand Mountian Ala...Grandpa always wanted me to play with RDaP when he came to visit but it never happened..I like Leon's goard fiddle..sounds good..I remember his brother Monte Crowder..I'm sure my old friend Mr. McBride the guitar player is long gone..Grandpa said RdaP Crowder was hired to play on the Grand Ole Opry but he couldn't read so they let him go..old old memories
Just the ingenuity on that gourd fiddle alone just makes me want to make my own gourd instrument, god bless America. 🥲🥲
That was my grandmothers sister . I always called her aunt Bertha 😂. She was so sweet and talented.
Bertha is my grandfather's sister. Bertha and all of her siblings are half Native American Indian. Let me know if you would like to communicate with me.
@@DollyPorterfan Ada was my grandmother . She died in 2003 . Yah, she always talked about her mom being part Native American.
@@racheljohnston7846 I have family photos of most all of my grandfather's siblings, and information. If you are interested. I get Ada, and Rena mixed up, to me they look alike. Let me know if you want to email, or phone, and I can share the photos.
