Shelf Control
/SHelf kənˈtrōl/
noun
1. the struggle to counter the effects of board game entropy.
"the current state of the gaming room is due to a lack of shelf control."
Shelf Control is a channel following the antics of Norm (modern board gamer since 2009), and Lisa (converted through marriage in 2017) as they play through the many titles collected by Norm over the years in order to determine which games stay and which ones will be passed on.
We will be playing games, both old and new (board game entropy is a constant force), and looking at it through the eyes of gamers of different levels of experience.
While we will be expressing opinions regarding the games we will be covering, it is not to tell you which games are worth playing, but rather to share our preferences and experiences so that you can compare our tastes to your own when making decisions.

Sheriff of Nottingham... Another Random Review
To me, the summative 1-10 final rating in a review is the MOST important part. My reasoning: 1) Sometimes, that's all I have time for. Say I'm standing in McKay's and there's a game I've never seen in person before. What I usually do is pull up BGG and look first at it's average rating. Then I click on the "Geekbuddy Analysis" button and see what my curated list of geekbuddies say about it. If I'm seeing numbers 6 or lower, I'm probably moving on. If it's around 7 or so, I'll probably read the comments and game description to see if it sounds good to me. If it's 8+, I'll likely dive in even deeper. 2) When I have time to watch/listen to a full review, I love all the discussion (and even quite a bit of rambling). I used to have a podcast myself, and exploring games (which was the podcast's name) is something I love to do. But it's very easy to get lost in the weeds when you do a deep-dive on a game like that. Particularly if there's something new or interesting in a game, there can be a lot to say about it. However, that doesn't always mean that the ambitious, interesting, or novel things in the game were actually pulled off and worked as a whole. So I always thought it was still important to give that final rating just so a regular reader (to the blog) or listener (to the podcast) would have a frame of reference on where it fit in with other games I reviewed. 3) It's intuitive. I can appreciate complex, multivariate methods of rating a game like you mentioned. But we don't always agree on which variables are important to making a game good, and we probably don't all agree what a good rating on each one of those variables means. But on a very simple level, everyone understands that rating something 9/10 means that you really love it, that a rating of 6/10 is pretty mediocre, and that 1/10 is something you really didn't like. To me, the real folly in reviewing and ultimately rating a game is to think that there's any true way to objectively evaluate a game. Ratings, and reviews in general, are ultimately all about the subjective value that a reviewer has for a game. I actually came up with a little rating scale of my own that I have used personally, with my game group, and formerly for my blog and podcast. I'll see if I can link to it or post a picture of it, but basically, it just gave a few benchmarks that I thought helped me to identify my subjective feelings about a game and then helped me to quantify that into a rating. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YXTryGfJsGZqY8WSfCnty925KtUJTN5LV4C4xfHNl_M/
I agree with you and found your scale quite accurate (the quotes section especially). I also will use BBG rankings as a first pass when browsing McKays, then dive deeper if given a reason (sometimes a mention during a totally different game discussion causes a game to catch my eye - example Tyrants of the Underdark)
I introduced my brother to Scythe and he was overwhelmed! Now we play 7 Wonders Duel regularly, sometimes Magic The Gathering and other games 😂
Learning how to baby-step people into gaming is an interesting discussion. While I don't endorse the "throw them into Scythe" approach, it does make for amusing stories.
@ I agree. Actually, I underestimated the complexity. Fortunately he didn’t get discouraged and now we’re planning to play Concordia and Mosaic
Both good choices. I think Concordia is a bit easier to grok for newer players, but I could be wrong. The scoring in Mosaic is a bit harder to grasp from a teach and needs some play to feel it out (if I remember correctly, it's been too long since we played it).
Project L is really cool! The tactility of the Tetris pieces is great!
It's so satisfying to handle. We've only played a couple of times so far, but it's so easy to play to finish out a game night.
Random reviews are good! Thanks!!
The random reviews are fun! It's good to get a perspective on a wide variety of games.
Got my copy. Missing the whole cosmetic side. Had a broken villain I had to reglue. Not happy with the quality of the components and miniatures overall for what we paid. The game was good. But this will probably be sold or donated. It just wasn't worth the time or my money. I hope you guys enjoy it more than me.
Wow. You should definitely contact their customer service, Kickstarted games usually make more copies than necessary to cover replacement parts as needed. I have yet to have a company not make things right after receiving a damaged game. I'd like to hear how things go for you - hopefully, they make things right!
That's probably my copy of Sentient I liked it quite a bit, but you know, I just have too many games. Even then, I probably wouldn't have sold it if I had known that they valued it so lowly... And that's likely my copy of Warrior Knights (and the expansion) as well. Whoever was doing the pricing the day I sold them was clearly not on the top of their game. I'd feel a little bad about not getting their real value in credit, but I also found a book worth $180 on sale for $7 that week, so the McKay's karma came back around to me anyway.
That's kind of my philosophy when it comes to McKay's as well. Usually, I'll have a mental idea of what I think the trade in is worth, and most of the time, I'm pleasantly surprised with a higher amount. Seems like if they lowball one thing, they highball another (totally by accident, I'm sure). If I knew the individual breakdown of each item, I'd probably feel bad about some of them, so I'm glad they just give the total. LOL Good luck with your McKay's karma!
Really wanted this game, ended up deciding not to even though had plenty of time. Really liking the look of all the minis and the ice of the storage, but too big for me and I'll probably end up going with the retail version. I noticed their site now sells all three versions of the core box, while they have stock, I don't know when they may sell the various expansions.
Retail should play just as well. We just had to have the painted figures since our son likes Defenders of the Realm so much.
Mine had the same size hole in I think the same spot.
Must have been on the other side of the same forklift. I hope yours was packed as well as ours and came through ok!
@shelfcontrolgames came in safe and sound
Got mine last week. My son loves it.
That's awesome! We're looking forward to getting our games in with the boys.
Looks cool, but wow that’s Huuuuuuuge….. hard pass for me if only for the size of the box
Boxes... That expansion box is bigger than most other game boxes. Not sure how storage is going to go.
Hero are blue and villains are masterminds are red. Villans are purple.
That's good to hear. That helps those who don't have the painted version tell the board state at a glance!
Got my copy.... So far im only missing OMni tron X.......Charge token . It must have fallan out the punch board when they were making the games ..
I've had that happen in a couple games. I should check my punchboards. You never expect those to be missing a piece.
I was an Oblivaeon backer, and by the time that arrived, my group was long past our Sentinels of the Multiverse phase. And I thought THAT took a long time to arrive (two years late if I remember)...
Yeah, I think this has been my longest wait for a game. Hopefully, it keeps the record in the future!
The names on the box are alphabetical & there was a place on the survey via the pledge manager where you had to type in the name you wanted. Might want to check your survey to see what name you gave them
Awesome! Thanks for the info. I checked the survey and found the name.
This looks HUGE!!!!
It is a top level production. The pieces look great on the board.
Ohhhhh....So excited for this!
We're waiting impatiently to get the boys together to get a game in. We may have to cave in and play it ourselves first!
Interesting! I've got to look into the Amsterdams. Thanks for adding a couple to my wishlist!
Glad we were able to show you some good games. While looking for Amsterdam, keep in mind that it reimplements Macao, so if you happen to find a copy of that cheap, it's pretty much the same game.
@@shelfcontrolgames gotcha. good to know!!
I just got my copy as well. I am glad I got it. I went for the game because I love sentinels of the multiverse card game and I enjoy the world they have made
We're similar, but with Defenders of the Realm (that the gameplay is based on). Have you tried DotR before getting this?
I got mine tooo im excited to open it... be sitting in my room for almost a week.
@@shelfcontrolgames I have not played DotR. I am looking forward to playing it. I knew it was different then the card game.
After 10000 years
Certainly felt like it. We almost miss waiting for it. Like not having it was a universal constant.
Still waiting for it in Germany...
Oh no! Have they given a timeframe for it at least?
Any plans to do a play through?
Absolutely! I'm working on how best to record one (like solving the overheat issue). Would you rather watch a solo mission or with more players?
@@shelfcontrolgames Doesn't matter to me. I just like to see a game in action as that helps me learn it better than a rulebook. (and then I can read a rulebook after and it suddenly makes more sense after seeing it play out).
I'm the same way. I'll see what we can do.
Such a great game. The expansions add so much more to it. Great video. Thanks!
Sorry guys, we are still working through mic and camera issues. Eventually we will figure out this RUclips thing….maybe?
Finished up to 3b. Is there going to be an update?
There will be... once progress is made. If you've seen our recent videos, we're doing some basement/studio renovations and those have taken up a chunk of time. Plus, our Thrift Store Find videos have shown that we've picked up more figures for Undead or Alive (and even more in an upcoming Find video). I've got my work cut out for me!
Like the game WINGSPAN very much, it has beautiful cards and eggs.Thank you
Agreed. The production is what you would expect from a "deluxe" edition from other publishers!
Good job Norm!
I picked up that version of Merchant of Venus when it first came out, but I never had much interest in the Fantasy Flight reworked rules. I have always played with the "classic" rules, and had a really great time with it.
I predict that our experience will be similar. Fantasy Flight likes to add a bunch of small thematic touches like unique leaders and such. They add to the world, but also add to the rules overhead. Thanks for adding your vote for the classic!
I hear the iconography on the cards is a challenge. True?
It can be a challenge, there are a lot of icons, and not all of them are easy to grok. Queen games offers a pack of cards for purchase that have English text along with the icons. We picked those up with the Kickstarter, but I don't know how available or how much they charge for them now. Honestly, why bother printing two sets of cards? They should have just included the English/Icon cards in the game.
The video sound is good. I don't know anything about any of those games, but the Stronghold custom piece find was neat to see. I put a lot of time into making custom Spirit Island pieces to celebrate my joy in that game, and the thought of losing, selling, or giving them away makes me sad. My wife and I have played two games of Castles of Burgundy (after watching your review, and with the pink pieces you sent!) and we enjoy it. She won one, and I won one. More to come.
Thanks for the input! Now I just need to figure out lighting, lol. Making your own "deluxe" version of your favourite games is part of the fun! We're glad to hear you're making good use of the pink pieces. Have you tried Carpe Diem? If you've seen our review of it, you know we both think it scratches the Burgundy itch in a different, yet satisfying way.
@@shelfcontrolgames I'll check out the review. I see your ploy, though: pretty soon, I'll end up with shelves as full as yours are!
If you haven't encountered it yet, there is an app that enables you to play Imperial Assault solo... its called Legends of the Alliance, and there are rules for it that you can freely download as a pdf... you still have to make some decisions for the Empire, but the app handles revealing the map and encounters and all that
Sweet! I'll have to check that out. How do you like it as a solo game?
it works quite well... the app is a bit like Mansions of Madness, if you're familiar with that... you tell it what expansions you have and the app will pick some tiles and enemies based on what you have... you can use the app with more than one person too, you each take one or two heroes... there is also a fan-made app called Imperial Commander that I haven't tried yet
I like the idea of more stuff to do outside of the main box. I'll definitely check those both out. Thanks!
It has nothing to do with Apple. Stop being a hater. Maybe it was it error…and I mean you not me! I was not the user!!
Hmmm...
I got this sold to my shop, didn't ever hear of this till early this month. I appreciate the unboxing showing all the items. I found lots of gameplay but not actual unboxing showing all the bits.
We're glad you found it useful even with the top camera issues! The game is quite the production. We're playing it, and will review soon!
To me it looks they forgot to finish the insert in a proper way.
Yeah. Packing it away the way they told me with the page they provided was not good. Have tried a couple different ways, and haven't found the solution I like yet.
I've only ever hear it pronounced tay-oh-tee-wok-AHN. I hope you get a chance to play and review it for us.
We have a 4 player game planned tomorrow, so I'm going through the rules and we're going to get a 2 player in this evening to prepare for tomorrow. Will need more plays for a review, but it's a start!
Once again, the top camera give us problems with an unboxing video! We're working on a solution for future videos.
Ok but those dice trays are so innovative! More companies need to hop on board and use those for game set up/storage. Imagine wingspan with separate “dice trays” for each food with cohesive designs and whatnot. Then when you’re done, you can unclip and store them with ease. I’m sold 🤷🏻♀️
They've grown on me. I think the issue comes from setting expectations with awesome computer rendered images vs what is actually made.
I think I’m going to get the Cascadia expansion for Kole for Christmas 🤔
Cool! Let us know what he thinks of it!
I don't know what happened to the overhead camera, it was a pain to edit as the end video did not look like what was shown in the editing software. After trying multiple things, we went with this output. Sorry for the weirdness (and the video issue).
Better be watching boys! lol
We'll see if they do.
Nice drink! lol
Thanks! It was a gift! Some nice person gave it to me.
sweet deals!
Indeed. You can see why I was skeptical, they didn't seem real.
00:10: Shelf Control != Abstinence. 😉
If it's not on the shelf, it's fair game!
🥓🥓🥓
Ok, Now I'm craving breakfast...
🥓🥓🥓
I really liked the way you presented the Top 10 update, it creates suspense 😊
Thank you! We agree. We will be thinking on how to improve the presentation before the next update, but we liked having the old list at the beginning as well!
that is some crazy deals m'man. the best i ever found was a sealed Cash N' Guns for $10....
I've had some lucky streaks while hitting the stores lately. Keep looking and you're bound to find some. Do you have McKay's near you?
Kinda wish thrift stores are more of a thing in my country. Here people either just keep stuff or put it up on an online shop, makes it really hard to find any good deals.
It's getting that way with thrift store's here too. With the internet it's easy to search for the value of things in a moment, and price based on that. I think the modern board game space is still relatively new, and so those who aren't familiar with it have a harder time knowing what they have or what it's worth, so some bargains can still be found.
Boop is a fantastic little abstract game! My daughter loves how cute it is and how easy it is to play, but it's strategic enough that it's still fun and interesting for adults.
Good to hear! We still have to table it, but we're looking forward to it. Any game we can play with kids that doesn't put us to sleep is a good thing.
Love these thrift store finds!
Thanks for the kind words! Finding deals like these is almost a game in itself!
