Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group
Великобритания
Добавлен 24 янв 2021
Vernacular architecture is that which is typical for an area or a region. This may be seen in the building materials used, the layout, and the use of rooms. By the end of the nineteenth century improved transport and communications, and changing building techniques, led to less regional variation in new buildings.
Yorkshire has a wide variety of vernacular buildings, from the yeoman-clothier houses of the West Riding, to the field barns of Swaledale and Wensleydale, and the brick farmsteads of the East Riding.
By studying buildings in detail, and using documentary and oral evidence from a variety of sources, the Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group is building up a picture of the different styles of local architecture. The group has recorded over 1900 buildings to date.

A YVBSG Third Thursday Talk by David Cant on Thursday 17 October 2024. The High Street in the old town of Bridlington has been described as one of the best Georgian streets in the UK. A YVBSG Third Thursday Talk by Colum Giles on 19 October 2023. Yorkshire’s medieval aisled houses have been known and recognised by students of vernacular architecture for over half a century. Two main groups have been identified, one in the Vale of York, the other in West Yorkshire, focused on the Halifax area. The relationship between the two groups has, however, not been fully explored, and ...
The Farm That Moved

A YVBSG Third Thursday Talk by David Cant on 21 September 2023. Just south of Mytholmroyd, on the hillside above the Turvin Brook, there is a farmstead with an unusual history. The name, Hollin Hey, suggests an old site, but it isn't shown here on the first edition 25-inch Ordnance Survey map of 1892. David's talk looks at the history of the farm through documents, memories and the buildings th...

A YVBSG 'Third Thursday Talk' by Caroline Stanford of the Landmark Trust on 16 February 2023. Calverley Old House in West Yorkshire was the family seat of the Calverley family from c1150 to 1750, after which it was colonised as cottages and declined in status. Today it presents as a much evolved grouping that contains embedded fabric from its earliest days. Owned since the 1980s by the Landmark...

Looking closely at Windows: what can they tell us?

A YVBSG 'Third Thursday Talk' by Colum Giles on 18 November 2021. To state the obvious, all vernacular houses have windows. But not all windows are the same, they vary in form and style from house to house and within individual houses. Why? What can we deduce from the patterns which we observe and record? This talk takes the vernacular houses of the Calder valley for an examination of the ways ...

A farmer-miner landscape: cowhouses and smallholdings in Castle Bolton
The tithe barn was my first school. I have the old map, my ancestors farmed Gawthorpe, my grandmother lived in spences court. Biggin farm was my ancestors home. Duke Preston a famed character was buried near the iron gates at the graveyard. He fought in the Boer war. Thankyou for the history.
Great talk!
Very enjoyable talk. Particularly interesting due to historical family connection with the area. Thank you. Paul
I have a Hardback DORLING KINDERSLEY DK EYEWITNESS GUIDES Book of MEDIEVAL LIFE. Discover medieval Europe - from life in a country manor to the streets of a developing town.
The music to this was lovely! As I sit here in small town Ontario, Canada with lacy snowflakes falling, I want to come to Barrowford and Yorkshire for tea! I will check out more of your Yorkshire Vernacular buildings which are amazing. The attention to detail and quirkiness in some of the stonework is interesting to me. cheers
Glad you enjoyed it! We do have some wonderful buildings in Yorkshire, although Barrowford is actually just over the county border in Lancashire (which also has amazing buildings). Enjoy your snowflakes - we've just got very wet rain here!
Very good. A nice reminder.
Where are the questions.
I wonder if the garden pavilions/summer houses were used as summer dining rooms, like the roof top room at Hardwick Hall - a gentry-level aspirational equivalent? Either way, completely fascinating, thank you!
This is completely fascinating - thank you!
I suggest the sketch at 50:30 may in fact be a Queen Post Truss - not a box frame building. The uppermost 'King Post' was typically introduced above the straining beam to cope with large span roofs.
Splendid talk; well presented and illustrated
I regret that I had to give up listening before five minutes were up as the concentration required to overcome the very poor sound quality became too draining.
Sorry that you had problems with the sound - I'm afraid we're at the mercy of technology and there's nothing we can do to improve the quality! The sound is actually quite clear on my own laptop, so I'm sorry it was so poor for you.
Brilliant talk! Very much enjoyed this, thank you David.
Thank you!
Very good clear explanation.
Excellent explanation of how to find the YVBSG reports.
