Hi, I'm Phil. I grow orchids in temperate New Zealand. This channel is a series of videos on the culture of orchids that are suited to this climate. Each video is a simple introduction to the orchid group, its main cultural requirements, the key species that are commonly grown, and the main breeding pathways. Cultural aspects include light, heating, growing media, watering, feeding, and pest control.

Do they require any special care to get them to bloom?, I.e. hold fertilizing…. Or do you continue routine care and celebrate when they spike? TYIA for your answer. 😊
I love how your videos are super informative and complete !! Great diagrams and picture presentations. Thank you so much.

Hi, Phil. I really like your videos. I wish you have more current ones - just want to see more of your very informative videos.
A very complete Masdevallia information- from culture, care, types and potting. Finding your channel is very helpful. I really like how you explain the whats, when and why. Thank you very much.
Hi Phil, I could not make out what you said about what causes the spotting on the leaves. Would you mind replying here. Thank you!
What a helpful video. Thank you Phil! I'm just not getting anywhere with my one, but will adjust some things you mentioned and give it another go
If they are a small plant, recently divided, they can take several years to build up strength. Persevere.
@@orchidswithphil412 Awesome! Thank you 😊
Ive had a huge one for 10 years... never flowered once.
Maybe give it more light. Depending on where you are, they will take full sunlight, or light shading
Thank you very much! This was very helpful.
These are such wonderful orchids. I recently purchased two at a Auckland Orchid show and they are proving to be quite resiliant in comparison to some of my collection. Is there any commercial growers in NZ? And where else can these purchased from? Awesome video!
Most of the commercial growers seem to focus elsewhere. I guess shows are the best place, often hobbyists have them for sale. Sorry for late reply
Very insightful Thanks
really helpful information. thank you so much!
Very helpful….mine is growing rough in garden ..hard to separate in order to propagate..wondering if I can place a sharp spade down into soil to break off a big chunk…like I would a clump of agapanthus or similar?
@Orchids with Phil you should keep on making videos, this one about paphs is really helpful and there aren't plenty of them on RUclips. You have a lovely paph collection! :)

Great video Phil! I'm slowly learning about Orchids and I found your video very thorough and helpful :)
Thank you so much for showing the main feature of paphiopedilum and how to grow them. Very helpful. I'am also orchid lover from Papua Indonesia
I have an orchid that has two sets of leaves going from where the 1st stem of its flower do i separate them because it's full fully on the stalk
Thank you so much for these explanations clear and concrete
Hi just found your channel the most informative one I have ever found thank you can't wait for the next one from Queensland
My Dendrobium Speciosum isn't doing good. All the leaves felt off already. What do you suggest to saving it?
Sorry, just saw this. They're really tough, so it's unusual to lose all the leaves. Have you given it high light? & not in frosty conditions? Another possibility is a root problem - eg too much water in the media, from sitting the pot in a saucer or from the media breaking down.
They are so tough here in Perth. I divide mine and even leave them in the sun for a few days till I re pot them, and they still flower profusely!! I have speciousium, and many variations of colours, and they also grow in the garden borders too. Love these hardy plants. Thanks for the video.
thanks for the video. Australian orchids and their hybrids are a very interesting topic.
Good sharing , Thank you.
I'm intending to add more topics next spring, after the main flowering season. Aiming for Oncidinae & Paphiopedilums next
Growers here will grow these next to cymbidiums, and can handle cymbidium extreme temperatures.
Just found this. Thank you for sharing and nice to find a kiwi site.
