Nine Letter Words - 15wpm
For each nine-letter word, try to head-copy it. First, the word is sent in Morse code. Then it is spoken. And finally, it is sent again in More code. If you missed it the first time when it was sent, the second time allows you an opportunity to learn the word. (More speeds below).

    So, here you are, listening to the 45 WPM exchanges and thinking "I'm really cool; I can copy this". Yeah, OK, some of us can, but at our age most of us will be dead or demented in a decade or so, SO ... unless you want to have the CW bands turn into the FT8 bands in a few years, consider slowing down a bit this weekend so we can keep the new CW guys excited. So, here we are at 35 WPM, just about the top speed that makes for comfortable copy by experienced CW operators during Field Day. Above this speed 1/ you're showboating, and 2/ annoying to copy, since we've gotta listen to your callsign 3-5 times before we get it.

    Hi! Are you using this to get ready for Field Day? Then use the recording that is slightly FASTER than you can copy! See you on the air! AND, if you are going to copy the bulletin, it is sent at 18 WPM, so you can use Kurt's 20 WPM (or 22 WPM) recordings to get ready.

      @@KurtZoglmann Hello Kurt, Please consider doing that. How you do this now is a perfect idea: Play the word twice with a pause between, then say what it is, then play the word once more, then have a chirp. Yet if this were to be redone with a slightly larger pause between the first and second pass, that would be even more helpful.

    Great overview! Now I understand why I got to about 30wpm back in the late 80's when I took a break from my hobbies because my career took my time. Now retired, I am trying to get my CW speed back up. I have now maxed out at about the 28wpm you suggest, and trying to move into word recognition. Beyond that, your tips will be quite helpful, I am certain. Thank you once again. --Mark, KE6BB

    Thanks for your videos!! I’ve been hamming for 59 years and have found CW to be my mode of choice!!! I’m getting my speed up just for the fun of it!! I’m pretty good at 30. WPM and have not found a need for faster speed… now I’m enjoying the challenge!! I’m going on 76 years and want to see if my old brain can adjust!! Again, thank you! 73 De NØPL Dit-Dit

      That's fantastic, Paul! I'm rooting for you! I'm delighted you are enjoying the challenge and joy of QRQ! This practice series required some interesting data analysis on my part to locate the most common seven-word phrases (and longer) in the English language that were not political, offensive, etc. I wish you all the best on your Morse Code journey! 73 de AD0WE

    Now here, I can copy about 75% of single letters, still having trouble with full words at even much slower speeds...frustrating

    • @KurtZoglmann
      @KurtZoglmann 10 дней назад

      This is quite understandable and common. With single letters, you have (relatively) a lot of time to process and recognize them compared to copying continuously. The key is to continue to reduce the recognition time down. Recently I have written an article that digs into all of the nitty gritty details. You might find it interesting/relevant - morsecode.ninja#DefiningICRAndBeyond . Don't give it up. It gets easier with practice! Most excellent my friend!.. never doubted your ability..used to think my Late wife was cheating when She did it but, didn't find any cheating ways for Her to do it...oh well..putter below 20 for awhile longer

      Thanks! I'm so sorry to hear about your wife's passing. I'm delighted that she enjoyed the rhythm of the code. Once you start getting into the groove of ICR (Instant Character Recognition) and IWR (Instant Word Recognition), increasing the speed is relatively easy. Going from 20 to 30 wpm is much harder than 30 to 50 wpm. I wish you all the best on your Morse Code journey! 73 de AD0WE dit dit

    I do not want to underestimate your achievements. I want to mention though that I believe there is a difference between understanding and copying. Lots of ham can understand pretty fast Morse code and exchange conversations. But copying means writing down a message. There is some standard. ARRL is a full minute of plain text I believed. In the early days of radio, telegraphist had to not just understand traffic but write it down so the message could be delivered accurately.

      @KurtZoglmann Месяц назад

      Thank you for your comment and for raising this point about the distinction between understanding and copying Morse code. You are correct that traditionally, "copying" referred specifically to transcribing received Morse code, as was done by telegraphists to ensure messages were conveyed accurately. The ARRL (American Radio Relay League) does have standards around this, such as being able to copy one minute of plain text at a certain speed. In more recent years, the term "copying" has evolved in amateur radio circles to be used more broadly as a synonym for being able to understand and decode transmitted Morse code, even if it is not always written down verbatim. Many hams today can rapidly comprehend Morse code by ear without necessarily transcribing it. So while you raise a valid point about the specific origins and meaning of the term "copying" in a Morse code context, the semantics have shifted a bit over time within the ham community. I should have been clearer in my wording. Regardless, I appreciate you highlighting this nuance and I agree it's important to understand the historical distinction. Thank you for adding value to the discussion and helping to ensure clarity around these terms within our community. I wish you all the best on your Morse Code journey! 73 de AD0WE dit dit

      The panadaptor just provides RF out. You'll need a separate SDR (Software Defined Radio) to hook it up to. Most SDRs will need a computer to control the SDR and display the waterfall. 73 de AD0WE dit dit
