True to our nature, Budda and I changed our lives completely. Uprooting from the city we sold our house, left our businesses and networks and moved to 7.2ha in the country. (Rest assured, I will be planting peach trees and gorging on their abundance.)
We've decided to use this digital space to connect with those closest to us in a more exciting and visual way. At the same time, these videos are public and others are welcome to live a little vicariously through our novice attempts to get farming right and to be part of the new future.
My/our biggest learning curve are the sheep. So much to learn I can't even begin.
We also have a 60ish year old stand of Tasmanian Blackwood trees and with Buddas interest in fine carpentry, and recently in milling, tree felling is on the agenda!
My current interest is food sovereignty and not to have to "work" away from the property.
We aim to plant many trees with a focus on natives and a home orchard.
Who knows where this journey will take us!

Over 2.5 years in and this property keeps delivering! This time, one of my all time favorite nuts!

Feeding Out Our Animals When We Have No Grass Left
Просмотров 4118 дней назад
We've started feeding 'bailage' to our animals this year because the lambs that we say goodbye to in this video were too many mouths for our land and we've run out of sufficient grass this winter. By the end of this video all our ewes, calfs, and remaining lambs are in the same paddock to weather the storm and make feeding out easier on us. Plus, this way, we only messed up one side of the prop...
What is this bird??

One Favor Begets Another

With approx 10 mins notice, we rounded the animals up into one paddock so that our neighbor could wiz around with his fert-spreading tractor in exchange for borrowing our tractor for a week to fill their fert truck when their own tractor was out of action. With our poor lamb growth this year, we have been discussing fertilization but haven't had it done... nek minit, all our paddocks have had a...

Sometimes I wonder where all the time goes, and then I remember how here's always so much happening and it's a wonder we get as much done as we do... considering how little experience we have with all this 🤪
Removing a fallen Pine-nut tree. PART 2

The satisfying conclusion to my last video... Budda gets the fence up, and I harvest some pine nuts and plant a couple of germinated ones I find.

Wind creates jobs here on the farmlett. We've tidied this up but have yet to fix the fence.
Starting an orchard

Not sure if I'll call it an orchard or a Curtis Grove... going for orchard for the title as it's self-explanatory.

My 3 heffas... I tried them on grapefruit but they weren't interested - that can remain a sheep treat! These girls love their fresh brassica leaves 😋

We've weaned all our lambs, then suddenly this ewe pops out twins! She may have earned herself a breeding season off because when we next put the ram out, she'll only just be weaning these two and won't have the condition she needs to go straight back into lamb. These two are distinctly different from the rest of the flock, looks like one of the other rams got one away after all! (See "3 rams a...

I managed to get some extra footage as spring marched on. Welcome to the garden, birdies!
Bobbie calfs!

What's a farmlett without some calfs? Time for more 'firsts' and a whole bunch of new learning!
Looks like you have an over stood (neglected) coppice. People would coppice hazel for poles. These poles could be used as is or made into hurdles after splitting. Hazelnuts are ready early autumn, lightly roast to preserve.
@chrisfryer3118 Brilliant, thanks for the tips! I was told yesterday they need some pruning and I plan to look into it. These trees have likely not been tended to in at least 6 years, but probably closer to 10. I'm really keen to give them a new lease on life!
Dem be sum purty nuts ya'll got right there
Why thank you! I love my nuts... it's a shame half of them are hollow 🫠
I've been informed that this is a male Bell Bird 😍
It's probably thinking the same thing 😂😂😂 Whatever it is, I LOVE it! And the tui song ❤
🤣 yes, it probably is! I wonder if it's a native, I'm surprised not to recognize it. I love the sound it makes when it Flys though, it really came across well on the recording I thought 🥰

😂
Awwwwwww so adorable 🥰
Awwww cuties ❤😊
Hallo Kwan bngs sobat mntp slm sukses slalu Kwan
Awesome Love! 😍🌱
nice
Wow, the colour! What bird comes outta there? 🤔🐦
I've been informed by a friend that it is a song thrush! I caught a pic of Mama on the nest, I'll try find a way to share it here somewhere 😀
I Thought It was a Robin-
Love your place
OMG, they are so vocal!... finally got a chance to take this in... thx for sharing... soooooo cute. xox
It's chaos at dusk, all the lambs and ewes trying to pair up for the nighttime feed 🤣 so noisy!!
Absolutely gorgeous hun, so special xxx thanks for sharing 😁😍
So glad you enjoyed this as much as I do ☺️
That’s beautiful 🤩
Ah-mazing Love! From the 'silly cows' to the wee sapling and your one armed bandit planting demo 😂 to the gorgeous kotare at the end... Loved ALL of this! 🎉❤
Thank you, Li 🫶 it was fantastic work to do!
No such thing as mitigation. An atrocity. Standing with you in spirit 2023 Matariki
Oh that is awesome Izzi 😂
Honestly, I couldn't believe it to so much to figure out 😅
What an epic week to have witnessed through film so well recorded ..both as a historical record and as relevant recording of our World today...a documentation of devastation on a small, sacred piece of land in Aotearoa, to the largest devastation across the East Coast, along with Hawkes Bay and other areas of the North Island by Cyclone Gabrielle.... both catastrophes created by the insanity of our Mankind!! Thank you for sharing this.
Uncanny how it all tied together like this eh! Both subjects are so worthy of being recorded.
Those potatoes look beautiful, and I love the art you made. As you said, on your travels you could see the damage caused to land without trees to hold it together and ironically that's exactly what you were off to protest about. Common sense isn't all that common aye! So glad you got home safe. What an adventure. Looking forward to a visit sometime x
Thank you, Casey! I was very excited about the Spuds ... had to share 😆 You're absolutely right about my purpose for leaving in the first place, being to advocate for the saving of our natives! I'll be posting a template letter in the 'we stand with you' FB group (hopefully today) for anyone inclined (but needing a starting point) to write to our ministers about redirecting funds and man power from the Mangapepeke Valley project, to the East Coast disaster relief. We're thinking of you all up there too and hope you're not too poorly affected yourselves 💜💚💙

Truly heartbreaking. Thankyou for shedding light on one of the many destructive things going on.
Brilliant Video 📹 Thank you 😊
Like you, I wish I could do more, we're all doing everything we possibly can against this corruption and I know you are a real trooper for this cause too Kiri 💜🧡💚 onwards we go ✊️
Absolutely onwards we go ain't no turning back now 💚💚💚
Красавчик!🥰
Nawwww soooo cute
Yaya sooo cute
his friend be like: dammit sharon, can you eat like a normal lamb
The lamb was not stuck 🥳 perfectly happy and cheeky!
Do we call Buddha, Elmer Fuddha now? Or just Fuddha ? Haha (Jokes, I know he'll hate that)
Yummy 🌳
Nice one bruva
☕ is 🤎!!!
Love it nice work 👌
Magnificent beard
🤟
That wave ment: "Give us a hand!"
🤢 I thought the only way to get it out might be pliers 🤮 but that was the irrational disgust at play. Budda suggested the vacuume and it was dealt to in seconds. Phew!!
Word has it the size of this delightful produce may be due to the previous burials of our dear Sheepies who passed before their time.
Did you wave at camera with your shadow? 😊
I did 😁
Needs a duck on it to pass for a lake 😊
Funny you should mention that, I cut the video really short but at the start of the full version there were ducks ☺️
next step : a gopro in the trough !!! well done !
Maybe I need a tripod! They don't seem to be afraid of inanimate objects lol
I share your hatred for grapefruit, love the video XD
Nice job!
🍊🍋🐑🐑🎉
One of those sheep seems to be a pig nom nom nom :D
I know!! What I didn't get on camera was when she was head butting the others away. Then, when she'd finished licking up all the juices and left, turns out she was just a really fat lamb! Still had a tail n everything!!! I thought for sure she was a mama!
Yeah, your stalking skills are of the worst Big Wolf variety haha. They are programmed to sense for movement for survival. The land there is beautiful.
Yeah, I think I need one of those spy cameras people put in their children's bedrooms. Then we'll all have visual and audio hahahaha They're SO happy when they finally discover the fruit 🥰
Build a cairn! Good workout there with those rocks. Won't be long before you're putting that compost around the trees
Congratulations on the move. The countryside looks beautiful. Budda's a great driver lol :)
