Barley mulch, a natural way to make your garden more fertile?
In this video, filmed in late November 2024, I sow barley into the garden to help maintain the soil. I also discuss how I hope to use it next year to serve as compost and mulch, cutting costs and potentially serving as a food crop. All that from a simple and easy plant to grow!! Happy New Year!
Potential Benefits of Barley Straw
- Reduces soil compaction, allowing for better root development.
- Improves soil fertility by adding organic matter as it decomposes.
- Attracts beneficial insects and worms that help control pests.

Wanna try growing Grain? Here's a way! Planting Oats
Viewing this again - I plan to plant grapes soon.
I was unsubscribed for some reason.
This is a great idea. I will definitely try this!
Garlic is my main ingredient for all my dishes.
There is nothing like fresh garlic! Is it too late to plant now?
No it's not, just plant it if you are in a warm zone! Cheers
I am going to have to build a worm bin as well.
I have a lot of compost scraps and this will be ideal to have! I will look into this for sure, thanks for the info!
Thanks for the support, good luck with yours!
Congratulations on reaching 100 subscribers!
Thank you so much! All the best to you as well!
You have inspired me to plant for sure. My winter garden as come in handy this season. I did not have to buy one bunch of greens! I had more than enough to cook for Thanksgiving and new years dinner!
Wonderful!
Keeping all options open is wise I believe! Great info for sure.🍇🍓🍅
So Nice Vlog 💕💕❤❤
Thank you 😊
Just found your channel- great video! Here in the UK, I've planted two cider/hard cider apple trees and a few eating apple trees. Really looking forward to making juice and cider. 👍🍎
Good luck, cheers! I love apple trees
Cute dog too!
Thanks!
The greens look good! Tomatoes - wow.. 😀
Thanks, I dont get to take credit for that because the plants found their ideal conditions!
Is it possible to do short videos on diagnosing plant problems in small segments or sessions over the course of time for each diseases or problems using your resources?
thanks for the suggestion, yes I can include next season!
Peaches are the best and easiest to maintain. Well once you fix the curly leaf issues.
This is great information. I am having a lot of issues with sweet potatoes worms eating the leaves of the plants. I will make use of this info! 👍
Congratulations on your Golden Nugget Tangerine producing fruit! We bought an Owari Satsuma last year. Can’t wait till ours start producing fruit 😋
Great video! Thank you for sharing how you make wine. Love how you not only reminded us but showed us another way we can offset some of our costs, be more independent and resilient 😀
I love that wine! It's so good!!! Especially good with seafood in your experience.
How many blocks are people using in the press? The turning handle hits the top of my press before the apples are crushed!!
Hi, I added about 8 blocks to what came with my press to help my press work better.
I am going to put the lighter color mulch around my lime three to see if it will help.
Could it have been the variety of the tree as to why it didn't do well in that area? Oh well - Tangerine should be a great replacement!
It'll be great to have the fruit in spring!
Those peppers look good! Love Avocados - especially home grown. Keep up the good work with informing us on your journey with Gardening.
Thank you! Will do!
I just bought a shredder that goes over the top of the press from amazon. I think it’s worth the money if you have a lot of apples every year
If you get a chance please give the name of the shredder in the comments!
I love Apple Cider! Very interesting info.
Hello mr. Apple 🍎 I'm very enjoying with you backyard and you garden it's beautiful you have a lot of apples trees so enjoying with you video. thanks for sharing you experience .😊😊😊
Thanks glad you enjoyed!!! I think braeburn is my favorite apple variety right now ;)
I would love a video on seedling apples , I have one in a pot but not sure what is the correct sizes as they grow.
Hi, you can also find some good info on the UC Backyard Orchard page: homeorchard.ucanr.edu/The_Big_Picture/ they cover most aspects start to finish for tree care. If it works out i'll try to address this in the spring in a video specifically for apples. Thanks!
Have you tried spraying SurroundWP on your grapes?
Thank you thank you thank you! Yes I'm most likely gonna try it next spring.
@@NewVictoryGardening Dont spray please, they will be ok next year. It is why it was bad this year. Insects and plants are sharing every year, people just dont understand it. Thank you.
Good stuff 😊😊😊
Thanks 😁
Looking good 😊😊😊
Thank you 😊
11:00 Looks like it might be some kind of greenhouse whitefly insect - very difficult to get rid of once they have multiplied, I have seen people go at them with a vacuum to get the bulk of them, and then use an organic oil spray. A trap crop might help draw them away from the grapes - like growing some nasturtium around the area
@nebsun, yes I plan to go into more depth in an upcoming video. My goal is to get options on the table for all to consider. I've had quite a time dealing with these insects, most challenging yet...
There are some apple varieties paired with rootstocks that are very hardy in hot and cold climate and disease resistant, like a Liberty apple on MM116
See the trees you could have, in my video about "pruning" trees but in french, I'm in south east Spain, 200 various fruit trees, and 4 varieties of apple trees, so I harvest apple from May to December. Here we have around one week per year of freeze in early morning only, around 0 degrees celcius
Great thanks! South East Spain; Cool!
@@NewVictoryGardening Seems we have the same climate, so try olive trees too !
I didn't watch the whole video but I'm definitely planting apple trees when I get a home because they produce a lot of calories per square foot once established and taste good.
Too many fruit drops and wasps, bees, etc. lots of work to pick up the fallen fruit unless you keep the tree small
Not a problem if youre gonna use all the fruit I like my trees huge And shady
I'm definitely planting a Gala Apple and grapes next. Thanks for the info.
Being drought tolerant is very important to CA. Thanks for sharing your information.
Thanks😁
Apple trees are often said to grow in zones 3-8. I live in zone 10 southern california. We get about 16 inches of rain a year. Despite this apple trees really thrive and often produce thousands of apples per tree per year, and reliably annual, I've never seen a biennial apple tree
First time visiting..will be back sir
Thanks so much it's great to have you. Had a family issue come up but I'll post a new video soon. Happy gardening!
Great story and info! Those berries look so yummy. ❤
Nice calla lilies! Nice everything! Been edging on 100 here- but we have big trees.
Yes, I agree trees make a big difference. I need to get some new shade cloths also :).
Love those gladiolas!
Great idea! I'd like to try barley.
Hi Teas.Louise, I just ordered a hull-less Barley called "streaker" and will try it out either in the fall or spring!
@@NewVictoryGardening Thank you! Noting that variety down.
Very impressive, stay connected! thumb here
Thank You!!
I really like steel cut oats! I like the plant it looks like ornamental grass in a way.
Thanks; I like them too, it takes more work to thresh and winnow them than to grow them!
It's really producing well!
Thanks!
Great information! We need to get some mulch on some of our raised beds as well. It’s hot here in Tennessee too 😅
Good Luck its already a challenging year!
It seems that mulch cuts down the weeds. I like the wood much better than rock. Great information.
Thanks 👍
If it don't grow, it gotta go! Love your resilience and positivity. Great video!
Nice!
