Top 10 Worst Calls In MLB History

My very subjective, unbiased opinion of the top 10 worst calls of all time. Measuring these took a combination of how bad the call was along with the leverage of the situation.

You can add the umps calling the Guardians foul ball a home run against the Royals - even after the replay showed a close up of the ball disappearing behind the foul pole without changing its trajectory at all, making it physically impossible for it to have been a home run... both announcers, both teams, were saying "I can't believe they called that a home run" - the batter was going back to the plate when the ump told him it was a home run.

How can an Umpire make a mistake like at 4:26 ?? That's crazy, and hopefully investigated. That should have been his last game ever in MLB.

The play was actually a lot closer than most people think, upon closer inspection you can see that the catcher's swipe tag at *most* BARELY made contact with him, so it was actually a lot harder to call than you'd think

@@NickTheFlasque Rarely have I been so rightfully rebutted (at least rarely in my mind). Upon further inspection of my own 4:26 post, that play was actually unable to be reversed based on that angle alone.

This goes to show that mlb has a beef with the Braves 3/10 on this list went against the Braves in crucial playoff moments(cardinals in wild card, livan’s moon sized strike zone in the nlcs, and the leg pull vs the twins was in the series ffs) and the one that went for the Braves was just a game I think in like July like a freaking mid season game

Those close plays with the pitcher covering first are very tough, and probably blown more than any other kind of call. The pitcher 's feet are moving so much slower than the batter-runner's feet, it can give the illusion that the batter got there first. Then the ump has to listen for the ball hitting the glove, but it's traveling slowly and doesn't make a loud noise, and the fans are yelling because the play is close. In the st Louis game, the pitcher stepped on the bag awkwardly, and his foot came off a split second after he caught the ball....a lot of things to keep track of....all at once. Without slo-mo, it's really tough. I see local semi-pro umps blow this call all the time.

There's a difference between calls that aren't even close vs calls that impacted the result of a game

4:26 The only logical explanation for that umpire’s terrible safe call at home was because of the fact that the game went 19 innings and the home plate umpire had no desire to take the game to 20 innings which is why he did so as an excuse to end the game. He probably felt very tired and wanted the game to be over.

4:28 The Atlanta/Pittsburgh one, if I remember correctly, was called safe at home plate because the catcher swiped upward but didn't actually tag the runner. At least I recall that being the argument and that on replay it did look close. Hard to tell since the vid doesn't show that replay.
