Cello Banjo Strings Review
Here's my initial reaction to Gold Tone's cello banjo strings on one of my baritone gourd banjos. TL;DR, great volume and sustain, very even across all the strings, but they are a little brighter and noisier than I like. Time may prove to mellow them, or they might not be exactly what I'm looking for when using an unfretted neck. Give some of my other gourd banjo videos a listen and then you be the judge. Here's one: ruclips.net/video/XO1pHwnKnoA/видео.html

Handscrew Instead of Bench Vise
Просмотров 131Месяц назад
Having a bench with no vise is not a hindrance, indeed in many ways it's superior to the alternative. Bulky vises can get in the way of other work, limit the bench's flexibility, and quality ones are quite expensive. Some benefits of this method over a vise: 1. The work can be fully supported by the bench. 2. Odd-shaped work pieces can be held tightly. 3. Further support methods such as added h...

Ten Oldtime Banjo Tunings in Two Minutes

Here are ten tunings that I play in. I'm sure I left out many of them so let me know which ones you like and what tunes you play in them.
Mole in the Ground
Просмотров 2275 месяцев назад
It's good, and also fun to play tunes in different tunings from time to time. I typically play Mole in the ground (aka Tempe Roll Down Your Bangs, aka Lizard in the Spring) in gCGCD, but here it's in eCGCE, giving it a much warmer and sparkly vibe, and allowing for some more dissonant chords. What tunes do you play in more than one tuning?

    why is the neck so big?

    • @LowlyMountainBanjos
      @LowlyMountainBanjos 4 дня назад

      The neck doesn’t have a cut out above the short string like modern banjos and it uses much thicker strings.

      @@LowlyMountainBanjos Could you share some details on your recording setup? I've recently figured out how to play Glory bound based on your video (one of my favorites) and I just can't get my recordings to sound any good. My phone peaks and sounds terrible and my desktop microphone (a pretty high-end dynamic xlr mic) just doesn't do instruments any justice. I think you mentioned in another video you use a lapel mic, if so could you share what one specifically? Cheers!

    • @LowlyMountainBanjos
      @LowlyMountainBanjos 3 дня назад

      Mics matter less than technique. I’m formally trained in audio engineering so these recordings are a combination of mics, placement, and post-production. My current setup is a pair of DJI lapel recorders. I put them in different places depending on the banjo. Here I have one under my shirt below my chin, and one clipped to the soundhole of the banjo. To avoid the kind of distortion you mentioned the input levels need to be set properly. Afterwards I bring the audio into an editor and mix it so that it accurately represents the sound of the instrument in person, while adhering to industry standards for publishing.

      It’s a custom order so already sold. I’m currently only taking custom orders with the occasional luthier’s stock posted to my website. I’ll also post all of those to my RUclips channel a full two days before anywhere else so keep an eye out for that. I’m trying to get a very special mountain banjo up before Thanksgiving.

    Cool banjo! Love this tune. It’s got that cyclical character that I’ve come to associate with the early black banjo repertoire. Once you’re playing them, the challenge is stopping-like getting off those merry-go-rounds they used to have in the parks.

    I use hands crews as a vice like that all the time. What I find really great about them is that you can chop notches into the faces to better hang onto parts. You can even make replaceable jaw faces for different applications. I have holes drilled in some of mine for screwing them right to the bench top. They are just so economical relative to their versatility.

    hi i built my first gourd banjo because of this video and this guitar. i finished the guitar today but now i don't know how to tune it or what strings to use . i thought i would find it online but cant find any thing on the low tuning. you cant buy baritone strings in new Zealand so i bought two packets of classical nylon strings. could you please tell me which string to use out of my two classical string packets and where they go how to tune them please ? my next order of business once strung was to learn this song and your other song on baritone about the lonely wife waiting 7 years.

    • @LowlyMountainBanjos
      @LowlyMountainBanjos Месяц назад

      That’s wonderful to hear. You can use the lowest four strings from the classical guitar set for the full-length strings and the high E string as the short string. Tune them a full octave below standard banjo tuning. I’d love to hear it when you’re done.
