On August 26, 1973, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) contracted with Electro-Motive Diesel to assemble a fleet of GP40 passenger diesels, called GP40MCs, to pull and push trains on their commuter passenger railroad services around the Greater Boston downtown area. The “GP” meant General Purpose, “40” meant the 40th series of locomotives built by EMD and the “MC” stood for Microprocessor Cummins. A total of 25 units were ordered, numbered 1115-1139. The locomotives are powered by a EMD 645E3 four-stroke water-cooled V16-cylinder diesel engine, generating 3,000 hp (2,240 kW). The EMD GP40 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive. It has a EMD 16-645E3 prime mover. Its power output is 3,000 hp (2.24 MW). These 25 MBTA units are just an extremely small portion of the more than 1,000 units built for various U.S. railroads across North America between November 1965 and December 1975. The GP40 is 3 feet (0.914 m) longer than its EMD 567D3A-engined predecessor, the GP35 and distinguished visually by its three 48-inch radiator fans at the rear of the long hood. The GP40 was used as the basis for passenger locomotives, which were often rebuilt from older freight locomotives. These passenger locomotives required extra components to provide power for heating, air conditioning, lighting and electricity in the passenger cars. The first of the new units was delivered to MBTA on June 17, 1974 and entered service on September 5th of the same year and by that date, three units were either close to completion or already completed. By May 1, 1975, all locomotives had been delivered and had entered service by July 11, 1975. The locomotives were rebuilt by AMF in 1997-98. In 2007-08, the locomotives underwent top deck overhauls by Norfolk Southern Railway off property. In 2008, when the units completed their top deck overhauls, they were 33 years old and past the manufacturer’s recommended lifespan of 25 years for a diesel-electric passenger locomotive in the U.S. and overdue for replacement. In 2005, the MBTA began issuing requests for proposals for new diesel locomotives to replace the existing fleet much of which dated to the 1970s. Two firms responded to the call: MotivePower, Inc. and Vossloh AG. On November 28, 2008, the MBTA awarded a $137.5 million contract to Vossloh AG for 40 new locomotives, with delivery scheduled between December 2011 and June 2013. The German-based rail technology diesel passenger locomotive manufacturer located in Werdohl in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. AG is Aktiengesellschaft. However, in June 2009, the MBTA announced that Vossloh didn’t meet their needs for a modern, fuel-efficient and low-emissions vehicle for their customers and the T cancelled the order, with the T never going back to Vossloh again. On July 23, 2009, the T again started the process of receiving bids for new locomotives and on September 3rd of that year, the T announced that they finally moved toward an Environmentally-Cleaner Commuter Rail Fleet. In early 2010, the MBTA was finally gearing up to purchase locomotives and the long-delayed procurement was vital in getting the thousands of passengers who rely on the trains to get them where they want to go safe and efficiently every day. In August of 2010, the Authority awarded a contract to MotivePower for the procurement of 40 New Diesel-Electric Passenger Locomotives. The HSP46 order replaced a vast majority of the GP40MCs by October 2015, but a handful remain in service. The units have been rebuilt in-house or in Rochester since 2019 and the repairs/overhauls are still ongoing. Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) is a Worldwide Diesel Passenger Locomotive Manufacturer that provides diesel-electric locomotives and diesel engines for the rail transport industry. The undercarriages, wheel chassis, the rest of the bottom and prime movers of the engines were built in McCook, Illinois, USA and final assembly took place in Muncie, Indiana, USA. This included building on the bottom and installing the cab area, doors, railings/hand rails, turbochargers, moving parts for the engines including pistons and water cooler, gears, rubber band, air compressors, traction equipment, main generator and HEP equipment, windows, roof, ceiling fans, bells, lights, electrical and wiring components, diesel engines, computer systems, radiator cooling fans and other important components. Progress Rail is the 2010 parent. As of 2008, EMD employed 3,260 people. Founder was Harold L. Hamilton Paul Turner. Headquarters is La Grange, Illinois, United States. It was founded on August 31, 1922 in Cleveland Ohio, US. Company type is Private (1922-30) Subsidiary/brand (1930-present). It was formerly Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation (1922) Electro-Motive Company (1922-30) Electro-Motive Division (1941-2004). In 2005, GM sold EMD to Greenbriar Equity Group and Berkshire Partners and in 2010, EMD was sold to Progress Rail, a subsidiary of the American heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar. Upon the 2005 sale, the company was renamed to Electro-Motive Diesel. After purchase by GM, the company was known as GM’s Electro-Motive Division. EMD traces its roots to the Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation, founded in 1922 and purchased by General Motors in 1930.
