250の84年最終戦のムジェロは福田照男にとって悪夢のレースだった。これまで83年からずっとHHシリンダーの高圧縮ピストンエンジンの始動性の悪さをやっと克服して好スタートを切ってトップグループを走れるチャンス！と思ったら「後ろから"ハラルドエックル核弾頭"に体当たり」を食らってリタイヤだけではなく、翌シーズン「フレディと同じマシンで250をフルシーズン参戦のチャンス」もこのクラッシュの大腿骨、背骨の圧迫骨折で終わってしまった。 復帰できる体調に回復した時にはすでにホンダファクトリー250のシートは無く、失意の内に引退を決意。 82年に全日本250でタイトルを獲得。 翌83シーズンから自費でWGP250に参戦。 当時の250は前年に350がなくなった影響で"中量級のキチガイみたいに速いファイターが全員250に引越し参戦"が始まった時で「シルバーストーンの最終コーナーはカルロス・ラバード、ピエール・ボール、アルフォンソ・ポンス、クリスチャン・サロン、福田照男、ジャン・ルイ・トルナード、ディデイエ・ド・ラディゲス…その他にも強豪が10台以上ひしめき合って車体をぶつけて暴れながら全開で抜けて行く…なんていうのが見られたのが83年の250でした。 当時のファンなら良く知っていると思いますが、明らかに"日本人ライダーと世界の差"が声高に叫ばれた時代だったので、そんな時代に前後輪がスベるのは当たり前で、その状態でも隣にライバルがいれば絶対負けないとばかりに全開。 そんな"キレイじゃないけど速くて強い走り"ができる数少ない日本人ライダーが福田照男だったように思います。 福田照男の夢が散った後は86年最終戦サンマリノで平忠彦の優勝があるのみで、93年開幕戦のイースタンクリークでの原田哲也の優勝からシーズン通じてトップグループで戦い続けてタイトルを獲得〜日本人ライダーの黄金時代が来るまでは「日本人ライダーにとって世界タイトルは夢のまた夢」というのが一ファンの自分としては正直な感想でした。 短かったけど本気の夢を魅せてくれたライダーが福田照男だったと思います。

What a wonderful flowing race track this was before they tacked that horrible hairpin and dog-leg section on at the 1st corner! Circuit also works better with the s bend before the finish rather than the tight chicane. Fuck F1!
