In the kitchen: Spiced Carrot Cake
This time in the kitchen I will be grabbing some carrots from the garden to make Spiced carrot Cake. It's one of my favourite things to bake, and a bit more satisfying now that I can use carrots from the garden to make it.
Spiced Carrot Spice Cake
Ingredients:
4 1/2 Cups Flour (762g)
2 1/2 Cups Brown Sugar (528g)
1/2 Cup White Sugar (100g)
1 Tbsp Baking Soda
1 Tbsp Cinnamon
1/2 Tbsp Ground Cloves
1/2 Tbsp Salt
1/2 Tbsp Nutmeg
3 Cups 2% Milk
3 Tbsp White vinegar
1 1/2 Cups Canola Oil
6 Tbsp Spiced Rum (90ml)
1 Tbsp Vanilla
3 Cups Grated Carrots (About 3 medium carrots)

So after some research, and some pinching and zooming into my own video, I discovered I was wrong about the bug infestation i had in early July. They were not aphids after all. Heavy rains last night but very little damage. Everything is doing well (some plants might be doing TOO well 😄). I started adding the mulch to the pathways between the beds. I think it really changes the look and feel of the garden. Also started planning and making decisions about next years garden. Crazy 3 days. Black Aphids destroyed a couple of my crops in the garden, and they move fast. From a few bugs on a couple plants, to a whole row of crops destroyed in two separate raised beds. All over the course of three days! Going to apply a Neem oil solution to the other crops in hopes of keeping the aphids under control. #vegetablegarden #aphids #pakchoy #bokchoy #choysum #neemoil

It's been a crazy few weeks. We finally got the raised beds built and put into place. Normally I would like to keep the seedlings on the grow shlef longer, so that they are bigger before I put them outside. OK……I don’t think those were black aphids 😅. I think the culprit was Flea Beetles.Apparently they only like very young plants. But they live in the soil, so they will probably come back next year. Will you need to add some vapor barrier to the shelf to keep in moisture since you are in a bigger space that might absorb more moisture than your last room.
No need. The humidity domes on the seedling trays trap all the moisture needed during germination.

Sweet workshop Craig! Would love to hear your thoughts on this: I have a lot of containers I use to garden. It's difficult to swap out all the soil each season. Last year some of my tomats had some kind of blight. I want to re-use the soil but I'm concerned the seedlings will get infected. I read about using hydrogen peroxide for sterilizing the soil.
Hey Dan...I have heard of sterilizing with peroxide (or boiling water for that matter), but I'm not so sure of doing that in soil that you know for sure had sick plants in it. You might be better off just getting rid of that soil and just starting from new. May I humbly suggest the Lettuce Mix listed above....LOL 😆

Do you turn on the lights during low cost power times of the day? will it confuse the plants if it's 12 hrs offset from the sun?
I have mine on from 5am-5pm not following the low or high peak times. But yes you could run them only the low and medium hydro times and it should be fine. As long as they get their 12 hours of light.
