North Tyneside Steam Railway - Bagnall 401 'Vulcan' Returns
401 was one of three locomotives built by W.G Bagnall in 1950 for the Steel Company of Wales to compete with modern diesel technology. As a result, they were fitted with self-cleaning smokeboxes, rocking grates, hopper ash pans, roller bearings and Walschaerts valve gear. Arguably, they were the most technologically advanced industrial steam locomotives ever built. Whilst working at SCOW’s Port Talbot and Margam steelworks, the trip were found to be capable of hauling much heavier trains than expected, with very little maintenance. Eventually, as diesel traction improved, they were replaced by more efficient diesel shunters and 401 and 403 were sold to the Austin Motor Company in 1957.
