This is a video trip report of our hike of Colorado 14er Pyramid Peak (14,029') on Monday July 29th, 2024.
The hike was roughly 8.25 miles with 4,500' of elevation gain taking place near Aspen, Colorado in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness.
This video is shot on my I Phone, yet it does showcase the route and terrain pretty well. I hiked Pyramid Peak with my buddy Dom, who has been in many of my past videos. You can find his RUclips channel @thedomroute
This 14er hike requires a permit which you can obtain online ahead of time at

That sloped rock section a few miles in scared the hell out of me on my ascent out of that canyon. No one should try that imo unless they have experience.
Spectacular ~ thank you for taking us there! Looks like ruins, scattered bricks everywhere 🤩
Thanks for watching! It really was a tower of Legos.
One of the best 14er videos I have seen, thank you! What kind of vehicle did you drive to the trailhead?
@@TS-mo6pn Thanks for the support! I drove a Mercury Mountaineer to the trailhead.
looks like a pretty tough climb wow! awesome views all day thanks for taking us with you
It was tough on the feet for sure! Glad to have Dom with me to assist with morale and route finding. We returned to this basin 2 days ago and climbed Mt. Wilson. Video coming soon for that as well! Thanks as always for checking it out potatothorn! You are the OG The Way Outdoors (HikeWithMike) supporter!
@@TheWayOutdoors haha thanks
Thanks Mike. That’s was way sketch. Glad for the helmets😅. I still think it’s amazing you can hike to that peak at 14+k and be back the same day. Amazing. And Dom is a character. Always looking forward to the next one 👍
Thanks for the support! New video coming soon as we return to the talus/scree for the summit of Mt. Wilson. Dom is back with me as well. Plenty of shenanigans. Cheers!
Looks like a great hike. A little sketchy at times
@@marinapantilus1756 The route was pretty solid the majority of the time, yet I agree attention was needed on the tricky terrain. Thanks for watching!
What was your total mileage from start to finish?
Unfortunately I do not have the exact mileage due to my Fitbit dying and not tracking it. I do remember talking about 60-70ish miles in total. We did float the river for a few miles as well. Top 3 trip of my lifetime for sure!
@@TheWayOutdoors Awesome! Do you remember how long it took to float from Gypsum to Bowdie and then Bodie to Dark?
This is an area I need to explore. Thanks for the video.
@@WanderlustAdventureCompany There is much to explore in the area for sure. Thanks for checking out the channel!
Great video! I miss your backpacking videos. Looking forward to the next one
@@marinapantilus1756 I’ve had a couple life changes recently which has held up backpacking, yet there will be more in the future! Thanks for checking out the video.
Budos
I live in Colorado also. Just beautiful!
It really is! Thanks for watching Gary!
Always enjoy your hike Mike! Thanks this was incredibly beautiful 🤯
Glad you enjoyed it! I have 2 more videos coming out soon, and an epic backpacking trip planned 2 weeks from now. Thanks for the support!
@@TheWayOutdoors looking forward to them 🙌
is it just me or does 3 beers seem excessive? not saying you have a drinking problem or anything, but from a hiking perspective, A thats alot of weight, B alcohol is a poison, i cant imagine that it helps your body. i know that beer does help with hydration, but thats easily outweighed by other cons. just curious, your not the only one i see doing this. I would enjoy A beer at summit, but 3 seems like alot.
@@mtnbound2764 Hey, thanks for the comment. I do not usually drink 3 beers on my hikes but on this day it just felt right! 😜 This was a very long hike but I stayed hydrated with plenty of water and great craft beer!
@@TheWayOutdoors sounds good!
which app was that that you showed using the elevation slider? lately ive been using cotrex
That was the All Trails app. It does give a good look on the overall topo map of the route. Although sometimes the mileage and other stats can be a bit off.
Hey man, your videos have been greatly informative for an upcoming trip I have soon. Curious, where was the trailhead you used for this hike?
@@codymitchh Hey Cody, thanks for checking out the channel! It seems like I somehow edited out the clip where I mentioned the trailhead. I started this hike right at the top of Hoosier Pass in between Alma and Breckenridge. If you have any other questions regarding the hike let me know. Safe trails!
@@TheWayOutdoors right on! Thanks. I saw some posts that folks were starting around Scott Gulch as well but I like the route you took. Anyway, cheers!
Awesome you got the summit to yourself/ lake looks like a prefect beer spot that's great/ fantastic hike, so many great views and beautiful forest scenes thanks for taking us with you
Awesome hike/ non stop amazing scenery thanks for sharing

@@TheWayOutdoors well maybe the first one with a keyboard/ phone people rarely leave comments but they are out there/ im still on a real computer
What knee brace did you use please thank you
Just a Velcro Ace brand bandage. It does need to be re-adjusted from time to time but helps out overall for sure.
Nice video. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks for sharing. I live in upstate NY and I find the desert Southwest beautiful and fascinating. Congratulations on your marriage and I hope you can continue some of your Colorado Trail videos. I was enjoying taking the trip "with you".
Holy crap. I remember that cabin in Mojave!
Yup we still have it! Such a peaceful place to visit. Thanks for checking out the video Rick, and I hope all is well. I see you’ve been getting out doing some camping as well.
Good to see you uploading again Mike. A few CO outdoor vloggers I follow have moved to the western slope recently (Karl Decker, Centennial Treks). Closer access to Utah and San Juans is definitely enticing. Looking forward to more content
I believe that is a momma turkey distracting you from her babies common bird behavior I see it a lot with Bob white quail mommies in the Florida Savannah areas this is a beautiful place you are hiking it is not the typical landscape think of for Colorado
Great info, thanks Mike! Are you aware my channel used to be called “Hike With Mike” as well.😂 There were so many accounts with that name I changed it to The Way Outdoors. There’s a lot of us Mikes out there for sure. Thanks for checking out the video!
Ouch Joes backpack looks super heavy!
We did have a cast Iron Pan, and all the fixings for pizza as well, yet it does look like a mighty pack!
Nice scenery, but too much commentary for my tastes. Always wanted to hike the area, but closest I got was Yellowstone.
Sorry to hear that, yet I do appreciate the honest feedback! I don't want to be another hiking channel with generic music.
Great video and views. Got as for as Herman Lake in 2013, but started late and could not finish. You have a good grasp of identifying nearby peaks. Wonder if you could see Mount of Holy Cross from there. It is visible from Squaretop Mountain above Guanella Pass with clear visibility. About 40 miles west-southwest.
Thanks for checking out the video Mark. If you were able to see Holy Cross, it would probably be around 13:34 yet there is some haze making it difficult. Check out my Square Top video as well ruclips.net/video/thkc3VeWCV8/видео.htmlsi=fx48sU5FmKniCDPp
@@TheWayOutdoors Thanks!
Awesome, awesome camera work and editing! 😎
Thank you so much! This trip still might be my favorite of all time. It was a lot of work, and tons of extra credit for the camera shots, but I love doing it. Thanks for checking it out!
i love that there’s no music
Thanks so much. I took a risk going for a format with no music yet I enjoy the sounds of the hike, all the fun comradery, and narration as the hike happens. I appreciate the support!
Thats one hell of a crew you got there. Goofy af and i am laughing my ass off man. Crappy you had to turn around but you guys definitely made the best of it.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! We definitely had fun despite the unfavorable conditions. It did lead for some cool shots and a reason to go back in the future. Thanks for checking out the video, I have more trips coming soon!
Arches National Park is insanely busy, almost not worth going there anymore. I've done the easy trail out to Double O arch, I would like to do the primitive trail someday. You might like the Fiery Furnace hike. I've hiked to Angel Arch but personally I like Double Arch the best. I was in Utah many years ago in the San Rafael Swell area. I got rained on and snowed on for several days so I gave up and drove south to Cedar Mesa area where it was dry, sounds like the opposite of what you expected and you had snow everywhere. IIRC Cave Tower Ruins are located on another section of Mule Canyon.
You are indeed correct it was busy, even with the rain/snow! Delicate Arch was beautiful despite being crowded as the morning sun provided some beautiful colors before the clouds came in. It would have been a fun experience heading down into The Grand Gulch, yet I will return someday soon. All of Southern Utah is truly captivating and it seems you understand its beauty as well. Thanks for checking out the videos, and safe trails Bill!
I backpacked down Swett 30 years ago and got stopped by that dropoff at 21:50 in the video. I was by myself and didn't want to risk going down the dropoff and then having to climb back up it the next day so I turned around and went back.
It was a fun hike, with us seeing only 1 other person over the 3 days. I can imagine that drop off being a problem hiking solo, especially if there was more water. I still need to get out to Leprechaun and more of the surrounding canyons.
Nice weather for it. Enjoyed watching.✌️
It was a beautiful Fall day. Thanks for checking out the video!
I don't know how you don't have more subs man. Your videos are awesome. Found you when I was researching dark canyon wilderness. That trip was epic. Like seeing these day hikes too. Cheers.
Thank you very much! That Dark Canyon Trip still haunts my dreams, truly an unforgettable experience, and still my favorite trip of all time! These day hikes are fun, and I feel even though they don't get as many views, hopefully the videos give some insight to those wanting to try out the hikes themselves. I have some great backpack trips in mind or this year, so stay tuned!
Too bad you choked on Bowdie...there's a route up and you missed it as it's easier to find coming down canyon. Bowdie is a fantastic canyon and the there is one significant area you have to climb way up on ledges to get back into the stream bed...stay right if going upstream. Eventually you'll come to a pour off that takes two people to get up, one providing a boost...not for solo hikers coming upstream. Once past the "Village", there's an exit canyon right to get up top then it's over to Lean-To Canyon down to Dark and the Sundance trail. I know that entire area like the back of my hand...been hiking, backpacking and truck camping there for 35 years. About as remote as you can get in the lower 48. Yeah, Gypsum is no joke. Congratulations...you guys did good. Too bad about Bowdie, though...perhaps you can go back and come in from the top. The very upper section is a bit boring, but where the two arms split, downstream from that it's great.
Love your adventures and you beer advocacy
Hey thanks Carol. Every hike should be rewarded with a beer or two! Thanks for checking out the channel!
Such a great place to explore. Enjoyed watching your awesome video my friend! Atmosphere is so captivating 🥾🥾

Awesome video! I want to know more about the spiced coffee recipe in the beginning.
Thanks for checking out the video! My buddy Jamie is the mastermind behind that coffee creation. Some neurotropic, mushrooms, Ghee, and great Chai-esque spices.
Love your videos...love Utah! Loved the moody weather and how it accents and lights up the landscape!
I was in the Needles backpacking taking a group out for their first trip a week before. It was ***cold***. This probably was the right call! Its been such a weird season
I agree Tuzi! It would have been fun being down in the canyon with less people, but the lack of sunshine and the rain/snow that I experienced would have been exponentially worse down in the Grand Gulch. Thanks for watching, and supporting the channel for over 3 years! I already have another video in the works. Safe Trails!
