Bike check: A GT Aggressor Pro a neighbor was giving away for free

In this video, I talk about the latest bike I got from someone in the neighborhood, a GT Aggressor Pro circa 2017. I go over the bike as it is very stock and in future videos, I'll be riding the bike stock and gradually making upgrades to see if we can improve the bike over time.

    Late 1990s I had a magnificent blue lts 3 as my first full sus, but I had to give it back to the shop owner then I got a proflex 856 and in 1999 a used trek Y-22. I did take it on a few double black diamond trails: Search on RUclips "Raging River Invictus" and "Tiger Mountain Predator Trail" and it can handle those trails but not as well as my 2022 GT LTS high pivot model Force. Climbing - It's a great, great, great bike with just a wheel swap from the stock alloys to carbon. XC races - I race Cat 2 here in WA state, currently 6th overall out of over 40 riders and I owe it to that bike. It has similar times to my hardtail but technical trails, this bike shines. Jump lines. It is fun stock. But the bigger the jump, say one where you can leap over a car, it is at its limits which makes sense. If you tell me what you specific quality you're looking for, I'd be happy to share my experience. Of note, the updated bike Costco sells has Sram/Rock Shox suspension vs Fox.

    Thank you so much, Yuri! I bought a 2001 Specialized Rockhopper Disc and it came with Magura Julies, (single piston, only one pad moves, one side is fixed-180mm/160mm Rotors). This is when Disc's were just coming out, (here in Hawaii) and no one heard of Magura's. When I brought my bike in for the 1 year free adjustments, they didn't know how to keep them from dragging. In order to center the rotor, you have to remove the rotor adjust with shims. I changed the pads 3x and never flushed the oil, (my mechanic said "if its not leaking, I don't have to"). I just bought a my dream bike a Litespeed Hiwassee Titanium Full Suspension, (just the frame). Thanks, your video help me decide on the MT5's unless I break down and go for the yellow). I like your bike colors! My Rockhopper frame is blue and black with yellow fenders and other accessories to match the yellow Specialized name. and pinstripes. I also have a yellow Gyro Switchblade full face helmet, (w removable jaw piece to be like a road helmet, don't know why cause I always leave it on). So I guess I am building a bike (this will be my first), should be easier than restoring my 1957 Porsche, right! Thanks Again, I will subscribe!

The new models have smaller beads, (Giant bikes had the most beautiful welds). With titanium and no paint, you save between 2-3 lbs.), I should've got on earlier; life is short. Nice. I got the Sniper trail 2019, my first full suspension and it turned out to be exactly what I hoped coming from hardtail. I like a lightweight bike and did not want something that felt like it sapped the energy from my effort and the suspension kinematics are really on point. Even full open on the road there's little Bob. The biggest improvement is the climbing ability on technical or just root terrain. I am still too used to unweighting the rear anticipating a ledge etc which is still a great skill but I have to learn to keep some weight there for traction and let the suspension do the work. Short steep tracks with loose dirt that were impossible are now possible as I just keep weight down and winch up. Before I would spin out. Love the bike as it just opens up more possibilities.

      This is my first experience with the JS tuned VPP platform and I really how that feels overall. GT's Angle Optimized System (AOS) being my favorite. I do like colorways of the Intense Sniper frames. But, yeah, I wanted a lightweight bike that wasn't going to tax me as I climb 1500' ascending non stop. Look up Tiger Mountain (Washington state) trails on Trailforks for reference - it's where I ride. But for XC races, this bike does pretty good even though it weighs more than my hardtails.

      @yuri_on_youtube 5 месяцев назад

      I reached out to Amp Research just to at least say I tried and they don't have any rebuild kits for the rear swingarm anymore but did up until 2010! However, taking the swingarm apart, it does look like bushings I can buy from an automotive shop or even Amazon if I want to do this one the cheap. The real challenge would be finding to swingarm pivot axle which, on this bike is steel since I got a magnet to stick to it. So, I think I'd ask a machine shop or Risse Racing to custom make me one. As for the press kit, a wood block works to set it and a regular bearing press kit (for a full suspension bike) to get the axle out.

    • @peglor
      @peglor 2 месяца назад

      Having used both, the MT5 is noticeably less powerful than the MT7, I think because the lever piston is bigger in the MT5, so lower pressure in the fluid at the same lever force. I run a set on my 24" trials bike and 2 sets on 29ers for XC/marathon use. The MT5 is less prone to pad rub though, because the pistons retract more when the lever is released. Ali Clarkson on youtube has run Saint levers with MT7 calipers, and got excellent results. His big issue is that he loads the levers sideways on some big trials moves (And he's an absolutely amazing rider, so he doesn't give components an easy time), so he damages the Maguras levers, while the Shimano ones are stronger.

    I'm the original owner of a similar DS950. I picked it up from Supergo back in 2000 or so. It's a great entry level full suspension bike and well worth the price that I paid way back then.

      Supergo was great. I didn't have one where I lived but I did order from them when they had catalogs. Best prices back then. I have different iterations of the Univega and with as much hard riding as I do, they still survive into 2024!

      If you're in the US, there are a couple on eBay, specifically for the non-trunion. Another option is just finding a frame for sale and salvaging the shock off it. For the amount of time and hassle these days, I've just ordered custom shocks from Risse Racing for the LTS and RTS bikes.

      Interestingly enough, I'm literally on my way to an XC bike race with this wheelset. I have trials ridden, dirt jumped and competed in XC on these. Still true both side to side and still round. I did nick one of the spokes on a rock two years ago and it hasn't broken! I'll take apart the hub and see if I notice any pitting or what the wear looks like.

    Have you had a chance to swap out the 2.2 tires for 2.35 like you mentioned a couple weeks ago? I just picked up this bike and am considering putting 2.35 tubeless on it but would be interested to know if you found there is enough room for them in the back. Thanks.

    Have you swapped out the 2.2 tires for 2.35 yet? I just picked up this bike in Canada and was considering putting 2.35 tubeless on it but would be good to know if there is enough clearance in the back before doing so. Thanks.

      I did and went with Vittoria Mezcal 2.35" wides and rode it pretty hard into berm turns to see if I would get any tire rub from wheel flex and did not encounter those issues. So, I can confirm that 2.35" wides will fit on this bike.

      Maguras just have that bite I enjoy from their rim brakes to their discs. Particularly with Maguras, I've had them perform with negligible fade on minutes long descents. Once these brakes are set up right, they're great. I do eat through pads probably a half a year but to me, the performance is really hard to beat,

    Picked up the same bike through the same deal. Couldn’t be happier based off of the first few rides. I’ve been eyeing a mtb for some time now and I couldn’t pass up this bike for the value that it is. Great for a first time mtb with all of the accessories and tools to hit the trails right away

      It's a really good set up. I swapped out the wheels to a spare set of carbon FSA Gradients, a Sram GX cassette and Vittoria Mezcals and the bike is lighter and quicker. But it doesn't feel as fun since these FSA carbon wheels are ultra stiff. I'll eventually replace the FSAs with Spinergy MXX30s so the ride quality isn't as rigid.

      @@yuri_on_youtube Interesting I was considering a wheel upgrade at some point as well for the obvious weight improvement. I'll probably just plan to thrash the stock pair till I would realistically need something new since I likely won't be racing it in the near future.
