Ten Boating Laws Oregon Boaters Should Know
Oregon’s boating safety laws reflect established maritime traditions and safety practices, but not everyone operating a boat understands the difference between legal requirements and recommended safety practices. This video covers ten laws that are fundamental to safety. Keep in mind that following these laws extends beyond avoiding receiving a ticket; boaters who are involved in accidents can face substantially greater civil liability if they were violating a law at the time the accident occurred. Not every law related to boating safety is covered in this video. A few examples are laws regarding operating boats by minors, education requirements, local requirements, and those applying to ...

The longstanding claim by the wakesurfing community that education can negate the need for regulation belies the experience on the Newberg Pool portion of the Willamette River in Oregon. After years of effort at education and a wake energy study, the Oregon Legislature enacted reasonable restrictions on towed watersports in 2022 for this environmentally-vulnerable part of the river. Rather than...

Recent and ongoing research regarding wake boats is providing useful quantitative information regarding important parameters such as wave energy. Nonetheless, it is important to be mindful that this research involves the effects of single wake boats. Because it is common to have several wake boats engaged in wake sports at a time, additional allowances for the increased energy inputs should be ...

Paddling has become the most popular form of boating on the Willamette River. This video shows the history that made widespread paddling possible and provides an overview of the parts of the river, the requirements for paddlers, and basic safety. A good source of information about how to access the river and suggested trips can be found on the Willamette River Water Trail website. willamettewat...

In response to complaints across the country about the damage caused by wake boats, the wakesurfing industry has resorted to misinformation in an attempt to dissuade state and local governments from imposing the kind of restrictions that are necessary to protect vulnerable water bodies and their shorelines, bottom habitats, and surrounding property. The cornerstone of the wakesurfing industry’s...

Oregon Families for Boating is a political action committee formed by two wake boat dealers to combat legislation needed to protect the Willamette River from the environmental, property, and recreational resource damage caused by wakesurfing. Despite its name and pretenses, it represents a minuscule fraction of Oregon boaters. Although Oregon Families for Boating made massive expenditures on lo...

Although complaints about the damage caused by wake boats have arisen across the country, the Willamette River in Oregon has been hit especially hard. Some limits have recently been placed on wakesurfing, wakeboarding, and tubing, but they do not directly address the concerns that wake sports are injuring and killing species of salmon and steelhead listed under the Endangered Species Act and di...

This video was made in 2020 at a time when the large steep wakes generated by boats engaged in wakesurfing, wakeboarding, and tubing on the Willamette River were harming the environment, damaging shoreline property, and making other forms of recreational boating unpleasant, and at times hazardous. The goal of the video was to show the problems created by these boats and to bring needed attentio...

    I’ve read most of these comments, I find it disturbing, yet predictable that the surf boat people defend the obvious destruction of the natural lakes by their unnatural boats with threats, name calling, entitlement, and ridicule. This is killing our lakes throughout the country. I guess their rush is more important than a flourishing lake.

    I been in both a kayak and a Seadoo and the wake is strong but that’s what riding is about if you can’t handle the wake then stay home or go to non motorized lakes there are plenty!

    Big problem 2 1/2 - 3 months out of the year? Lmao go find something better to do than complain about people enjoying life just because you can’t. It is the bad drivers and operators not the boat. People who disrespect other water enthusiasts such as paddle boats and wake boats are the problem. Respect everyone and share the water peacefully.

    Dude…. Do you even realize your living on property covered in concrete and fenced in after 1492?!… how far do you want to push the “shore line” and erosion? Because it could easily be said your personal property development violated others rights of people that lived more symbiotically with the the land you currently reside without pouring concrete foundations or cutting down trees to make framing in the name of progress. If you and your assentors weren’t here to bitch about it, means you were never here in the 1st place, and good riddance. But if you live in a brick and mortar house and drive a gas/diesel vehicle on concrete roads… you too are the cause off erosion. “Let he that has caused no sin cast the 1st stone”.

    I am 100% behind wakesurfing. Love it. It does seem to reason that as this form of boating has grown exponentially that it could be time to re-visit no wake zones. Original strategies around NWZ I dont think contemplated the sheer volume of folks driving these boats. Maybe increase the distance to 250? As long as people try to argue for a ban- they will get nowhere. You cant win against the fastest growing segment of the boating industry. But maybe small adjustments could be made to give a little more protection to docks and personal property. I know this country refuses to even discuss middle ground these days but it sure would be nice if we could at least try.

      Sorry, the 1980's, 1990's, did not have the technology to create the wave energy of the current modern wake/surf boats that have the latest technolgy, including hydrofoils. And they are not always emptying their bladders and/or retracting their pull downward hydrofoils.

    Kayakers should be required to register thier lil boats yearly as well. Love the old man with mansions on river complaining about having to maintain his water front property. And whining about wakes as he paddles the smallest plastic tub he can right up the middle of the river.

  • @eastwood5034
    @eastwood5034 Месяц назад

    Also kayakers should be required to purchase a sticker just like every other boat be a great revenue to build new docks for kyakers. Maybe make a video on how to launch a kayak with out taking up the whole boat ramp. Maybe show how you can drag ur lil boat on dock tie off. Just love trying to launch but have 1 or 2 plastic tubes sitting out in middle of the boat ramp while they go park the Subaru

  • @eastwood5034
    @eastwood5034 Месяц назад

    Garbage. Just because you want to paddle ur plastic tube up a river in the middle of the river doesn’t give you the right to complain or get mean boats out of the whole river. Take ur plastic boat to a lake that’s non motorized. Barges that’s and ships create the biggest wakes you do t cry about that. We get 3 months to boat in sun.

      Better yet, you wake boaters can sell your boats and have your wake surfers all go to California and surf actual waves or something, instead of pretending on a lake damaging smaller boats, docks, shorelines, being a menace to swimmers and potentially killing people.

    SS Narcissist. Wake boats = Karen boats. No respect for the waterway or the people who live there. Those waves look like ocean chop hitting the shore. Lake shores are very fragile. Find a Corp Of Engineers lake where the entire shore is riprapped.

    They (wave / wake boats) are out of control on Lake Anna, Va. Why not let them have the lower 25% of the lake where they have adequate width and depth (remove damaging backwash)? If the stayed on the lower %25 they would have the dam and it's huge riprap on one side, with enormous lake widths on either side with plenty of room for dissipation. But the 200' rule is fantasy. I can site on my dock and observe that easily. My neighbor is staring down $100K in shoreline damage that started just 5 years ago when the newer large boats showed up. He has lived here 45 years with no issues until recently.

What’s the difference between a boat with a dry weight of 4400lbs towing someone in a tube and a boat with a dry weight of 4400lbs and empty factory ballast bags towing someone? Or an older ski boat that didn’t have factory bags but the owner added them later and is towing someone? Oh that’s right, nothing. The micro plastic from your kayak is harming the environment just as much. I hope you are just as outraged about it and working just as hard to fix that problem now.
