The Blackbird Set Dance, 144 BPM in dancer arrangement with notes and tab
Просмотров 117День назад
One of the most well-known set dances in Irish dance, this tune has a wide range of versions out there but this is the version that a lot of dancers know. Played at 144 bpm, with an extra A part at the start and no repeat on the B part.

Ill-advised, but I actually enjoy slow airs on the tenor banjo. The notation and tab here is based on the playing of accordion master Tony Mac Mahon, played with a very free rhythm.

The Midnight Reel on tenor banjo, with notes and tab

Also known as Mrs. Crotty's Christening. This is a tune I learned in Rochester sessions from John Michael Ryan and others. A simple single reel with a start similar to The Merry Blacksmith, it diverges significantly in the third bar. Often played with the parts in reverse order, particularly when trying to differentiate it from the Blacksmith.

Thanks!
Love this tune...lots of lovely versions.
Thanks!
❤ thanks for the tab
One of my favorite tunes, and one of my favorite traditional sets!
Thanks Kathy!
Fig for a kiss ahh my favourite song
Yo thanks a lot for ths tune please do more banjo sessions also would you do the letter notes aswell?
Thanks for the suggestion! Adding letter notes into the videos alongside the notation and tab is tricky to fit on screen in the longer tunes (this one would probably be fine). But I might be able to put them into the descriptions, on request. How is this format? |: G-G'E' D'-E'D' | B-G'E' D'BAB | G-G'E' D'-E'D' | BGAG EGG- :| |:BE'E'D' E'--G' | F'G'A'F' G'F'E'F' | BE'E'D' E'--G' | F'G'A'F' G'--- :|

Thank you so so much for this. Definitely an easier way for beginners like to "taste" without getting too frustraited. I'd love more "10 learner friendly Irish...." videos (jigs, polkas, waltzes, etc) Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
@@jimbagsh9569 thanks for the feedback, I'll work on some more in this series!
great practice idea!
Thanks Jim! I'm thinking of doing some more in this vein at some point.
thanks man
I love Irish Tenor banjo. Thank you
Such a great resource. Many thanks for your trouble on this and your other videos, your time and effort is much appreciated. I LOVE playing Irish music slowly, the melodic shape of the tunes is so beautiful, clever, poignant. For example, I play Donnybrook Fair as a free-time slow air, it works really well. Blarney Pilgrim as a counterpoint slow tempo finger-style guitar piece, Smash the Windows on bouzouki with an eye on Bach, particularly that wonderful B section. Don't get me wrong, I love the tunes blisteringly fast as well, but they are very satisfying at slower tempos.
Great, enjoy playing the tunes! I love taking a well-known tune and reinterpreting it with a different sense of rhythm and emphasis too. Your comment brings to mind -- have you heard Alan Reid and Rachel Conlan's album A Quare Yield? I highly recommend their meditative drone-and-oud version of the jig "Mayorhamilton the Eighth of May."
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is fantastic

Thanks IFG -- sounds like a great set!
These are the sauciest, most lip smacking polkas in the game right now, bang up job!
Thanks Ben
Nice tune and great playing as always.
Thanks, Phil!
Lovely handy pace to learn it at. I just took this one for homework from a session last week 🙂 Thanks!
@@oreillyholly Best type of homework is tune homework! 🙂
i don't quite get why the tablature isn't matching with what he plays. it's clearly different - why...
Ah, I see what you mean -- in bars 4, 7, and 15 I was playing B A F# rather than A G F#. Sorry about that! I'll need to re-record this video at some point.
@@BenjaminHockenberrythanks for clarifying and sorry for the harsh language. i was looking for nice ornament ideas since i’m just starting to learn them and there are lots of videos in which this exact tablature is shown but everybody plays something different. i was kind of fed up with that yesterday. apart from that: really nice video!
@@leSheep1337 No problem, and thanks for the followup! If you're catching the differences between the tab and my fingers, you're getting some ideas of ornamentation and variation to try to match by ear, that's great. On this tune, I'm using some rolls and cuts on the long E notes to break them up into an 1/8 note pulse. When I'm "cutting" -- breaking up notes by lifting a high finger and putting it back down quickly -- I'm usually using my top hand's third finger. I also use the "ha-ta-ta ha-ta-ta" tonguing technique a fair amount here, with the first note of each "jig grouping of 3" slurred out of the preceding group. If you google "Brother Steve's Tin-Whistle pages," his section on jigs breaks down this "slur-tongue-tongue" style.
