Rod Ridge Farm
США
Добавлен 7 сен 2014
Rod Ridge Farm is nestled among the rolling hills of Appalachia in southeast Ohio. After being an instructor at Old School Survival Boot Camp, I was inspired to launch a RUclips channel by my cousin and best friend Jessie - who loves to learn, fail, and succeed along with me on the farm.
On the Rod Ridge Farm Channel I will be showcasing real life on a family farm. I plan to share it all folks, the good, the awesome, the funny, the serious, the beauty, and the dirty ugliness which are part of this lifestyle we love.
While the Rod Ridge Farm Channel will be showcasing all aspects of life on the homestead, I will focus heavily on the areas of farming that I love the most: gardening, canning and food preservation, raising livestock, crafting,- and any other farming tasks that help prevent me from doing boring indoor domestic chores.
You will often see my family in the videos, because we are all in this together, farming is our way of life.

Making veggie soup!
We are snowed in on our hill. I was looking for something to fix that lasted a few days. I decided on veggie soup. I went to the pantry and started pulling jars off the shelves. Being snowed in makes the canned food I worked so hard to put up all worth it. #homesteading #farmtotable #selfsufficient #veggiesoup #cannedgoods

Winter weather livestock feeding!
Просмотров 6712 часов назад
I was nominated for the snow challenge, and I am too old for that. I revised the challenge, no hood but still clothed and shoes. I did the feeding, so my challenge took about 45 minutes, not one minute. Livestock and winter are not a fun combo. On the bright side, I got two eggs and didn't fall despite Hailey's best efforts. #homesteading #winterseason #livestock #farming #winterchores
Pressure canning chicken meat!
Просмотров 20716 часов назад
Another step of the Rod Ridge Farm chickens is complete. I have canned some of the meat. This meat will be used for making a meal quick or adding to homemade chicken noodles. Canning chicken is just one more way of preserving and stocking your pantry. #homesteading #selfsufficient #farmtotable #pressurecanning #chicken
Fried chicken for dinner!!
Просмотров 13319 часов назад
The Rod Ridge Farm meat chickens are finally dispatched of. I spent the whole day processing these huge birds. As a reward we are having fried chicken for dinner. We prefer our chicken breaded by rolling it in eggs and then flour. I slowly fried the chicken in a cast iron skillet. It was delicious. #selfsufficient #farmtotable #meatbirds #friedchicken #homesteading
Making a prepping and hiking cache!
Просмотров 45614 дней назад
Every year, for Christmas, we give homemade gifts. This year, for some of the really cool kids on our list, we made cache for them to carry on hikes and to help with farm chores. They come personalized and packed with all sorts of things. I am excited to see them carry them when we do our get togethers and outings. #selfsufficient #cache #prepared #hikingkit #forthekids
Straining the apple scrap vinegar!
Просмотров 3721 день назад
The apple scrap vinegar has set for two weeks with the scraps in it doing it ferment thing. It is now time to strain it. Once it's strained, the scraps can be discarded or go to the chickens. Now I wait for 2 to 4 more weeks. #homesteading #selfsufficient #apples #wastenotwantnot #applescrapvinegar
Fixed my pressure canner!
Просмотров 1621 день назад
My pressure canner has been having issues. It would get pressure in the pot but never build it. Steam kept escaping from the lid. My gasket looked to be fine, but it was the easiest way to try first. I found the model number to my canner (it's on the outside of the canner) and ordered a new gasket online. #homesteading #selfsufficient #pressurecanning #steamonly #newgasket
Looking at Christmas lights!
Просмотров 7521 день назад
We took a break from our usual chores and went a d saw some Christmas lights. We went to Gallipolis to the park and looked at their huge light display. They do this every year and we usually go, it's only about 45 minutes from our house. The Gallipolis lights are always a huge tourist attraction, and we get to see our oldest and his wife when we go. #familytime #christmas #galllipolisinlights #...
Getting new goats for the farm!
Просмотров 5821 день назад
My friend is moving so I am taking her goats. They are some very loved nigerian dwarf nanny goats. Arnie had to drag the stock trailer out of the field with the tractor because of how muddy it is. The girls are finally loaded and brought to their new home here at Rod Ridge Farm. Right now, they are separated because they are a bit overweight, and I don't want them exposed to my billy goat. #hom...
Feeding cows and checking on Mabel!
Просмотров 47028 дней назад
Here at our friends' farm doing some chores. We have fed the cows, and Arnie is putting hay out. Then I went down to see Mabel in the field with the weanlings. She is around three months pregnant and doing great. The fields are so wet from this December rain that makes a heck of a mess. #homesteading #cows #Mabel #dairycow #farmlife
Making liquid laundry soap!
Просмотров 75Месяц назад
Laundry soap can be very expensive, especially in a household my size. This is a very simple soap to make. I have only ever made it in a five gallon batch. I use a whole bar of the fels napth soap. You can buy it grated, but honestly, it is simple to grate yourself. Plus, I still have to melt it, so I grate it, too. #homesteading #selfsufficient #homemadesoap #laundry
Making Apple Scrap Vinegar!
Просмотров 73Месяц назад
I made an apple pie, so that left me with apple scraps. I could have given the scraps to the critters, but I needed to make vinegar. Apple scrap vinegar uses all of the leftover pieces of apple that don't go into the pie. Now, I use this vinegar to clean and with meals. I don't can with it because I don't know the acidity level. #homesteading #selfsufficient #apples #wastenotwantnot #applescrap...
Making homemade apple pie!
Просмотров 61Месяц назад
My all-time favorite pie is apple. This recipe came from my mom, and it's my favorite. The apples you use are all based on your preference, I like the tart ones. This apple pie is absolutely delicious when you use the homemade flaky pie crust(in another video). I took this pie to dinner and brought home an empty pan. #homesteading #selfsufficient #applepie #homemade #apples
Planting windowsill container lettuce!
Просмотров 35Месяц назад
A gardeners work is never done. Plus, the desire to have fresh and safe produce is there. I am planting a Non-gmo container variety of lettuce. It will set in my windowsill in the kitchen, where it will receive natural light. Once the plant bolts, I will be able to save the seeds to grow in the garden the next season because they are non-gmo. #homesteading #selfsufficient #gardening #containerg...

Making chicken salad from home butchered chicken!
Veggie soup and veggie chicken noodle are the best!!
Yes!
I had a friend ask if I wanted to make snow angels. I told her if I got down there I would BE a snow angel because I couldn’t get up!! Lol. I have to trudge out and fill propane tanks at work. One comes and 8 more show up, an hour later I finally get to go back in. This winter sucks!
It definitely does. I used to want to live in Alaska, but this weather made me realize I'm not made for the cold of Ohio, let alone colder
Looks great! I am admiring those beautiful eggs too! I just had to pay $9 for 18 eggs! I so want to move so I can have chickens!!
Thank You! Oh my gosh. That is insane. Can you not even keep hens at your place? I mean they don't crow
@ nope. A neighbor tried and another neighbor complained to the city council so they had to get rid of them. Absolutely ridiculous!
Definitely ridiculous
I use a little seasoned bread crumbs with my flour and spices. Adds a nice extra crunch.
That would be good!
Looks delicious!!
Overall it looks in good condition. You will need to replace some of the firebox liners, looks like one was missing. The area in back of firebox is to run a copper water line in for a water heating system. Congrats on your garage sale find, I luv my wood cook stove.
That makes sense. Thank you
That is a fantastic idea!!
I made them with my nieces and nephews, and we take them on our adventures, too
@ I will have to make some for my grandkids.
thanks for sharing..good luck,,
Awesome!
Rub some lard on it when not in use so it won't get hard
Definitely will do. It did get me 10 years before needing replaced
Beautiful 🎄
Yay new goats!!
That's what I say, but not Arnie
@ same here. I get the eye roll and the huff. 😜😁
Thats pretty easy. Im going to make a batch. I have an 8 year old son whos autistic and obsessed with doing laundry. Its a good problem to have lol . Everyday he asks to wash and dry a load. He doesn't fold or separate though and he may steal your clean towel while your in the shower. I think he'd enjoy helping me make a batch too. Thank you for sharing this
That's awesome. Laundry is a great life skill for him too!
How much of the bar did you use? I probably missed it 😅. I used to make this too. Stopped when I moved off the farm.
I use the whole bar
@ ok. That’s what I thought but couldn’t remember. Thanks!
You're welcome!
I made a half gallon a few months ago and have a second going now. Best vinegar!
Have you figured out how to check the acidity? ACV is getting expensive, and I would love to be able to use this
@ no. I have no clue. I check my pH but not acidity. I cook with it but not canned with it because of that. Let the research begin!! Lol
It is wonderful when our littles help in the kitchen. She will be so proud!
She had a piece and said she did a good job
If I was going to do this now-my house is so cold-55-i would put it on and keep it on a heated grow pad. It's also the only way I've been able to get sweet potatoes to sprout. GOOD Luck!
I never thought about the heating pad. It's about 70 in my house after the fire gets going
@sarahrodriguez5404 70 sounds like Heaven!🤣🤣🤣
I hope it works!!
Nice job!
Hopefully it grows
Looks great!!
It was a pretty bird
Good looking turkey!
Great job!
Thanks for this one! I see chickens being done but never the struggles of a turkey.
Love it!
Very similar to our royal stove
Thanks for this one!! Now I know what exactly to ask for at the butcher if they will sell it to me.
I am hoping to get about a year's worth from this batch. Honestly, the lard is reused a lot before I have to toss it(and then it goes over the dog food)
@ great idea for dog food! I really do appreciate all your videos!
Great job! Good ole chicken compost, I put that stuff on everything lol
Yes, exactly!
Love repurposing things!! Wish I had one of those! Great job.
We tried to use it as a waterer but it wouldn't stop leaking, raised bed was the next best thing!
I have got to find some wine berry bushes!!
Sooooo Sweet!!! 🐷❤️😍🥰🤗😁 Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland!🐖😘
Donkey’s just soak up the love. 💗
He was. I just loved him and wanted to bring him home with me
Love chicken salad!
I think the grapes just make it!
I have never been able to make pie crust! Thanks, I will try again soon. Great job! 🥧
This one is easy. Be sure not to go crazy with the lard, melt 1/3 a cup and that is all. Otherwise, it will taste greasy and have a weird texture
I really need to get some lard!! Trying to get leaf fat to make my own but not having any luck. I can use any pork fat but it won’t be WHITE, correct? I have made ghee and tallow so far.
You can, but I have found the taste to be a little off with less pure lard. Honestly, use what you like, though.
Love making noodles and dumplings. I prefer flat dumplings and the guys like drop dumplings so we alternate. 😅
I like a drop dumpling too
Haha love that name😅 he will do fine there. Maybe you should get more 😊
He has escaped with the help of Pearl about 5 times now. I think I have it rigged up to hold them now. Crazy pigs
He’s a cutie!
Now that's a cute piggy....how you gonna eat him?
Well, right now, he is lose so that makes the decision a bit easier +
Well, right now, he is lose so that makes it an easier decision.
Looks fantastic!! I have made plenty of apple sauce but never apple butter. If I can get local apples I will have to try it! Hope you get them all used up!!
I'm still working away at them. Plenty of apple products for tbe pantry.
Looks good!
Thank you
Do you not own a rake?
I do, this wasn't at my house thougj
They make these things you can use that allow you to gather large amounts of leaves at the same time while standing up.
Lol, if I was doing the pile I would have raked it
Really good idea.
Thank you. Good way to use the onions up before they start to rot.
If onions hurt your eyes, wear goggles. It helps.
All I have are the purple swimming ones. Not sure if I could have seen good enough
I have wanted to do this but like you, it is too damp and cold here to do it outside.😢😅 Come spring I will be doing some.
I think after a bit we were nose blind because it didn't bother me that much
@@sarahrodriguez5404😆🙃
Great idea!
I'm excited to have them!
Super cute! Love her little voice. Reminds me of my daughter when she was younger.
Thank You. She is so curious and loves to help me
Fried cabbage is fantastic!! As a kid I hated cooked cabbage of any kind. As an adult I live it! I do it with smoked sausage or kielbasa.
I did too. Now I love it. It is so good with smoked sausage or kielbasa that is our go-to for meat with it usually
Those things just sneak up on you!! I won’t ever touch a reaper, that is just too hot!!
His face when it started to burn told it all
Too funny. When are you going to post the video after he takes a big bite of the Carolina Reaper Pepper?
He said not goin to happen!
