    So, christians destroyed the serapeum because of pagans' violence… Well, it seems that a christian fanatic is narrating the video

    • @lexie_henning
      @lexie_henning 4 месяца назад

      Perhaps more detail could be added, but the Serapeum was closed via orders of Constantine - the first Christian Emperor - and then destroyed by Roman soldiers under Theodosius I who was known for making pagan feasts into workdays, banning public sacrifices, and closing down many pagan temples during his reign. Not sure why this sentence should be perceived as fanatical or highly biased. Simply reporting what established literature has shown. "The Serapeum was the last stronghold of the pagans who fortified themselves in the temple and its enclosure. The sanctuary was stormed by the Christians. The pagans were driven out, the temple was sacked, and its contents were destroyed" - an excerpt taken directly out of A Contribution to the Archaeology of the Western Desert: IV. With One Plate from the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library by Alan Rowe and B.R. Rees.

      @@CEIVE4EVER well technically it is still a highly debated topic regarding how far Constantine/following emperors went with anti-pagan legislation. Scott Bradbury, Bart Ehrman, Brown, R Errington, Willis Swartz, etc. and many more all have varying opinions. I'm still unsure how my drawing a conclusion enough to mention one of the bigger suppositions re the destruction of the Serapeum comes off as Christian fanaticism rather than stating a recycled academic opinion. However as to being uncomfortable with the subject... I don't really have strong feelings either way. I personally am an atheist who doesn't like religion as a concept but my family is Jewish. So while I can appreciate you holding a different academic opinion, your personal assertion couldn't be more incorrect. I am happy to discuss academic points of view but randomly making such a strong accusation and picking a random internet squabble is strange.

      @@CEIVE4EVER I spent many hours reading literature in academic articles. Brown - who you mention - is guilty of some revisionist history. Especially in his book The World of Late Antiquity. I try my best to read a well rounded account to learn about history. Saying there's no debate is just painfully untrue. There will always be scholarly debate - especially around this time in history and these controversial figures.

    Witcher 3 and AC Odyssey are two of my favorite games and I've played both numerous times making different choices to get a slightly different story and outcome. The Kyra quests are my favorite part of the game and in fact I did a playthrough using a Mod that used Kyra's head for Kassandra and allowed different hairstyles. The only mistake with the Kyra story IMO was not being able to recruit her as a ship Lt at the end.

    • @theozymandiasproject
      @theozymandiasproject 3 года назад

      We made this for 4th graders and it wasn't worth going into Minos being the "step-father" after his wife got pregnant by the bull. We also wanted to avoid the larger topic of cheating and cursing so it's the "clean" version! When we make the high school/college age version we'll be including the proper nuance.

      @@theozymandiasproject Ah. Yes, I'd agree that the story of the conception of the minotaur is not rated G. One thing I wanted to ask about: The version of the story of Icarus and Daedalus I know has them escaping from Crete using the wings, not Daedalus going to Crete after the wings. Is that another version?

    • @theozymandiasproject
      @theozymandiasproject 3 года назад

      @@michaelsommers2356 Yes, Daedalus was Cretan-born. But the version I grew up with said that he'd traveled to Athens at the invitation of the Athenian king Erechtheus. There he and Icarus lived with his nephew Perdix. Perdix was a young inventor and when he invented the saw, Daedalus was so jealous of Perdix's accomplishments that he tried to murder him by pushing him off the Acropolis in Athens. Athena saved Perdix and turned him into a partridge. But Daedalus was tried and convicted of murder and thus he fled to Crete. After arriving on Crete is when Minos had him build the labyrinth. But we chose to tell the story in a simplified way for the kids. We didn't intertwine the timelines. Hope that helps :)
