Sudden sensorineural hearing loss - details on a new National UK trial
Просмотров 1144 месяца назад
Sudden hearing loss can be devastating and affects fit and well healthy people. Awareness is still very low that it even exists, and because of that we are behind on generating evidence for effective treatments. In this video I raise awareness on a national multi-centre randomised controlled trial that is currently taking place in the UK to seek further clarity on how best to treat the conditio...

After meningitis ...my child should do cochlear implant surgury ... Please sir can you help my 8 years child please
Sir can i have your whatsapp number please .. I can send child reports 😢
My 8 years old child should do choclear implant surgury .... In my country said its difficult
I have conductive hearing loss SSD. I tried a baha headband just as a trial in the office. Speech recognition was nearly 100%. Should I go with an adhesive non surgical device or would a surgical implant be better?
It will come down to your preference but hopefully your audiologist/implant surgeon will be able to counsel you based on your individual circumstances and details 👍
I’m SSD from birth. At 55 I’m really struggling, especially at social events (I avoid when I can) where I cannot hear what people are saying. I have in ear BiCROS from Signia but they can’t cope in busy environments and actually make my hearing worse. It’s really taking a toll on me now. How would I investigate a BAHA option? UK, many thanks.
You can absolutely explore a bone conduction device/implant as an alternative to your BiCROS. You need to be referred to your local auditory implant centre who will usually start by fitting a softband BAHA and then comparing the benefit to your BiCROS aid.
I found this super informative! Thank you for making this video!!
Thank you for taking a moment to let me know :)
Thank you for this very helpful video. I'm due implant surgery next month. Do you know any other good resources to help with choosing between traditional BAHA or Osia? I'm finding deciding between BAHA and Osia difficult, and given my good outcomes already with SoundArc headband, also questioning whether to proceed at all (I'm cautious after past surgery outcomes, and still have an unstable mastoid cavity).
@@markmacdonald904 all the best with everything. Hopefully this video gives a comprehensive overview but you can also find finer details on the manufacturer websites
Dr. Joe, how many days after the Baha implant can the processor be used? In other words, what is the length of bone integration time needed before the processor can be attached to the implant and used? Currently, in 2024, Is the surgery and healing for Baha more involved than for Ponto or are the surgery and healing similar for both brands? Thank you.
Thank you for your question. We tend to wait 6-8 weeks for osseointegration before loading the processor in our department, but opinion on this does vary between different units. The Mono skin punch technique is designed by Oticon for the Ponto device. The current guidance for Cochlear BAHA is to install this through a small incision. However both brands otherwise work very similarly.
Thank you - this was really helpful. I have deafness on both side but have been wearing a BAHA on one side for the past 20 years. I'm thinking about these three options and your video really has helped.
thank you for watching and for taking the time to post kind feedback 😊🙏
crazy question have you every had a person complaining about salty taste after the surgery?
I was wondering on the stapes superstructure if you turn it upside down with looking in between the two arches the middle part thru the neck to the head. So the head of the structure is on the table, I was wondering if the middle is solid or is it open thru the neck to the head of the structure? So would you be able to see the neck of the structure or is ut closed off is it solid so you can't see thru it? Also, what does the fluid in the round window and oval window feel like? Is it sticky? Does it feel like water? Just wondering. And can you possibly do a round window reflex like having the round window move in and out by pressing on the footplate or something else? Also, I was wondering does the stapes still will vibrate into the cochlea to the round window while you are doing surgery like would it be moving to sound like it normally does any other time? I was wondering if you could possibly show what the stapes superstructure look like from the outside thru the inside like have it standing up to have the head of the structure upside down sitting on the table so I can see what the stapes superstructure in the middle between the arches look like if it's possible? And one last thing, what do you do with the bones when you remove them from the ear? Also, can you show some blood flowing thru the vessels of the ear for awhile for like a minute or so? I love seeing the blood flow through the blood vessels and I love watching the Round window move in and out. If you press on the footplate hard what would it do to the oval window or the ear or the structure? If you can please 🙏 help me with these questions and show the stapes structure and the round window reflex I would be soooo happy. I would even pay you to see you help me answer these questions as I always wanted to know. Thank you for your time and service 🙏 Great videos and thank you for sharing them. I definitely definitely definitely love your wotmrk. I would love to be a ear surgeon like you. Have a blessed day 🙏
I’m trialing a BAHA though I like it the wind sounds loud through it. The sound doesn’t seem a loud either unless it’s better once it’s implanted.
You sound like a used car salesman. You are dealing with human life and emotions. Please do not dilute the seriousness of these surgical procedures. God forbid if it is one of your children doing this procedure, would you talk about it like you are selling used car?
Sorry to read these words. These are absolutely serious surgical procedures. As a parent myself, I treat any child under my care very preciously. My aim here in this video was to bring useful information to people in an accessible, watchable way so that people are better informed of their options to help their quality of life. I am sorry that was not achieved in the way you've received it. All best wishes.
@@earsurgeonjoeyou didn’t sound like a used car sales man at all and I never took it that way. It was very informative as I’m trialing a BAHA.
I don’t agree with this, this is a very helpful video, I saw a friendly face giving out important information
Thanks for that I'm in the process of having the hearing implant I already know what one I'm going to have so the percutaneous implant that one
Thanks Joe, really helpful.
Valid points. I concur.
Thank you for the video. So the BAHA would this cause a shadow for MRI. As I have a facial nerve neuroma that has partly erodid the mosdoid bone and ear canal, it is now completly blocking my ear canal. Causing mild/mod hearing loss. reverse cookie bite, conductive hearing loss. Low frequency starts at 45db at the lowest in the audiogram and peaks at 20db, 1k and then drops down to 40 and steadly does down to 70db in the highest frequecy to the very right of my audiogram.
This was very informative. Thank you
Hi sir i am a student with unilateral hearing loss amd i can pretty much do all the work without any issues at all....i was recommended a hearing aid for my other ear which i refused thinking better safer options might come in futurre...so since i dont face difficulty now...can i expect some good developments in this field as ia am just 21 now ....or should i go with the conventional one and will being unilaterally impaired affect my good ear to become worse....your reply wiuld be appreciated
Hello doctor , i just saw your reel on stapes surgery, i too have otosclerosis, and i am afraid of the surgery because of fear of hurting facial nerve during the procedure. What should you suggest?
very helpful
I had surgery to have acoustic neuroma removed in October 2022 that left me completely deaf on my left side with no option for a cochlear implant. I have very good hearing on my right side, what would you suggest in the case? Thank you
All of these options may be suitable for you - certainly worth exploring via your local auditory implant centre
What can we expect in 2024-2025 for bone conduction hearing implants?
We are expecting the Sentio from Oticon Medical…and hopefully other improvements on the horizon across the different manufacturers 🤞
Thank you
I have the OSIA implant and im happy with it
Thank you so helpful 12mins
Do you recommend for single sided deafness ,Thanks.
Yes these sorts of implants are an option for single sided deafness. The hearing level in the better ear is an important factor in decision making, and your surgeon should also evaluate these alongside the options of a hearing aid, CROS aid or cochlear implant.
I have the older style baha and recently received the new processor from Joe's team and it has made a big difference. Works with bluetooth devices with some additional hardware, great for listening to the TV and works fairly good in noisy environments. I did suffer with occasional small infections but since Joe recommended using baby wipes morning and night its all calmed down now and is so much cleaner with no infections anymore. Looking forward to getting the newer ver on my left side.
This was extremely helpful. I had a percutaneous BAHA fitted a few years ago but had to have it removed. I'm seeing my implant centre next week and as I'm probably going to ask for a transcutaneous implant if I'm a candidate. I've been trying to find a good comparison between the Bonebridge and Osia and this was exactly what I needed.
Thanks for letting me know this - very happy it was worth making for you!
Thank you so much. Amazing video. Question can you try a bone anchored hearing aid on a headband to see how well it works before you do the surgery?
Yes you can, and in fact such a trial of a softband makes up an important part of the pre-operative assessment before deciding on a surgical implant. Thanks for watching 😊
My audiologist has recommended I have the bone anchored aids for my hearing and has lent me one on a softband for a fortnight to see how I get on in various situations and environments before making the final decision. It is well worth it and highlights what it feels like to have the aid. I have found wearing a cap hides the band well without disrupting the aid.
Super helpful & informative - thank you so much! 😊
Thanks for watching ☺
Fantastic video.
Scary stuff, honestly.
Great points Joe
Fascinating insight!
