at 12:16 she make's two mistakes here. 1.) She brings up the fact that the US did not win Gold at the FIBA world cup. That team did NOT have the best American players on it. Not even close. The US Olympic team (2024) does, but that FIBA WC team did not. So that is automatically an invalid argument for comparison. 2.) Lyles' statement was about the NBA Champions, not the American national team. I don't understand why people keep getting this mixed up. The NBA Champs ARE NOT AMERICAN. People from all over the world play in this league. And the worst part is that at the time that he made these statements, the best two players on the Championship team at that time weren't even American. So when people try to use the FIBA WC or Olympics as justification for Lyles' statements, it shows a massive misunderstanding of what was actually said. Lyles' was completely wrong in saying that the NBA Champs aren't the world champs. A world championship does not mean you have to represent your country vs another country. Lyle's himself claims that a world championship is when you compete against the rest of the world but ignores the fact the he has NEVER raced against everyone in the world. A world championship means you have played against the best competitors in the world in that given field and that is exactly what the NBA season and post season are. The best players in the world play in this league. The best TEAMS in the world play in this league. Barring injury, a team cannot get lucky and beat a better team 4 times before losing 4 times. So that means that, given health, the best team always advances (unlike single elimination tournaments where luck plays a massive role and allows no room for adjustment to tactics). So many people try to turn this into Americans vs everyone else and they are completely missing the point of what was actually said. This has nothing to do with the American national team and everything to do with the fact that the NBA Champs meet every qualification to be considered world champs. So for me, the difficulty doesn't come in the olympics or WC for basketball players, it comes during the NBA season. And staying at the top of your game for so many months and being able to hold off tough opposition is just as tough as channeling perfection for 10 secs in any given race. Performing with only yourself to be accountable for is much easier than being world class and having to rely on your teammates to be on the same level. Just ask LeBron.
