Wait, where were the 01800s? I love those old classic pullman cars, but they are old, worn out and have a janky ride. In 1992, the Red Line Station Modernization Program was still underway and South Station and Broadway were the last to be renovated and completed in the summer of 1993. The utdcs were also still relatively new, only about 5-6 years old. Too bad the really old ones from the early 1960s aren’t in service anymore, but the seashore museum in kennebunkport, maine has cars 14501455 preserved. Also, think that the 15 and 1600s were only 5-6 years younger than the 1400s and outlasted them by three decades longer. They were originally due for retirement in ‘94, but that year came and went, with the T not finally announcing replacements for the Silverbirds until 2015. The pullmans are now 55 years old and among the oldest rapid transit cars still running on any metro systems in North America, the U.S. and in the world.

I'm 47, and live in Houston,TX now. Born andcraised in Boston. I was 17 in the Spring of 1994 when they were testing, and eventually had them up and running by summer of 1994. Hard to believe they are going to retire these now. Times flies and man I miss Boston and the T. Public transportation down here can't touch Boston. I'm old enough to remember riding the Silverbirds, Redbirds ( when they were painted Blue !!! ) 1400's and 1800's Do not take the MBTA for granted !

Weird how the 01400s had no door chime and the 015/16 and 17s have door chimes as do the 18s. Also, the 15s and 16s were built six years after the 14s and yet retired nearly 30 years ago and those trains are still running in regular passenger service as of 2024 at a whopping 55 years and counting. They are the oldest rolling stock since the retirement of the 0600s on the Blue Line and some of the oldest rolling stock of any metro system anywhere in the country and in North America, as well as some of the oldest rolling stock of any metro system anywhere in the world. Their Longevity. The 015s and 16s would outlast their specified service life of 25 years by another three decades.

I like the design those mp36 locomotives have. I like how the cab in the front is slant ended. Also like the LED display on the bottom front in between the ditch lights that says “10” or “11”. Both are currently at mpi in boise, idaho for overhaul work.

Living in Chestnt Hill at the time, I can recall the Riverside line being constructed by the Perini Corp.

I wish the T left the elevated line and just refurbished the tracks, stations, and steal beams. They also could have just added the Northeast Corridor as a second line.

Not happy with the vantage point, looking at the inside of the car isn’t the least bit interesting. The camera could have panned around been closer the front to get cab forward view .

These old Bluebird / Redbird cars, they were the last true subway cars on the T. Ever since the MBTA has purchased what I call metrorail cars.

So the vintage 1400’s had no door chime but they did have a distorted BING-BOMG PA chime?

I like the New Medford SLASH tufts route. - I like how they say Medford SLASH tufts....on the announcements. I take it from Medford Tufts and you usually get a type seven which is nice. with the inidvidual seats so I get my pick of the seats. =) its nice you can switch from the D train to the E UNION SQUARE to MEDFORD TUFTS at North Station or Lechemere as well.

I'm glad I got to see, ride and film it on color movie film many decades ago.

It's funny that the primary reason the T refused to put the street cars back in to the Arborway was it would interfere with vehicle traffic. Now we put in dedicated bus ways and bike routes and force all vehicles to stay in one lane.

Rode this many times from late ‘60s to mid ‘80s…always fun…I used to think the Eisenhower sign (above tracks) at 24:35 was a bygone remnant….but I read somewhere that it was actually a prop from a movie that was not removed after filming….not sure if anyone has better info on that…

. The PA chimes sounded bad at 6:02 but it could be the VHS quality or the old school cars actually had those creepy sounding chimes. I guess this was the year before the 1800 series were introduced?

At 36:21, I can't hear a thing the conductor says due to the squeaking wheels. It sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher. 😄

I miss the hawker siddley orange line trains so much

When I moved to Jamaica Plain in 1979 the trolley was still 15 cents and the Arborway line was famous for being the most crowded and slowest line in the whole T system. If you caught a trolley at Park Street at 10 PM, it would still be standing room only. During rush hour, you'd be waiting for half an hour for a trolley, then it would pass you by because it was completely packed with commuters.

I looked at this to see the neighborhoods of Mission Hill and Jamaica Plain where I lived as a young man back in the eighties. Trains...well I think it takes a special kind of locomotive fetish to follow and film trains for hours on a cold and wet wintry day. But thanks for a limited peek back in time at the environs I used to inhabit back in the day.

I actually wrote a fiction novel, with the Watertown Line being the primary inspiration. I want to eventually get it published, but just don’t have the money right now 😢

Hi. Watching the years from 1979 - 1989 I rod those trolleys on those tracks during the years I didn’t know what to do with my life. The trolleys provided the transportation to my eventual enlightenment. Since then, having found what to do and did it, I empathize with the young folks experiencing the same but having the extra burden of an unreliable transit system on their journey. Thanks.

2:33, 3234 still survives today in Mattapan. It was rebuilt last year at the MBTA’s Everett Shops, with the installation of interior components and inspections by MBTA personnel at the Mattapan Car house in Dorchester, MA.

Car 3230, shown at 28:00 still survives today in Mattapan. I rode it in March 2022.
