Oingo Boingo Live at Madame Wong's West, Los Angeles, CA 5-16-1980

In honor of Oingo Boingo Day, here's a soundboard recording of a show from their early days after transitioning from the Mystic Knights (a handful of songs in this show are from that period) to an eight-piece new wave band. As is common for most early Boingo soundboards, some instruments can barely be heard at times, but it's all mostly there. I've done a bit of EQ'ing as well as added a pseudo...
the guitars in 'i'm so bad'.... SHEESH.
Omg a live version of "I'm afraid"
Very very good , I’m impressed.
you have an instagram?
MEGA cool
🔥🔥🔥
Great job😮😮!!
Great cover. No idea why this is called a transcription, because I don't see any notation at all!
That's what many musicians call it when you memorize a solo. It's almost slang at this point. "I need to shed" "I need to transcribe more"
@@Joe-yi8xjI have literally never heard any musician use the word transcribe to refer to memorising something. A transcription is literally putting the music into a readable format.
@@danielhambrook3669 I know what it it is. It's a New York thing. What can I say?
Get it man
I have no idea who you are, an Elvin transcription was in my recommendeds and i went to check out another video and THERE'S LOOCH RIGHT THERE IN THE BACK ON THE BASS 😂
I was age 11 in '80 and was way into English Ska and poppy reggae like UB40. Pre-internet i listened to college radio and hung out at my local record store to find new, non mainstream music. Fast forward to the mid 80s, oddly enough i found Oingo Boingo through the album art of Only a Lad and Nothing to Fear. No money, I asked the guy at the store if they would play some of Lad to see what it was. It was slow and the guy played the whole album for me and my teen jaw was on the floor. This guy was so cool and asked if i wanted to hear the other album (Nothing to Fear). It was one of those moments where I wanted to tell the world what I had found. I bought one that day and returned the following weekend to buy the other. Through highschool this was "my band" and I caught every show when they came to my area. Then when Dead Man's Party dropped they hit the stratosphere. After that album their sound got a little too poppy for me--though still enjoyed them and the mainstream radio play and the Back to School film brought in a massive new audience. Kinda' melancholic when a time ends though. Mystic Knights, Oingo Boingo, Elfman's solo, then just Boingo will always have a place in my musical heart.
Fabulous
HIS SKIT WITH CATHERINE, GAHHHH, loved it. I wish there was video to go along with the audio. Would kill to go back in time and see this

Nailed, with plenty of swag! Excellent work
BUT, DO YOU PLAY PROMARKS ELVIN JONES DRUMSTICKS....I LOVE EM
That’s actually AMAZING. In my life I’ve seen several hundred hours of drumming on RUclips. I would put this in the amazing category. Not otherworldly (Vinnie level), but solidly amazing. 🍻!
Nice and love the Gretsch!
Video ended too early I was almost done 😔
🤓🥁👍🏼
Killed it dude
Awesome
Such surprising quality on this recording (compared to a lot of the other live performances I've heard uploaded). Really cool to continue seeing "new" songs crop up like Commando Girls and Nature Zone after watching and listening to so many of these performances. Great upload!
amazing!
Madame Wong's! Oingo Boingo! My entire senior year of high school just came flashing back! (omg! I was so cute! why did I think I was a freak??) (Oh yeah - parents!) Oingo Boingo - still a fan! Putting some Madness on now to see if I can remember college 👍🏻
Hey Danny this is Judy Russell Yee I have loved you guys since you first rocked my world when I worked at the Fox Venice Theater in the 70’s as a teenager 💃You guys were *The Mystic Nights Of The Oingo Boingo And a Fuckin show Then I worked at Madame Wongs from 1980 til 91 when it closed and I remember how bad she ripped of everything single band that played there , it broke my heart because the best
She showcased local talent that GOT major label recognition later on like the Go-Gos, Fishbone and yes “ the mystic knights of the Oingo Boingo!” When NO ONE ELSE WOULD. Madame Wong was a business woman in a city with a MEAN AND DARK HISTORY OF SH*TTING ON ASIANS AND MANY MINORITIES! I ran track and cross country against Angelo of Fishbone and when his group played at Madame Wongs he invited people to see them on stage- probably made peanuts from that gig, but the chance to play and get seen /heard was worth it to many. I also met Roach who had sang for “ roach and the white boys” and she was pushing the BRC ( black rock coalition which had Living Colour and Bad Brains and 24/7 spy’s ) at Madame Wongs Best time was seeing Anthony Keidis , Hillel Slovak and Balthazar ( Flea) play there as the Red Hot Chili Peppers- they were basically skateboarders and hang out dudes at Fairfax HS My experience at Madame Wongs China Town and later West- Santa Monica was cheap entry to shows and accessibility to upcoming talent that were just kids or 20 something’s you could actually TALK TO! That is rare these days for younger music fans” If you go to China town today, it’s going through BS hipster/ gentrification and there is NO monument to Madame Wong as what made the community is slowly being diminished. But for an 80s kid - it was magic to see this explosion of talent
Yeah
dude ur swingginnnnn
👍👍👍👍👍 awesome left hand 👍👍👍👍
