How to make Twisted Cording for Needlepoint ornaments or craft projects
Просмотров 23 тыс.4 года назад
Hi guys - quick video to show you my method for making twisted cord out of 2 colors of DMC floss. Just to recap: take the DMC floss, unravel it, double it over 3 times. You should have about 1 yard of floss now that is 8 strands thick. Do that again with your second color (you can use more than 2 if you want, but you'll probably not want to use it 8 strands thick). Then tie both colors together...

I wish you would have showed us how to finish it at the very end and how do I cut this excess off?.
Oh, no! I'm not sure what you mean. I just watched the video to the end and it looks like I showed how to fully finish the project, even cutting the final piece of the cording. Maybe I didn't hold the camera close enough? I'm not sure what was missing. :( Hopefully you're able to finish your project.
Thank you for showing me about this staedler I just ordered it. You have beautiful cursive handwriting by the way! My friends bought me the remarkable two for my birthday and I lost the original pin that came with it after a week 😭😭
Oh, thanks! Sorry you lost your pen! Hopefully you'll love the Staedtler!
Where do you buy the mountain mist ultra fine padding
I bought it at JoAnn's but it looks like it's also available on Amazon.

Could you please also describe the original remarkable pen?
Could you please also describe the original remarkable pen?
Hi - I never bought the original Remarkable pen. I thought it was too expensive. There are a number of people that did buy it so there should be videos out there describing it's performance. :)

@@VitoCorleone-s2g I don't have a Remarkable 2 brand pen. Thanks for the offer though.
Could you please also describe the original remarkable pen?
Do you find that hot glue works better than fabric glue?
It's not better long-term, per se, but it's faster. With normal fabric glue like Ailene's, which I love, you'd have to hold it for a long time until it's fully set. Would hate for it to move slightly as you're going around the circle and have it be wonky. I just trust hot glue since once it's done it's done and you know it's not going to come apart as you move around the item.
The first pen I purchased was the Norris Jumbo based on so many videos that recommend it. I didn’t like it, it felt too soft. I then ordered the Scribe pen (from kindle scribe) and Im really happy with it!! I even ordered the basic one because I noticed with the Jumbo that I could live without the eraser. At the end of the day, it’s based on personal preference.
Just finished my first ornament! Thanks for your great tutorials! Helped alot except unraveling the thread! Ouy ve
So glad it helped! Yeah, the thread sometimes has a mind of its own - LOL. :)
What size DMC do you use, 3 or 5?
So, the DMC that has sizes is the Perle Cotton DMC (kind of a textured rope of floss). That's not what I use for this. The one I use is just the standard DMC - it's a smooth floss and doesn't come in various sizes - just a ton of colors. If you want to share a link of where you're ordering it from I can look and tell you if it's the right stuff. It should be about 60 cents per skein if you're in the US.
@@jenyarose4411 I live in California and get DMC Cotton Pearl in person at my local Joanns or Michaels and pay about $1.25/each. Are you using regular floss which has about five strands per string and can be separated????
@@marypayne3715 yes! It's the regular floss with 6 strands. They should have all the colors at Joann's- it's the display that takes up about half the aisle. :)
Already loving the video!!!
Thanks! It's not a perfect video, but hopefully it will help people that are wondering how to do their own finishing. :)
Your tutorial was so helpful. Do you think that the hot glue will “fail” in a few years and the ornament can fall apart. Just worried. Thank you
Interesting. I've bought dollhouse items that were hot glued in the 90s and are still held together, but I have heard that if the hot glue gets really hot again it could turn from a solid to a liquid, so I would just make sure that the ornament doesn't sit in a hot car in summer or a window where the sun is really coming in and heating it up. I think they'll be just fine for the long haul. :)
I am going to try! My LNS charges $130 for ornaments!
OMG! That's a lot for an ornament. There are people that do them for $50 or $60, so that's really on the high end, but you'll be surprised at how easy it is!
Thank you so much for this video! Very helpful! Deb x 🤗
Do you need an adapter piece for the drill? I’m having a hard time finding the cup hook drill attachment
Hi Jen - the cup hook is not a drill attachment. It's just a cup hook that you buy in a package at a shop like Target, Walmart, probably a hardware store...You might be able to grab them on Amazon.
Perfect! Just what I wanted to know! thank you.
Oh, yay! Glad it was helpful. :)
Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I'm currently trying to work out which heavy-weight interfacing I need for some fabric cube baskets and there are SO many different types, just in heavy-weight...who knew! I know Bosal In-R Form is AMAZING, but it's so expensive here - I bought just 0.5 metres of it over a year ago and it was about 12 quid!!! So, no doubt it's even more expensive now. And I have got at least five or six 30cm fabric baskets to make, so I just can't afford it - otherwise it would definitely be my first choice. So, after watching your vid, think my plan is: * a layer of heavy-weight interfacing on both the outer fabric and the lining. And I might use heavier-weight fabric too, instead of quilting cotton or poplin. * then a layer of wadding in between outer fabric and lining. * finally, some basic quilting to hopefully give them a bit of ooompph! Please let me know if you have ever made a basket like this, as I would be interested to know if it works, before I attempt it! Thank you for your video, it was just what I was looking for 😻
Sarah - so glad the video was helpful! I've never made one like you're describing, but our local bagmaker says she doubles up on standard interfacing (I'm assuming she means medium), and she quilts them, and her bags stand up nicely. I would worry a tad about the sewability of two layers of heavyweight, but you could sew a swatch and see how it goes. Good luck with your project! :)
Thank you! I’ve used header foam in the past and it’s so difficult to work worth. I like the Bosal in this video, I’ll try that my next project
Yeah, the Bosal wasn't too hard to work with. I've never used Header Foam. I love these baskets though. I use them for crafts, kind of like project bags, but for dolls. I make a lot of things with stuffing and they're unwieldy to try to keep in flat bags. :)
This video is so helpful. Thanks so much!! One question… for a two color twisted cord, is it a full skein of dmc floss for each color? Is it possible to do three color cords? Thanks in advance
Thanks! Yes, it's a full skein of each color. I've seen people do them with 3 cords, but haven't tried it. I think the theory is the same - you just have an extra cord to twist before you twist them all together. :)
How did you cut the Canson board to get such perfect circles? I used scissors, and they are very round. Any suggestions?
Hi Mary - I used kitchen scissors for these - they're Cutco and can cut almost anything. However, after I filmed this I ended up ordering a circle cutting tool on Amazon that has been a dream. The name of it is: NT Cutter Aluminum Die-Cast Body Heavy-Duty Circle Cutter, 1-3/16 Inches 10-1/4 Inches Diameter, 1 Cutter (C-3000GP)

Can you please tell me the best way to transfer a photo to a canvas for needlepoint? I don’t know what kind of canvas to use or how to transfer a traced photo on tracing paper to the canvas. I am lost. Please help.
Great explanation- thank you. How about standup figures in needlepoint?
I did a stand up needlepoint figure and the most helpful thing was searching in RUclips for Stand Up Cross Stitch finishing. The matboard on the bottom is really important and the video I watched really broke it down so mine came out great. It was a few years ago so I don't remember the exact one I watched. It was a lady and it was something like 50 minutes long.
Great info, thank you so much! Saves me buying products and testing for my self!
Oh, I'm so glad! Thanks for watching. :)
Thank you, Jenya!!
What a great tutorial!
Great instructions!
How are you liking that glue gun? Been thinking about buying it? I love the stand on it!
I love it. It doesn't always stand perfectly, but if you keep the extension cord nearby so there's no pulling it usually stays up well. :)
Really difficult to hear but overall a good video
OMG. I'm so sorry. I can hear it well on my setup, but maybe I need to put the mic closer to me. I hope it was still helpful. :)

This is brilliant- thank you for posting. I can’t fight out, however, how to attach a hook to the drill. How did you do that part?
Hi Terril - so just get your drill key, or whatever you use to open the nose of the drill so you can change it out to another bit. And then when it's open, instead of putting in another bit you're putting in the threaded part of the cup hook (the part that you would be screwing into the wall if you were doing that). If you take it to your local hardware store they can prob help you. :)
@@jenyarose4411 Will try that. Thanks again.
Thank you! You made it much easier than other methods I've tried.
Yay! So glad. :)
Thank you! One of the best I've seen and so informative without too much needless chatter. Yay!
LOL! Thanks, Pat. The needless chatter is the worst! I said if I ever made a RUclips video I would get right to the point. Thanks for your sweet words. :)

Very Helpful - I have been paying $55-60 for finishing on ornaments about this size! ❤️
Right?! It can really add up if you stitch a lot of ornaments. So glad it helped you. :)
what is the name of Elenor's book that you mentioned and where is it on Etsy?
Hi Donna - here is a link to the PDF digital book on Etsy. If you want the printed book they carry it at Twisted Stitches in Albuquerque. www.etsy.com/listing/743441111/the-needlepoint-ornament-finishing-book
Your two videos & Eleanor Macnish’s book have really helped me learn to finish my ornaments! I wish I could post a photo! Thank you very much for taking the time to make these. And the initial mistake on making the knot on the trim was actually very helpful! 😊
Cindy, I'm so glad!! It was such a mystery to me before I found that book! I'd love to follow you on Instagram and see some pics! Let me know if you're on there. It's a great platform for needlepointers! I'm @jenyaroseneedlepoint on Instagram. Otherwise, I'm so happy you completed your projects. The amount of money we're saving by not having these professionally finished is astounding. I just talked to someone that was paying $100 per ornament for finishing. I'm sure it's beautiful work, but that adds up fast! I'd rather spend my money on gorgeous threads and canvases.
This was the best video on how to finish a needlepoint ornament! Thank you for sharing it.

Do you have a video on finishing a square sign?
Oh, I don't but it's really easy. You just nip the corners and fold. Maybe I'll make a video on the next square one that I do. :)
Would you please add a link or more info/details of the Canson mat board? (Have ordered the book!) many thanks!
