He Is Risen What day of infamy is this When evil men would take so good a man, Who should be free And hang him, that’s right, hang him Upon a wooden tree. They took him in the dead of night And plagued him all night through, By scourging and lashing, He bore this for me and for you. There was no crown of gold upon his regal head, But spite and malice wound they, in a crown of thorns, instead. What agony and pain he suffered , oh so silently; No pardon did he ask and no mercy, no, not he. He whimpered not, but bore his lot and cried out not aloud, And bore his cross right to the end amidst that jeering crowd. He had no hatred in his heart, but love and pity, too, And said he, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”. What gross injustice do you say? But wait, it was foretold to be this way. The Son of God, for man, would die, And in a cold sepulcher lie, And good men, everywhere, would cry in anguish, pain and bitter grief; But the victory of death was brief, For, in His glory Christ arose Upon the third day, as He chose But look,, some women to His tomb draw near And then draw back in awe and fear. An angel to those few doth say “He is not here. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” What joy unbounded did they feel, to know their Savior was so real. What joyous news to have to spread, for Christ had risen, as He said. And so you see, His Word He gave To come back from that cheerless grave. Thus suffered He for man’s salvation Compared to this, how small our task To spread the Word to every nation. Joan L Philbin
