ASMR Woodturning: A simple sycamore tree ornament.
These ornaments are one of my year round staples, which make great used of any offcuts from cutting bowl blanks.
This tree is turned from air dried English Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) from a starting blank of approx. 4¼" long x 2" square. Sycamore is a joy to turn and generally gives a great finish off of the chisels, needing minimal sanding.

ASMR Woodturning: Whipping up an Ash cereal bowl from air dried timber.
Просмотров 2 тыс.5 месяцев назад
This ash cereal bowl is turned from a tree that grew ~4 miles from my workshop on a local nature reserve. It was cut down during ash dieback management in 2019, planked at my local sawmill and stacked in my garden to dry. Finished dimensions and 4½" diameter x 2½" thickness. As with the majority of my bowls this has a grapeseed oil finish and is intended for food use. Please be aware that woodt...
Real time turning: a footed black walnut bowl.

This black walnut grew in Tunbridge Wells but came to me from a sawmill in Swallowfield, Berkshire. It came out of stick in September 2023 and this is one of the first bowls I've turned from it. I've recently been inspired by a few woodturners on social media and have decided to try adding a foot to a few designs in consequence. Real time learning: Can I achieve an acceptable sandpaper-free finish on some air dried hornbeam?

The aim with this bowl was to achieve an acceptable sandpaper-free finish, as this is a product which is not currently recyclable and I would like to reduce my consumption of it. The challenge is finding places to put the camera that don't get on my way when I'm working. There were 2-3 times in this video where I had to take a different cut to what I would have preferred, to avoid hitting the tripod with my tool or my body.

    • @JimDillon
      @JimDillon 8 месяцев назад

      @@woodworkscoracles6540 I have turned some bowls myself, and for some of your cuts I was thinking "He must be leaning way off balance to let the camera see this!" Which just amplified what I think of your skill - - it takes a great touch to still get long continuous cuts while standing off balance! My hat is off.

      @woodworkscoracles6540 8 месяцев назад

      @@JimDillonI appreciate your concern but I didn't have to make much of an allowance for the camera with my turning technique. None of the shaping cuts would have been done dramatically differently had the camera been turned off. It was mainly whilst I was turning the mortice that my tripod got in the way. However it seems that my technique is quite different to many turners, which may be why you felt I was contorting myself for the camera.

      When you see the smoke coming off of the wood, and the black line appears in the place where the pencil mark was made, that is what the wire is doing. It heats up from friction against the wood, and burns an indelible ring into the timber.

Where did you get your wide roughing gouge from? I'm assuming it's what, an 1.5"?? 2. Was that a simple grape seed oil you used for a finish like you've used in your videos? Thanks for the video!!! Hi, thanks for your feedback :) My hefty roughing gouge is a Robert Sorby 1 1/4", the deep flute means I can often use the sides as an impromptu skew. On these pieces I usually use Chestnut friction polish, but having recently been given some Odie's oil to try out I am also using this occasionally. The grapeseed oil isn't intended to be a long-lasting finish, do I use something a bit more durable on the pulls. Happy turning!

If you'd ever seen a real plug it would quickly become plain that sharp corners are NOT compatible and would at least cause a great deal of discomfort, if not serious injury! On the other hand, maybe it would be better if more people did use unsuitable shapes like these and I'm sure the news would soon get out that it was a shortcut to exterme misery?

      You will need a woodturning lathe with a capacity large enough for that diameter you wish to turn. The heavier the machine the better to absorb vibration, or have it on a leg stabd that is bolted to the floor. With thousands of brands in the world I can't recommend a particular machine, but the more you spend the better it will be. I prefer having variable speed and a rotating headstock, although this machine (which I had about 8 years ago) did the job perfectly well.
