The holographic board game scene in Star Wars inspired so many computer game authors to think "we need to do something like that", and they went in different directions. This was just chess with animated attacks, but there was also Free Fall/EA's Archon, which took place on a chess-like board but had combat done as an arcade-like action game, with pieces having different attacks. And then there were the games like Heroes of Might and Magic that were more like an animated miniatures wargame.

That's a terrific conversion of the origional sprites to monocrome, looks very classy.

My only question now is what do each of the combat animations for every piece look like
