First Dunmurry Harvest Thanksgiving 2023
It's interesting, and maybe quite telling, that Edmund Hamilton Sears preached the equality of women and men. And he was firmly anti-slavery - according to Wikipedia, on Sunday, June 16, 1856, Sears delivered a sermon entitled "Discourse" - the sermon was such a strong argument against slavery that it was published by Massachusetts abolitionists. I've always loved the carol for its positive, hopeful message, and now love it even more thanks to Rev Dr Steers.
Thanks for that information Nuala. Edmund Hamilton Sears deserves to be remembered more today, his thoughts and writings are equally worthy of attention in our day and age.
Thank you for a wonderful service. My favourite carol has always been It Came upon a Midnight Clear and it was lovely to discover the origins and story of the carol, and to realise that in 1849, people then, like us now, were hoping and praying for peace!
That's right, I think it is a wonderful carol
The illustrations certainly demonstrate that the denomination has "..... not been afraid to stand up for Freedom, Reason and Tolerance for 300 years" !
Happy Christmas 🎄.
Happy Christmas, everyone.
Happy Christmas and Happy New Year
It's fascinating from an Australian perspective to hear about a liberal form of Presbyterianism
Fascinating lecture on a little known book and the history of sacrifice and service in World War One. In May 1915, 17,000 men of the 36th Ulster Division took part in a march past of Belfast City Hall before leaving for Seaford on the Sussex Downs and thence to France. Barely a year later on 1st July 1916 a third of their number (5,500) were killed, wounded and missing on the Somme. They would serve with gallantry in following battles until the Armistice in November 1918. Lest We Forget.
Thanks for your comment Jeffrey. As you say it so important to remember these things. Rev John Ellis (a name I had not come across before) appears to have served with the 36th Ulster Division for three years of the First World War, with the YMCA. He was already in his 50s when he went out to the Front.
The photograph at 8.22 is invaluable. Rev Bill had a major role in Cork in the 1950s.
Best wishes for a special day tomorrow, 22 September. Rev Bill helped out the Cork Congregation in the 1950's.
Very informative.
Glad you liked it
Thanks for this video and remembering John Johns. I've spent some time in the archives at Liverpool Central Library reading his passionate DMS annual reports and other contemporary reports of people who sought out 'Mr Johns' as someone who would help anyone in need, so far as he could. His work with all faiths amongst Liverpool's poor marks him out as someone to be remembered and I hope to pop into the church to see his memorial stone at some point.
A wonderful tribute to a remarkable man.
A lovely video of a remarkable man. Hope this is the first of many Sue!
Thank you Elaine. He was a wonderful man, it is good to be able to record something of his life
Just reading the Herbert McClachlan biography of Gordon. Fascinating to see these artifacts of his life
Yes it is an excellent biography, it gives a full picture of his life
Beautiful church and grounds; beautiful musianship. Thank you.
Happy Easter.
One of our Cork members has moved there is settling into this fine congregation.
That's great
Brilliant 👍
Thank you
Very enjoyable.
Seems to have been a great morning's entertainment. Wish I had been there. JN.
It was excellent

I enjoyed all of the history lessons, good work 👌
I thoroughly enjoyed that, thank you, now for part two.

Absolutely fascinating
Words are not enough to thank for this video. I am a descendent of the Irish porter’s. Specifically from the younger brother of William and John Scot. Francis Porter in South Africa, Cape Town. I appreciate your video as it sheds light on their greatest work and service to the world. I am inspired to follow in their footsteps. Thank you again for this video. It is priceless for me . Faizel Porter. Cape Town . South Africa.
Great to hear that and very pleased to hear from a descendant
Very well played, great tree 🌲 too.
Congratulations to Rev’d Dr Steers and his team for producing this very informative series on the Bible. Both interesting and well laid out! Thankfully for those of us living in the West, we are still living in a time of Amity and tolerance! Rather than the days of Wycliffe or Tyndale! Amazingly one of the Henrican Reforms, that still stands,is the insistence, that the Parishes of England and Wales, must provide a Lector to read the scriptures,at a moments notice! The Open Bible chained to parish lecterns is a reminder of this! One the great luminaries on the King James Bible is Melvyn Bragg, his book “The Book of Books”, (The radical impact of the King James Bible 1611-2011),is worth chasing up!
Many thanks for your comments, some interesting points there
Thank you.
Thank you.
She was universally respected for her service. A very fitting service.
Great service, beautiful. Well done all!
Thanks Jim
A nice ceremony.
My Mum was part of our local NSPCI, in Newtownards. Her Minister was the Revd Townley Tilson. He was very close to all members of his Congregation. In the early 50s, my Mum as a child was hospitalised with Rheumatic Fever, and was very ill....The Revd Tilson wrote letters every 2 days whilst she was in hospital, and she kept them, every one. Sadly, the Minister passed away in the late 50s. But even now, in her 80s, she speaks very fondly of the communication, and enjoys re-reading the actual letters, which, in 2022, she still holds very, very dear...
A powerful and impressive statement which deserves our attention and following.
Thanks for concluding the very interesting series, David!
Thanks Andy
A great Christmas tree too. The church looks warm and inviting.
Great trumpet and a beautiful message
I am absolutely enjoying these videos. So, thank you so much for sharing them. I love the music, the sermons, and the churches. I've never heard of non-subscribing Presbyterians before, but I definitely find an affinity with what I'm learning. My only suggestion would be for a full tour of some of the churches. These little churches are just so homely and inviting, I'd love to be able to see them. Thank you!
Thanks for the suggestion. A future project might be to have a journey round each of the churches in turn.
We don't really have facilities for that - I hope you can find something suitable
Nice reference to Tom Banham. Greatly missed.
A very nice service and a pleasure to listen to, thank you.
Lovely service David and thank you to Allen too!
Romans 14:5, NIV: "One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind."
Another thoughtful and well prepped post, thanks for the share!
A thoughtful well presented service, every thanks for the share!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
Happy 300, Ballee
Well done, everyone. This was marvellous. Very uplifting
Amazing change in harvest machinery and methods over these 50 years.
Thanks for another enjoyable and thoughtful service - I'm glad that we will be able to continue enjoying them in September!
Such a beautiful setting. Norman is looking as if retirement is suiting him.
