If you're looking for chill, but passionately researched videos covering games both new and old, this might be the place for you. I like to think that I have a unique perspective on games, as I'm someone who grew up through many generations of video games starting with the NES, while simultaneously being mostly away from the gaming scene due to mostly playing multiplayer games exclusively for nearly a decade. With Humblemud, I'm rewarding my inner child by playing classic games I've never played before and going on exciting adventures in new games, all while chronicling my gaming journey along the way. I'll also be giving my thoughts on the industry, the psychology behind games, and discussing my 'in-between gaming' thoughts -- those moments when you're out in the real world thinking about gaming. Which for me, is all the time. So... expect a lot of material from me. I generally upload every week -- if not, every other week.

WHY (i think) WIND is GREEN in JRPGs and ANIME
Ever since I was a kid, I've noticed several instances in anime where wind magic or wind users are colored green. It started with a certain JRPG and continued on as I watched more anime and played more games. It's been bugging me lately as I've seen it more and more, so I decided to investigate. The results of this investigation may blow you away!

EXOPHOBIA REVIEW - Hybrid Metroidvania / Boomer Shooter!

My experience with Exophobia was unlike any other that I've had with a game, for better and for worse. The game has been in development off and on for 9 years by a small team, and the fact it's finally out is a triumph in and of itself. Combining boomer shooter, metroidvania, and puzzle elements, it's Zarc Attack's most ambitious title yet. How does it stack up? All footage shown is from either...

Is There a "Correct" Way to Play Video Games?
GREEN IS NOT A PRIMARY COLOR!!! 😭 Green is a SECONDARY color 😭😭😭
@@nokocchi1983 I meant in terms of computer graphics, but I understand that's not the common definition people use. Green is an "additive primary color" when we're talking about computer graphics, which you can see even today. That's where my head was at since I was thinking about video games when I recorded it. Sorry, I know red/blue/yellow is generally what most people recognize as primary colors.
I’ve watched two fairly comprehensive retrospectives on FF 13 this year, that have given me some food for thought on how the sum of its parts stack up. If you take the time to understand the weird naming conventions. It is very unfortunate that something went terribly wrong with the localization along with a ton of unfinished ideas, that flowed into both of the sequels, which for some made the first game even more confusing to wrap their head around.
I remember reading the instruction booklets on the bus of my pokemon games that my mum bought me when I was little Damn, why did I open it and have a good childhood??? I could be rich right now 😂
I never realized this before but looking back it seems so obvious wind is green 🤯
I always went for green to represent earth ie nature and also earth is my favorite element and green is my favorite color, but i mean i guess in a scientific way green can represent air due to oxygen produce by plants but that's all i got
Aye Smite name drop
Honestly I played that game for probably 6 years 😅 I don't play it anymore but I put a LOT of time into it
@@humblemudgames I had to take a break bc a divorce but I played a bunch as well🫠. Used to host a podcast about it and was one of the first Olympians. I love to hear people bringing up smite ❤️
@@fro_double_g I'm so sorry about your divorce. I'm sure it couldn't have been easy. Yeah my friend group who I played that game with often split up, but truth be told I was slowly playing it less and less. We were a group of 4 but usually only 3 of us were online at any given moment, so we were basically joust kings. I know joust is considered more casual but we were REALLY good at joust since it's what we mostly played, haha. I might do a video on Smite day. I have a video on Paragon that I enjoyed making, but that's about the closest thing I have right now.
“Some people might have been disappointed by the graphics.” Lol I didn’t even care about graphics as a kid.
RE: Disgaea I think it chose green as the element so it occupied one of each primary colour, red, green, and blue. The game has also always listed them in that order(fire, wind, ice, the classes for mages always go red mage, green mage, blue mage, etc). Green being associated with wind may be a thing they copied, but I don't think the colour was picked because of the element(especially when the elements are arbitrary and other than the triangle where mages are all weak against the element before them in the cycle the choice of weaknesses etc are all randomised). It's my opinion that the choice of colours came from their previous games, most notably La Pucelle Tactics where the elements are just colours that combine like colpurs of light(red crossing green makes yellow, red plus blue makes purple, blue plus green makes teal, and all 3 combined makes white), there it was about making cycles to combine the colours to make purification effects, but it also acted like elements(with enemies being weak if hit while standing on a particular colour). It kind of makes sense that they took the same basic elemental idea into their next game(but just gave them actual elements).
Golden Sun is a pretty bad example because, while Ivan may wear a green cloak, wind magic in that game is clearly and consistently purple.
Many have pointed that out, I should have elaborated more. I was trying to keep the video lean, especially in that section. Stats have shown most people didn't even watch half of this video, for example. But here are some green wind examples from the GS series. Ivan has his big green cloak, as I said. Atalanta, wind summon, is green and rains down green wind arrows. Ivan's daughter Karisa has green hair. Cyclone is used to move leaves, and has the green leaf motif. Zol, an alloy related to the wind in GS Dark Dawn, is green. I also wrote in the introduction of the concept that wind users often 'are clothed green or have green wind', with my thinking that Ivan belonged to that first category. If you don't want to count it, I totally understand! But yeah, I still have plenty of other examples too so it's all good 😁 Thanks for watching!
@@humblemudgames Zol is a good point that I forgot about because I kinda blocked Dark Dawn out of my memory. Same thing with Karis; I was thinking Ivan's cloak was a fluke because Sheba wears purple, but yeah I forgot about Karis. And Atalanta's an interesting case because the menu icon for the summon is purple, but then in the actual animation the arrows are in fact green. This might actually make your point stronger, that even in a series where they committed very hard to color coding wind as purple, they *still* couldn't keep from making some of the wind stuff green!
I didn’t really like the sound in gen 3 it was all tinny & compressed
WHO IS DISAGREEING WITH YOU??? WIND IS GREEN AND WILL ALWAYS BE GREEN
Wind is green because leaf is green and leaf float on wind
Man I gotta agree, having a secret base in emerald might be considered a “useless” mechanics nowadays, but damn that is so awesome, I wish all games pokemon games moving forward would have that
You bring up Satanic panic in the video. Funny enough, if you were to look at the reviews for the first 7 movies plus Detective Pikachu on Dove’s website they are all Dove approved even though Digimon, Yu-GiOh!, and Harry Potter are not. Dove is a strict Christian flavored movie review website.
reminds me of lufia
There's also Chrono Cross, where color-coded elements are a decently important plot point and wind is green. Plus Persona/SMT.
you and @oofley8346 suggested the same thing 15 minutes apart. Great inclusions!
I think my first thought was chrono cross, where the element of green represents wind as well as plant magic, followed closely by smt (technically "force," but same difference since nocturne)
you and @loganrenfrow2544 suggested the same thing, 15 minutes apart. Great inclusions!
8:10 finally explaining the important part. Fujin 4 life
Lol thank you for sticking through it with me. I just wanted to make sure I took the time to set the scene so people who hadn't ever thought about it realized how often it shows up!! I love Quest 64 as well btw. Thanks for watching!!
I came for green wind, stayed for Quest 64.
Pokemon really did alot with a very limited console. (I remember Gameboy before colour released)
This was a fun watch, what a great deep dive! I think you're into something with Fujin 風神 but it is amazing how well green works as wind! From basic colours and yellow being better for earth to the leaves blowing around, heck even razor leaf from original Pokemon does this despite grass being its own type!
Woo Brawl!
Favorite one is crystal hands down
I'm curious why Fujin is green. When he was created they had to have chosen green for a reason
Some have suggested that it could have come from the influence of other cultures, like the five Chinese elements. I think also that the green skies created from nasty storms may have perpetuated it, as well as routinely seeing wind move through the leaves of trees or leaves/grass being carried by large gusts of wind. I might make a follow up video putting all of these theories, and others that were suggested, together one day.
IVE SEEN THIS SHIT TOO! Thanks for bringing light to it <3
I think there's also the association of color in the Chinese 5 elements. The Chinese ones are fire(red), earth(yellow), wood(green), water(black), and metal(white). The Japanese version of the same thing (i believe they both originate from east asian buddhism) is Fire, Earth, Wind, Water, and Void. Void replaces metal, and wind replaces wood. I don't know how much impact that has on Japanese culture, but it might explain the connection between wind, the color green, and plants in general.
Never thought of it until now, but I can see why Rock Lee's outfit is all green
Interesting that in Ocarina of Time, the Forest Temple/Medallion were originally meant to be Wind - themed, hence both the windmill-spiral icon on it as well as their room in Ganon's Castle being a wind puzzle. So another indirect green connection!
It's not a JRPG or anime, but Lego Bionicles also represents the element of Wind with green! The Toa of Air, Lewa and all of his people are a very healthy leaf-like green color.
How is drowning blue?
it's a joke, my guy
explanation starts around 6:20
thank you! I was wondering if he was ever gonna get on with it
I was wondering.. has it also to do with the feng-shui? Because iirc the four basic elements get also represented in them!
many have brought that up and it's definitely a big possibility. maybe I'll explore that in a future follow-up video
@@humblemudgames it would also make sense in some cases due to chinese and japanese mythology overlapping. Rayquaza you named is also based on a chinese serpent dragon iirc, same as Shenlong or Zenlon from Dragon Ball. There are more cases like this but you get the drift (also tied to china beign associated with the colour green and yellow. I think green was for health and yellow for wealth? I mean I'm not 100%ly chronologically accurate on that since chinese history is complicated messy but them inventing the first laws and have a law justice system with police and such? Could be a hint to it).
Yes thank you.
THANK YOU! I always thought of wind as green and earth as yellow. Some games flip this and it really annoys me. Fire = Red Water = Blue Wind = Green Earth = Yellow or Brown Ice = Light Blue Holy = White (sometimes Yellow) Darkness = Black (sometimes Purple) Lightning = Yellow/Light Blue/Purple Psychic = Purple or Pink
No Persona or SMT references = bad research 😂
lol I did say I know there are many other examples 🤷
When a tornado is a' brewing, the sky turns green. Probably where it comes from
yeah, I hint at that with the green tornadoes that show in the video! they mostly come from storm clouds though, the tie in with tornadoes is a misconception!
Even though I'm a Green lantern fan I'm also starting to realize with the color green is representative in the mortal Kombat series like Johnny Cage shang tsung and jade a real perfect example like she's literally named after a green coloured Crystal
#Emeraldpower
Well Known Japanese Fire Character: Wizard from Warhammer Vermintide
I just put her up as an obvious color coded example, lol EDIT: also I just rewatched that part. I say "in a lot of Japanese media, and media in general..." I was like, I SWEAR I clarified that lol
I absolutely loved the prince of Persia(2008?). I am still eating for the sequel. Also, DMC is IMHO the best devil may cry, or if not the best, shares the top with dmc3. I thought I was going to hate it because of how awful Dante looked, but everything else is far superior that other DMC titles. Also, FF XIII and XV are not that bad. XV could've become a classic if not for the rushed last act. Also, everyone says they love X but ultimately is very similar to XIII. IMHO XIII battle system is far more enjoyable and strategic than X. Narratively, it relies too much into reading the very long and boring lore, but ultimately the story is in the same level. My shit game is beyond the beyond. A decent jrpg from PS1. Definitely not a masterpiece, but nowhere as bad as the worst PS1 jrpg as some people say.
Thanks for checking this video out, it's cool to see someone else who appreciates these games! I'll look into Beyond the Beyond
@@humblemudgames it is an ok game. I don't recommend playing it these days. If you want a game with a bad reception that is actually awesome, go for spell force 3 and it's dlc. It's basically warcraft 4 while being its own beast. Absolutely adore those games.
FF8 Fujin uses wind magic.
You have Ivan from Golden Sun front and center, but wind's purple in those games.
Many have pointed that out, I should have elaborated more. I was trying to keep the video lean, especially in that section. But here are some green wind examples from the GS series. If I had to choose a couple games to play the rest of my life trapped on an island, dark legacy would for sure be on the list.
I thought I was the only one who thought about elements and their colors back then. I hope you delve into more topics in similar vein like purple vs. yellow lightning. EDIT: And maybe darkness having different shrouds of color, sometimes it's depicted as pitch black, sometimes it's red and black, and sometimes it's black and purplish.
The magic was gone in gen III for sure. Pokemania died. Gen 4 was actually an improvement in popularity. GenIII was a blunder in many ways. Couldn't even catch them all anymore at RS release.
"horrible at cultivating a multi gendered audience?" yep, man and boys have diferent natures from woman and girls, is a fact.
Fuu from magic Knight rayearth is green coded.
Wind spells in persona are green. The wind attribute icon on yugioh cards is also green.
I show off that wind attribute icon from yu gi oh several times in the video!! :)
@humblemudgames ah. My bad. I was listening to your video while driving and not watching
Oh I wasn't criticizing, just sharing that in case you missed it! Drive safe out there.
U a real one for playing one of the og goats and my favs, legend of dragoon
LoD is a classic of all ages!!
I think there's arguments to be made about its association with "nature" and nature based magics being represented by green as well, and wind being a natural force. (and nature is left out of a lot of elemental systems so wind represented as green to signify nature makes sense). Also the term "green energy" and it's correlation to wind turbines being a significant method for sustainable energy helps solidify the association. (all in addition to what you pointed out in the video!)
Thanks so much! I actually ALMOST put the green energy/renewable energy concept into this video but I thought it was a little too new compared to the other concepts discussed. You're absolutely right on the element of nature. I'm thinking about doing a follow up video based on everything people have shared here in a month or so, so keep an eye out for that.
