Backpacking + Running the Grand Canyon, Day 1: Leaving the Rim
Просмотров 80Месяц назад
We recently spent 3 days backpacking from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. For anybody who has not been, it was an amazing trip, and definitely worth the visit, especially for adventure seekers looking to explore inside the canyon. This video covers the first day of the trip where we experienced extremely high temps (107 degrees), got to check out more of the canyon (cause you've always gotta...

    Perfect trail and running conditions! You guys would wearing the NakedRunningBand, instead of hand carry. My daughter and I use them year round on training runs, and they easily hold enough for annual RimToRiver and RimToRim runs at the Grand Canyon. So nice to be hands free, AND not have a vest or pack on the back and shoulders!

      @@MTE_DFLEW My daughter and I switched to them in 2019. Miracle of miracles for trail running (IMO). We do a 21oz Camelbak Softflask in the back panel, phone, key, etc. in the right front panel, GU Roctane, peeled tangerines, etc. in the left front panel. You can see me/us running with them loaded lightly, and packed full, in the run vids on my channel, if you want to see how they function under those conditions.

    I love running in the Canyon. Started running R2R's (as CC runs; no walking, no poles) with my daughter on her 16th bday in 2015, mid-Aug. We did it 5yrs in a row together, and then I started doing a 2nd one each Oct, and running them solo. She joined me for another one in 2022. I'm currently training for my 13th one, and was just there over Memorial Day weekend, to do a speed run of the Rim2River route and posted that vid to the channel. Best times of the year to run in the Canyon are, late Apr-end of May, and mid-Aug through late Oct. Depending on when you go, and what the weather conditions are currently like, you can do some quick math, and decide if you want to leave in the dark, and blast along with a headlamp on for an hour, or if you want to drop in at sunrise, run the whole thing in daylight. Both methods are a blast. A little tip for the descents while running; don't carry any water, in order to save the weight, and the hand-carry, or the bouncing if in a waist pack like a NakedRunningBand (what we use) or a race pack. When I go down the S. Kaibab, I carry no water, and hit the spigot at Boat Beach, just after the Black Bridge. When I go down the N. Kaibab, I carry no water, take a drink and wet hair at Manzanita Rest, and then stop for spigot at Cottonwood CG, about 1.5mi later.

      Thanks for the great input! I'm hoping to do a R2R within the next few weeks. Im thinking I'll probably start with a headlamp. Smart with the no water on the way down! I really appreciate the advice!

      @@MTE_DFLEW Before you set plans in stone, take a look at the traditional weather patterns in July, and what's brewing over the next 3 weeks. Generally the high temps in June and July create their monsoon season, which in turn, creates some very hazardous weather conditions to include heavy rain, massive thunder and lightening on both rims, that is actually deadly, flash floods on some sections of the trails, flash floods that damage highway to the North Rim out in the Marble Canyon area, and wild fires. The reason my daughter and I run there in mid-Aug, is that the monsoon season has just ended, there's rain but it blows through quickly, and generally the temps are cooler due to cloud cover the seems to move in at about 10 or 11am. The reason I go again on the first Sat. of Oct. is that the weather is perfect, and I can wait until sunrise, not run with, or carry a headlamp, and can turn the whole thing into a fast cross-country run. I/we go super light on the runs there: NakeRunningBand, Petzl Tikkina, 6-8 GU Roctanes, 10-12 peeled tangerines, 1 5hr energy drink bottle (half at Phantom, half at Havasupai Garden) and 5-6 packets of Liquid I.V.(with a tiny hole poked at the top of each packet so that they can be compressed down and folded over themselves in order to be really small), a 21oz and a 17oz Camelbak soft flask. The 17oz is a backup for extra water, incase we show up and there are water stops that have the water turned off, or if needed due to heat, on the haul from Cottonwood through the box to Phantom, and from Phantom up the CorkScrew to Havasupai.

    Dangerous hike in winter. Having survival gear is essential, especially if the weather turns. Bail put options as well need to be understood, and always get the latest forecast in the morning before you start. Not doing that killed Kate Matrosova in 2015

    • @MTE_DFLEW
      @MTE_DFLEW 7 месяцев назад

      We full heartedly agree. during the traverse we each had extra insulating and shell layers we never needed to put on, as well as several bail out routes. The extra gear was a bit cumbersome for pack weight but a necessity for anyone attempting to do this hike during the winter months.

    Bravo to your determined spirit and success. Thanks for sharing your challenging detailed hike. Very helpful. Mount Hamilton is a mountain in the Diablo Range in Santa Clara County, California. The mountain's peak, at 4,265 feet. But, you probably know that. Wishing you peace and good fortune. Happy Trails!
