@@hydroAJK Are they new turbines? I've read that the newer turbines are designed to allow fish to pass through (mostly) unharmed, but fish can't handle the pressure differential in older turbine designs (hence the screens).

Fish-friendly designs: Runner designs, such as rounded leading edges, reduce fish injury. However, after the shutdown and during periodic inspection, no fish were found inside the spiral case or tailrace tunnel.

Also allows the designer to use a single way ram, which is stronger and smaller than a two way ram. Mostly a fail safe design feature.
