George Duke - Cravo E Canela (Clove & Cinnamon) - bass cover
A seasonal offering of sorts in the title of this beautiful Brazilian classic, originally composed by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges.
This version by George Duke from the Brazilian Love Affair album was my first introduction to the song. It remains the definitive one for me, much as I love Milton's version. Jamil Joanes was the bassist on the original recording and he absolutely killed it!
Thanks for watching.
The bass: Fender Jazz, 1977

The Crusaders - The Hustler - bass cover
Просмотров 442Месяц назад
A nice little pocket groove that I love playing on gigs. Featuring the late great Wilton Felder on saxophone AND bass! He was always one of my favourite sax players but I didn't realise until relatively recently what a wonderful bassist he was too. This is a great example of his understated and perfectly in-the-pocket style. Thanks for watching Please like and subscribe if you enjoy my videos. ...
South African Township (Mbaqanga) bass cover - picking style! ep. #17 Makgona Tsohle Band
Просмотров 3223 месяца назад
A bit of a classic that has become a standard of the genre. The Makgona Tsohle Band was the backing band for Mahlathini and Mahotella Queens and featured the legendary Marks Mankwane on guitar and, on this recording, West Nkosi on alto saxophone. 1960s South Africa found the Zulu and Sotho beginning to incorporate the influences of African American R&B, jazz, and blues into their traditional, i...
James Brown - I Got You (I Feel Good) Alternate Version - bass cover

I recently came across this version and thought it was so cool - and so damn funky! Not sure who the original bass player was. If you know please comment. N.B. This song in in the key of E but there is a low Eb note in the intro and bridge. I tuned the bass down a semitone or half a step to accommodate this so that the song is played in the F position. Thanks for watching Blessings to all The B...

My breakdown of this great bassline which consists of a single phrase repeated over 3 and a half bars or measures. There are a few variations but here I focus on the basic line and just one of the variations. Thank you to all who requested this tutorial. I hope you find it helpful and welcome any feedback and comments. Watch my original cover video here: ruclips.net/video/45M56JVgpLs/видео.html...
The Real Thing - You To Me Are Everything (bass cover)

This is a song that I have been performing for many years but I never thought of doing a video of it until it was requested by someone on my channel - thank you again @ConsiderThis1-2 Having played it in my own way for all this time, I thought it would be interesting to study it afresh and do a proper note-for-note transcription. After isolating the bass track using moises.ai, two things struck...

By special request, here's one from L.T.D. - a band that I'm embarrassed to say I had not come across before! But always nice to discover new 'old music' so to speak, and I'm loving these guys. What great pocket, great songs and killer basslines. Thank you @ConsiderThis1-2 for the introduction. Wonderful version of Miriam Makeba's international hit from the late great Manu Dibango of Cameroon who sadly left us in March 2020. Donnie Hathaway LIVE - What's Goin' on (bass cover - Willie Weeks)
Просмотров 1 тыс.10 месяцев назад
When I first heard this version of the Marvin Gaye classic around 15 years ago, I immediately fell in love with the bass playing. I later discovered that it was the great Willie Weeks who I hadn't come across until then. Clearly he had some very big shoes to fill after James Jamerson's original version, but I think he succeeds masterfully. To me it feels like Jamerson but with more swing. What ...
South African Township (Mbaqanga) bass cover - picking style! ep. #16 Mahlathini & Mahotella Queens
Просмотров 51910 месяцев назад
Another gem from the Mahotella Queens featuring the late great Simon "Mahlathini" Nkabinde. Mahlathini was the premier exponent of the 'groaning style' of singing that came to symbolise mabaqanga music. 1960s South Africa found the Zulu and Sotho beginning to incorporate the influences of African American R&B, jazz, and blues into their traditional, indigenous music. New styles such as township...
Herbie Hancock & Head Hunters [LIVE IN JAPAN] - Butterfly (PAUL JACKSON BASS COVER)

Although Herbie Hancock's album 'Flood' was recorded in 1975, it was not released outside of Japan until 2014! I had however heard the album well before then, and I was absolutely captivated and blown away by these fantastic live versions of tunes I already knew well. This has long been one of my all time favourite pieces by Herbie Hancock and this was an epic performance by Paul Jackson. Also ...

Since uploading my bass cover of this song in July 2020 I have had numerous requests for TABs charts, tutorials etc. As I don't read music or TABs I decided a tutorial was going to be the way to go. So three and a half years and 30k views later, here it is! It's a long one but I have covered the whole song which essentially consists of 5 sections. I will call them A (main groove), B (ostinato),...
REGGAE BASS: Studio One Rockers | Lennie Hibbert - Village Soul (bass cover)
Просмотров 357Год назад
A delightful little number from the classic compilation album 'Studio One Rockers' which featured various artists from the Studio One roster. Recorded in 1969 by Jamaican vibraphone virtuoso Lennie Hibbert, this is perhaps a very early version of reggae, although it seems to be a fusion of many styles. You can hear the the percussion is playing the Nyabinghi rhythm which is a traditional rhythm...

Mr Strains, got a question. In your opinion which bass guitar is best for mbaqanga playing fender, ibanez ,yamaha e.t.c, if you were just to pick one and why?
Ok, Actual Proof now !
Ah yes !!! I adore George Duke and this album, Brazilian love affair ! You know how to chose your covers and you play this one with great talent and feeling, "as usual" !
Thank you bro 🙏
Great cover👍💥💯Amazing playing, tasty sound👍
Thank you Eugene 🙏
Wow, amazing!
Hello Marcel, Brilliant and groovy playing as always ! May I request a bass cover ? if so, can you please do a cover for Yeke Yeke of sir Mory Kante ? Here is probably the only cover of it found on the internet but unfortunately it's very short. ruclips.net/video/Sfi1WKIW7-4/видео.html Thanks and greetings from Morocco.
Hi there and thanks for your suggestion. It will require a re-imagining of the bassline as there's not much going on in the original. I'll see what I can do.
@@MarcelStranis Indeed, the point is about re-imagining a bass line that can fit this masterpiece. Looking forward to listen to your creation ! Thanks and long live the bass :)
@Sssamawi 😎
1:12 It is the Phrygian ♮3 scale also called Mixolydian b9 b13. It is the 5th mode of the Minor harmonic scale 😉
very nice play Marcel. After watching your vidéo, I decided to transcribe the part. You may find it in Musescore 😉

Beautiful! Great playing! 😁

There's nothing exciting than enjoying what you do. You bring all of us Joy. Stay blessed.

Smooth, man. I really like it!
Great playing! I recently purchased a Am pro2 Pbass and fascinated by it's tone . . .
Thanks. And nice choice of bass! 💪
Cool!
Great sound, great vibe
Great cover and tone as usual. I don't think Felder is so understated on bass, he was the guy on I want you back for example. BTW you should check his bassline, and his solo between 6 50 and 7 50 here.... Yum ! ruclips.net/video/ivlB1Soww-g/видео.html
Interesting point. I must admit that I'm not (yet) very familiar with the full breadth of Wilton's bass work, and I never realised that that was him on I Want You Back. That is definitely not understated, allbeit that it is a 'written' bass part that forms one of the main melodies of the tune. I guess I meant understated in a relative sense compared to the flashyness of say Jaco or Marcus. I think of them as sort of lead bassists compared to Wilton's pocket playing. But listening to that great Jimmy Smith clip (thanks for that) reminded me of my first introduction to Wilton's bass playing - Donald Byrd's 1971 album Ethiopian Knights. There, like here, he is very much at the centre driving the groove and not scared to be high in the mix either. Thanks for the education and I'm looking forward to uncovering (and perhaps covering) more of Wilton's bass work.
@@MarcelStranis oh yes please, more Wilton ! Although I am far from having viewed all your videos, you are one my favorite youtube bass players. I don't have your talent, but I record bass covers too, for example this one I published tonight, maybe will you enjoy it. ruclips.net/video/nbOydf2eyoE/видео.html
@mustybill9886 That is a very cool bass cover sir! Great tone and nicely in the pocket. Beautiful P bass too! And thanks so much for the kind words. Your support is much appreciated. All the best to you.
Respect to Marcel

Great groove
What a song...in my face!

Brutal Mix. Trumpets are so in my face in the middle! Great playing like always.
Thanks Obra. Yes the horns are definitely 'up there' 😆
Great line to cover in its simplicity and such beautiful sound of your P bass.
Thank you!

Hello dear Marcel!! Where can I find you on Social media?? 🙏🙏
Hi Abdallah, this is it! 😅 I'm not on TikTok or Instagram. I am on Facebook but I don't really use it much. If and when I decide to go on those other platforms I will link them on youtube. Thanks for your interest 🙏

With that giant mark bass amp or whatever it is, i bet that sound in the room is killer. Great cover all around
Thanks
Good sound
Hi Marcel, I remember meeting you around 2010 when you were playing with Williams at The Clouds in Dalston with Hamish on keys. I jammed with you too. I remember our crazy rendition of Giant Steps. You visited me a couple of times at mine in Tottenham. Funny how you popped up in my feed randomly today with this great cover of Herbie. Keep up with your great bass work. Your fellow bass player from Poland, Jacek
Hey Jacek, thanks for your message and kind words. Yes I remember us meeting often back in those days. Great to hear from you! How are you? Are you back in Poland now?
@@MarcelStranis I'm ok and yes back in Poland for a few years now. Life is good here.
