Starved Rock Western Canyons
I had visited Starved Rock earlier in the year, but got there late and didn't get to see much. I returned with plenty of time and got to visit the canyons the park is famed for. The park is beautiful, but there are a lot of trails closed. It is unclear if this is temporary or permanent, though they do look like long term closures.
I was able to record all of the canyons and a good part of the return before the battery died on my phone.
I hope you enjoy this video.

Allerton Park: Green Trail
Просмотров 3521 час назад
I wandered out to Allerton Park again. It is close enough to be mostly convenient and the park offers a variety of trails. I really enjoyed this trail. This trail is on higher ground than the Brown Trail I hiked, and I think that is the difference. Parts of the Brown Trail are located on a flood plain, and I don't find that terrain as enjoyable.
Timber Point Trail: Moraine View State Park
Просмотров 1614 дней назад
I went to Moraine View State Park in LeRoy, Illinois. This trail ended up being much shorter than I expected. When looking at it, I found I was looking at a trail in Maine that was about a mile longer than this one. Still, despite the short, 0.4 mile, this loop around the point was very enjoyable. It was quiet and peaceful and I would definitely do this again if I were in the area.
Allerton Park: Brown Trail

I returned to Allerton Park and hiked the Brown Trail. This took me through the woods past the statue of The Death of the Last Centaur, to the large open area where the statue of The Sun Singer is placed. Then it took me down to the Sangamon River before returning to the statue of The Death of the Last Centaur before returning to the parking lot. All in all, aside from a very short area at the ...

While I was in Hawaii, one of my coworkers that lived there took me and the other traveler working there to a place called Lulumahu Falls. This is a pretty short video because I really didn't record much. Most of what I did record was someone being airlifted out of the area we were hiking to.
Buck Schroth Trail

I visited Allerton Park in Monticello, Illinois. There are a number of trails there. I decided to hike the Buck Schroth Interpretive Trail. The trail is about 1.9 miles long and wanders through woods and along the edge of a restored prairie. This was the first trail I hiked at Allerton, but it wasn't the last. It is my favorite trail in the park. I tried something new in this video. I read from...
Walnut Point State Park: Woodpecker Nature Trail

While driving out of the park after hiking the Whispering Pines and Observatory Trails, I passed a parking lot with a trailhead for the Woodpecker Nature Trail. For as disappointed as I was with the Whispering Pines Trail, this trail thrilled me. N...

It took some time to make it happen, and just before I was able to make the trip, I learned that the building had been razed. Still, I decided to make the trip and visit the area. I returned to Friends Creek Conservation Area where I hiked the Sun Trail. I thought I was going to be disappointed by this trail, but I was pleasantly surprised. Good morning!!! French canyon looks really cool. It's nice how they have the board walk for a trail. Wild cat canyon looks awesome also. Lots of nice canyons at that park. That would be a really cool place to explore. Thank you for the share. Have a wonderful day!!!😊

Thank you! The trail was a mix of boardwalk, soil and a short section of concrete. French Canyon is pretty cool, but since it is the closest to the parking lot, it is very busy and as you could hear, it echoed a lot. Wildcat Canyon was also pretty neat. I liked LaSalle Canyon and wish the trail hadn't be closed so you could walk both sides.

What trail was you on after Clingmons dome. Was that just an extra route you took for fun? I thought the trail to Charlie’s Bungion was off the same parking lot as Clingmons dome - Via Appalachian.

    • @chrislist7456
      @chrislist7456 Месяц назад

With the exception of the hike from the parking lot to Clingmans Dome, the whole trail was the Appalachian Trail. We picked up the AT at Clingmans Dome and hiked it to Charlies Bunion, then retraced our steps to the Newfound Gap parking lot where Ben had left his car. You are correct that you can get to Charlies Bunion from Clingmans Dome. The Newfound Gap parking lot is about 8 miles from Clingmans Dome, with about another 4 miles to go to get to Charlies Bunion.

@UnknownSpirit222, Awesome! I loved the hike. It was supposed to rain off and on that day, but we didn't see a single rain drop. The first part out of Clingmans Dome is a lot of downhill, with some uphill sections, though I only remember one big climb. The climb out of Newfound Gap is long and slowed me down quite a bit. I made a lot better time heading back from Charlies Bunion. If you record your hike, I'd love to see it.

I was thinking about this while hiking this section of trail. I mostly agree. I think a better route would be to follow the trail north out of Dexter and pick up the Waterloo Pinckney-Trail and follow that. I think, though, that what they're trying to do is connect communities with this section of the trail. If they did used the Waterloo-Pinckney trail, they'd bypass Chelsea and Stockbridge. I'm guessing the major investment in the foot/bike path between them plays a part in the routing. There may also be some jurisdictional issues. If there is an organization responsible for the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail, they may not want to cede/share authority with the people running the Iron Belle Trail. I don't know how it works north of Homer once it meets up with the NCT.
