The Bielsa Method - Wing-Back Playmaker || Tactical Analysis - Part 2
Bielsa's methodology is admired around the soccer community all over the globe. One aspect is his use of what he has available. At Leeds, there a few individuals that have became pivotal pieces in a well-oiled cog.
Luke Ayling, most commonly a RWB, has become one of, if not, the most important piece. His passing ability, finsihing ability and diverse positioning have caused mayhem across the EFL Championship this season.
This is my interpretation of the tactical uses of playing a wing-back in this way, any thoughts would love to hear them!

thank you so much for this video. i have always loved the uswnt defence and there defensive midfielders. this was amazing to watch. also, shout out to tobin heath. she is good at dribbling but people dont talk enough about how intelligent and smart she is in her play.
Crazy to think what Bielsa could have achieved if he had technical players and clinical finishers. The amount of chances they created without a goal is mind blowing

whats better having 433-LW.ST.RW or 442-ST.ST?
Depends on personnel. If you trust you FB and CB and have mid fielders that are capable both offensively and defensively (1 playing CDM and 1 playing CAM in Diamond formation) 442 with the left and right mid fielders ideally acting as pacey wings to either free up the strikers or to cross into the box for the strikers. You play 433 if you aren’t as confident in your back line, particularly your fullbacks have to move up in parallel with the left and Right mid fielders when they go the the attacking level in the 442 to become wings in order to keep the Diamond formation either with the two center mid fielders or with the center backs and the CDM depending on how aggressively you are pushing the offense so you have people back in case of a counter.

Marcelo Bielsa was not the first manager in South America to use this system in fact Croatia's Mirko Jozic 's Colo Colo 1991 used it in their Copa Libertadores winning season. Marcelo Bielsa met with Mirko while he was the managing Colo Colo on multiple occasions and has used it in most of his teams since.
