Rare Dawn 2 1/4” vice. Did I completely ruin it?
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Год назад
I bought this hard to find 2 1/4” Dawn vice from a friend and once restoration started I found a crack in the sliding jaw. My first attempt at repairing it was a disaster that made it worse but I think I got a good result in the end. The sad part for me was my friend felt he had ripped me off which was not the case at all. Neither of us knew the crack was there and now it’s sorted. Thanks Georg...
Free Tools! The craziest garage sale ever?
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.Год назад
I went to a garage sale where everything was free. The owner had inherited a house from his uncle and wanted everything out of the sheds so he could knock them down as part of clearing the area so he could rent it out. I got a massive haul of tools all for free. I’ve only shown about half to two thirds of what I picked up to try and save time. I also got reamers, drill bits, jars of blind rivet...

Lathe Chuck Removal that took 20 years. Hafco, Warco, Grizzly.
Просмотров 10 тыс.2 года назад
I’ve owned this lathe for 20 years and I have tried every method I could find to get the 3 jaw screw-on chuck to undo so I could fit my 4 jaw or face plate. I finally came up with an idea I thought might work so I put it to the test. These lathes were made under many brands back in the 80’s Hafco in Australia, Warco in the UK and Grizzly in the US. Compressor Overhaul. 48 year old Compak compressor including 300 psi tank test. Will it explode?

I picked up this clapped out compressor cheap just for the pump but everything ended up being repairable so I kept the whole unit to increase the volume of air to my sandblaster. I did a hydrostatic test to 300 psi to check the integrity of the tank. Now I run two compressors for my sandblaster and the results are very good. The chuck was trying all along to save the lathe bed from your hamfisted chuck removal technique of screwing it off, and unceremoniously letting it fall directly onto the ways. Good grief.
@@memyself3275 I had a thick black leather welding gauntlet folded in two covering the ways. Just because it isn’t shown doesn’t mean there was nothing there. Please enlighten me, if that was hamfisted how would you have done it?
@@scroungasworkshop4663 Heald it with my hands? I remove the 60lbs chuck on the lathe at work frequently, and if I did this I would be fired for abusing company equipment. Bad for the chuck, bad for the machine and it leaves "Apprentice marks" to put it kindly.
Hi, I'm a bit late to the party, but nice work- I have a few Dawns/Joplins/Carters I've spruced up, and a few US/UK small Table vices that have wandered in lately as well. Did you ever find out the maker for the 'T' vice ?

Hi Stuart, Paul from Quorn, SA here. I was so relieved to find this video that you have taken the time to produce. I recently purchased a second hand lathe the same as yours under the OSAKA branding. It came with a never used 4 jaw chuck and blank backing plate. I drilled the main shaft & through a thick walled pipe. I put a high tensile 8mm bolt & with Still-sons and shifter spanner on a jaw of the chuck I went to start applying pressure and before I knew it started undoing. ( unlike your stubborn bstrd) Thanks mate 👍
@@WallabyTracks Hi Paul, thanks so much for your positive comments, it’s nice to know that it helped someone. What a prick mine was but I’m glad to know yours was a little easier. Cheers, Stuart.

Your second lucky 'mistake'. All the grease and gunk greatly slowed the damage to the piece in the tank. I always strip paint and grease in one go by simmering the vice in a big tub of caustic soda and give it all a good blast from a pressure washer ... only after that do I go on to electrolysis. Turned out a treat Mate, job well done. btw you are not the only one to connect up wrong ;<)
@@bigoldgrizzly Thanks, luckily it’s the only time I have gotten it wrong 😂😂

When I was a kid, I badly wanted one of those chopper push bikes with the sissy bar and the three speed shifter. My parents bought me a rusty second hand regular bike with a fixed wheel. All I could do was stare in envy at the bikes that the rich, cool kids owned. Boo hoo!
@@Preso58 Same here Mark, and to top it off my dad did up a bike for me but it was a girls bike he found at the dump. @@barryhunt5357 Hi Barry, great to hear from you again. Cheers mate, Stu.
Thanks for bringing us along with you! I really like those utes you have down there! The angle cleaned up really nicely!
@@357magdad Thanks Magdad, unfortunately no decent point things but I’m very happy with what I got. Re the utes, now the big US ute’s/ suv’s/ pickups are coming to Australia in increasing numbers we are spoilt for choice as long as you have the coin to pay for it. All the US trucks are converted to right hand drive locally in Melbourne. Toyota is currently testing the Tundra here. If it goes ahead Toyota will import them from the US and get the same Melbourne company to do the RHD conversion, The big difference is that if it goes ahead you will get full Toyota warranty and servicing at the local dealer which doesn’t happen with the other big three. I saw a new Tundra the other day as Toyota have a couple of hundred on the road all over the country for testing by bigger fleet buyers. I’ve got my name down for a test drive if it all goes ahead. Cheers, Stu.
Interesting walk around Stewart. Some of those prices were a bit ridiculous. Typical dealers ;) You got good value. The little float is nice. Cheers Rob
@@Xynudu Thanks Rob, agreed and so I stay away from the dealers but they have their place. Sometimes they’re the only one with what you want so you just have to pay up. Me, I’m not looking for anything in particular so I really like the folks just having a clean out, that’s where I tend to get the bargains. That Starrett level is $70-100 all day long anywhere else. Cheers my friend, Stu.

Hi Stu….another great video mate 👍. I knew you’d score that square the moment you picked it up haha. Come up nice too mate, great job. Enjoyed looking at the old cars as well. Love anything to do with the General. Don’t mind the classic Fords either…..have certainly mellowed with age on that front ha! Mate, great vid once more, and thanks for providing it. Always love your work 👍, Cheers Ian
@@iand5057 Hi Ian and thanks for your kind words. You know me well and I couldn’t get the $5 out of my pocket fast enough. Things like that square really grab me. I have always been a Holden fan and my first car was a HK wagon followed by a HK GTS Monaro. I have a 2005 VZ Monaro sitting in my garage right now but like you, I have mellowed over the years and have a lot more appreciation of the Fords now too. I’ve even owned a few over the last 15-20 years. Cheers my friend, Stu.
What a range of stuff for sale there. Seems that our flea markets here in the states have devolved into people selling new cheap import stuff. The ones selling anything of interest think it's made of solid gold by the prices they want. Nice grab on the level and square. Most would look right by them.
That was a cool swap meet. If i ever get across the pond i have to go one. I go to them here in the United States all the time and they are fun
@@ivanstiles7030 Hi Ivan and thanks for taking the time to comment. I watch a lot of the swap meets in the US via Scout Crafter and 357 Magdad’s channels and from what I see you blokes are way ahead in terms of quality, quantity and reasonable prices. It suddenly occurred to me recently that one of the reasons for this is the design of American homes. Over there it seems standard to have a basement and an attic which means things can be put away and forgotten about for years or even decades whereas here in Australia our homes are generally single storey without an attic or basement. That means that normally it’s the garage or backyard shed that gets the junk stored in it and an old shed is not the best place to store items long term as over time things get eaten by rodents and insects and they’re generally not damp proof. Cheers mate, Stu.
@@scroungasworkshop4663 yes sir. My home is 3 levels with a garage, shed and a small pole barn. Lots of room to hide new tools from my wife 🤣 I've been to Perth and Melbourne when i was in the Navy and those mini trucks over there have always intrigued me especially the older ones. I also like the old right hand drive Australian cars with American names on them, very cool. I recently bought a new American Ford Maverick mini truck with a turbo charged 4 cylinder and i often watch videos from Australia to try to get ideas for mine. You fellas know what you're doing when you build your small outlanding trucks over there.
@@ivanstiles7030 Hi again Ivan, we got a lot of American names on our cars because Detroit had more influence on our Australian car designs than most Australians are willing to admit. While Australian designs were different to those of the US, if you look closely, most of the time you can see the basic US heritage under the skin. Cheers👍
